Question:  What's this "Route Package Protection" 0.98 cent charge on the Marine Patches website that can't be deleted/removed?  If that's a mandatory charge for every order, it kinda makes me not want to purchase anything more from them.

Unfortunately I can't answer your question. It is however added to every order. All of the USN and USMC units that order their squadron swag from the site have it added as well.

I have a couple of preorders with FLD. Will this sale cause any trouble for me?

No, all pre-orders placed with me before the transfer will still be fulfilled.

    Hi Dave,

I have just noted the following as I tried to place an order:

    • The sheets have different prices quoted from your website to USMC Insignia's. The difference is between $12-15 per sheet.
    • They don't seem to ship everywhere, they wouldn't accept my order, as I am located in New Zealand.

To clarify, the price differences are NOT between $12 to $15 per sheet. All 8.5 x 5.5 inch sheets were priced at $15 (some were $12) and all 8.5 x 11 inch sheets were priced at $20 (some were $15), so the difference is between $3 and $5 per sheet.

Not sure why you couldn't place an order. I'll let Jack know so he can look into it.

Did they copywrite Jarhead? How about Crayon eater?

They're not copyrighted, they trademarked. Interestingly enough, Jarhead is not on the list of trademarked words and terms.

Soooo can I still buy and afford the decals for my F-35 I am asking myself?

For what it's worth, all of the DoD service branches have the same Trademark and License requirements, and have had them since 2004. Technically, every small aftermarket decal business, as well as kit manufactures with decals covering USMC, USAF, USN, USA, USCG markings are trademark 'infringers', unless they hold a trademark license with the respective service branch.

I also want to clarify and reiterate the fact that the Marine Corps did not come after me. I had a license in 2019, it expired and I forgot to renew it. Found the paperwork a little over a week ago and reached out to the T&L office to renew. No longer qualify and was labeled an infringer for the years I sold decals without the license. Selling the business to USMC Insignia LLC was the solution. However, now we're running into more issues with them that we hope to resolve soon.

I'm not understanding what on that sheet is subject to trademark laws. I do not see any USMC logos on that sheet at all, or did I just miss it? Have they trademarked the word "MARINES"?

My logo with the modified Eagle, Globe and Anchor, the title MARINES, the term Flying Leathernecks used in my name, the squadron designators (VMFA(AW)-533, etc.) and squadron logos. The Trademark and Licensing office is being extremely difficult. On the bright side, a current MAG Commanding Officer sent me a message this morning asking if there was anything he could do to help. Short answer is probably not, but it's good to know there is a full bird Colonel that believes this is all bulls--t.

What really bothers me is this is a small snippet of an email that was sent from the Trademark and Licensing office to the owner of USMC Insignia a couple days ago :

"Flying Leathernecks (FL) used to be a hobbyist licensee, that license ended.--------------Reference the time Allyn spends sending us infringers, they are bad for USMC Licensees and bad for the USMC Brand.  That said, FL makes products that are good for the USMC Brand and serve the USMC community.   I’d like it if D Roof were (again) a licensee, but after reviewing the licensing standards he doesn’t believe he qualifies."

It's not that I don't believe I'd qualify, I know I don't qualify. They raised the minimum requirements and as a sole proprietor, I literally cannot meet them. Their new license standards are set up for large companies with CEO's, CFO's, production facilities, etc. I currently do too much for a new hobbyist license and I'm not big enough for a business license. However, if they acknowledge that my decals are good for the USMC brand and serve the Marine Corps community, why can't they work with me to get me licensed again!?

  7. As of 1130 today, Flying Leathernecks Decals is now owned by USMC Insignia LLC and are officially licensed products.

All of our decal sheets will be uploaded to their site over the next 24 hours, with the first one being here :

First, allow me to say I have no experience with 3D stuff....yet. I am curious is it prone to shrinking like traditional resin? Just curious if the odds are good that 3D items will actually fit properly? For example, will the Reskit A-7 exhaust actually fit? I would hate to cut up a kit only to find out the new resin is undersized due to shrinkage.

    Mark Proulx

Shrinkage issues with 3D printed parts is pretty much non-existent as the resin used simply does not have the same properties as traditional resin or needs the use of RTV, which also had shrinkage problems. One major benefit to ensuring parts fit correctly is how they are designed. Obviously, the old way was to create a master by hand, then cast it in resin. If there were shrinkage problems, an almost entirely new master would need to be made. With 3D printed parts, one part can be printed and if there are problems, simple adjustments to the CAD model are made, then another part printed. Once a CAD part fits correctly, multiples can be created without worrying about their fit.

Per the Amazon link, that 3M/TapeCase material, like Oramask 810, is also sensitive to heat:

Like Out2gtcha,  I've stored and used small rolls of Oramask 810 inside my house (normal heating and cooling) for many years without a problem.

Do you honestly believe any modeler is going to be dealing with temperatures in the 200's? To be clear, I also have several rolls of 810 here in the house that is perfectly fine. However, once it is cut (like a mask set), over time those cut pieces shrink.

  10. I had to toss several hundred dollars worth of pre-cut masks after we returned from San Marcos. As we left our stock in my truck the day prior to and the day after the show, as well as during the actual trip, the heat literally destroyed all of it. I had/have been using 810 for a couple years, had sold a few hundred sets, and during that time, only received 5 or 6 complaints about sets not fitting correctly, so I chocked it up to being bad cuts. Didn't realize that it was due to the material shrinking after it's cut. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that not only does 810 have a shrinkage problem over time, it is exacerbated by heat.

While I've found a great alternative, it's more expensive and only comes in 12 x 12 inch sheets. I've been trying to find large sheets or rolls of the masking material used by the larger companies, but have been unsuccessful so far.

  11. If I move forward, this will most definitely be a pre-order item. If it is successful (for me personally, recovering the print cost is a successful sheet), I have a maintenance data sheet almost done that would also go to print as FL18002.

I'd also consider FL18003 with two different options if both of these sheets are successful.

Both would retail for $20 each

    What say you?

  12. Our second AH-1Z sheet will be sent to Microscale at the end of September. We are currently waiting for reference photos on the Czech Republic AH-1Z, which should arrive early next month. Sheet is 8.5 x 11 inches.

AH-1Z BuNo 169498, the tri-color scheme, is covered as it appeared with three different squadrons. HMLA-269, who originally painted it, HMLA-169 and HMLA-267. The latter being the current operators. Changes in the markings, camouflage pattern and airframe will be noted for each time period it was flown by each squadron.
