Generally, it had a different DB engine.  The 205 had a DB 605 instead of the DB 601 in the 202.  Visually, the underside of the nose is different with its twin barrel oil coolers instead of the single shallow rectangular oil cooler on the 202.  Also, they were fitted with 20 mm wing cannon.

Just to add a little more to this, the C.205 was basically an up-engined C.202 and could be distinguished primarily by the two barrel like oil coolers under the nose and a prop with broader blades and a more rounded spinner.  They were built in 2 series.  Series I machines were armed with 2 0.5inch machine guns firing through the prop and two 0.3inch wing mounted machine guns.  Series III machines were the same as Series I except for the puny wing guns being replaced with 20mm cannon.  Only 265 were built, but many C.202 were upgraded to C.205 standards.  All were built or converted to C.205V standards

C.205's had a longer service life, with some still being operational until 1952.  Forty eight were exported to Egypt in 1948.  There was going to be a much more heavily redesigned version, the C.205N and two prototypes were flown.  However, the Fiat G.55 was reckoned to be a better long term bet, so that is where the C.200/202/205 line ended.

Given the tiny numbers built the C.205 achieved quite a lot and it was highly regarded by those who fought against it and those who flew it, both Axis or Allied pilots.

Hope this helps,

Michael

All-

Italeri just posted this lovely box art and an advisement that their Mc.205 Veltro will be available starting in October. I haven't seen anything yet about marking options available in the kit.

Enjoy!

Looks good, and I'll be buying and building.  If it's anything like their C.202 kit, it will be highly buildable out of the box with plenty of marking options (there's eight in the C.202 kit) and good interior detail.  However, expect the silly mistakes to be carried forward, like the fuselage grooves and poor control surface detailing.

I'm hoping they'll offer the option to build both Series I and Series III, and perhaps with the option of an Egyptian plane, as well as planes flown by the Regia Aeronatica, Co-Belligerant AF, ANR and a post war Italian AF too.  With eight marking options, it should be doable.

Cheers,

Michael

Am I the only one who had fitting problems with the Mc202 kit? many gaps (almost 1mm) with the engine cowling. This kit seems t be built with open engine compartment only... if you close all engine panels, it doesn(t match at all).

That was my experience.  The fit of the engine panels when they were closed was horrible.  It is like the kit was designed to be built with the covers open. Still going to get the 205 though.

I'm working on this part of the kit right now, and have the cowling fitted reasonably well.  It didn't fit when I first tried it, but most of this was due to the addition of the oil catch can by Aircraft in Pixels that I've fitted.  The here issue is that the pipe from the oil breather at the top of the block fowls the right gun trough.  Once this had been ground back, the fit was much better.  I still had a bit of an issue, and found that the engine mounts, where they mount to the engine block, hit the cowling.  I've ground out a bit more around here and have the gap down to about 0.5mm.

So if you're building yours OOB, I'd daub some more paint on the engine mounts and push the cowling in place.  It's a case of test and adjust.  I haven't yet done an update on this, so pictures later.

One more possible issue.  The front of each gun barrel is the rear part of the gun troughs in the upper cowling piece.  I was very careful to check that these all align when I put the guns in, so my question is do your guns line up straight with the gun troughs?

Hope this helps,

Michael
