It’s sad that once again a thread has drifted off topic, and once again it’s drifted to WNW talk.

I trust it will be locked down shortly, nothing to fear.

Perhaps we need to have a discussion on a new forum, dedicated to all things WNW-related?

WNW was listed in the title of the thread shut down.
I guess OP could also put disclaimer: if you hate this subject don’t read on. It will be closed shortly in any case.

    How hard is it?
Recently there was a Kotare thread with no wishlisting allowed which worked so I guess it’s possible. Don’t get me wrong whenever I see people wanting the latest Fairey Fruitbat it irks, so understand any thread hijack or cognitive bias bans.

I just don't get it.  No one forces members to read or follow a post.   Why is it felt that it's such a horrible thing to have some thread drift.  Look at the count of views for those posts, obviously a (very) large number of people were following this thread and participating and yet the mods decided that this was unacceptable and locked it?   I think at minimum, the decision should have included feedback from the OP.   If the OP felt his thread was being hijacked, that's one thing.  If the mods just unilaterally decided that were going to lock it, that's something else.    Leave the nuclear option off the table and save it for threads that devolve into politics, personal shots, etc.   My $0.02.

  3. I totally agree with you.  I find the mod's heavy-handed approach to thread drift disappointing.   Giving the demographics on this site and the inevitable decline in the number of members, I would think any discussion that people are passionate about would be welcomed and encouraged instead of being locked down.   As long as the discussion remains civil, let it go wherever it goes.     I recall another site that that tried to regulate posting by locking threads and bouncing members, it's pretty much on life support these days, some forums haven't had a post in months.    SMH...

I think they are fine.  If you want, send me your address and I will mail a couple to you to check out.  Or I can photograph them better for you.

Appreciate the offer!    Think just a few closeups would be fine.  Did you use any setting solutions on them?

I had a set of "Ace of Spades" decals made for a tank I was working on for a veteran.

I sent them a blurry pdf of an unobtainable decal sheet in the wrong scale.  I can't remember how much is was but after trying to find them everywhere I was happy to pay.

I got a bit of silvering, but that was my fault.  They lay down on a gloss very well, but the tank was 3d printed and I could not get a suitable surface.

Very responsive and didn't take long to get them.

Any thoughts on the thickness of them and how they worked with setting solutions?  I’m just happy that I found someone.  Been hoping to do a very special F/A-18 Growler but the lack of a few decals was holding me back.

Beat me to it.  They are currently working on the wingtip pods as well and said they’ll also be doing all the other Growler-specific antennas.

That is a matter of opinion, and only one of the errors in the cockpit layout have been aired on this forum, If you knew more about Spitfires, you would know you are wrong in your expressed views, none the less you are entitled to them, just as everyone is entitled to a view! However eroors of fact are just that, errors of fact.

Sir - I agree with others about this thread not being the place to slag someone else’s kit.   That being said, I’m genuinely curious about what you feel Kotare missed.  I hope you will start a dedicated post to detail your concerns.

Edit - reading the rest of the posts, I see that the guy has been banned.   I’d still be interested (in another thread) to understand what the issues were.

I completely disagree about Kotare, think whatever you like about the Fit and engineering, but te Kotare Spitfire is really badly researched by comparision to an Eduard Spitfire - the Kotare is bad as far as the big forms go, and the Kotare cockpit is a complete muddle..... An Eduard 1/48 Spitfire MkI scaled up to 1/32 would be infinitely better than the Kotare effort.

I must have missed the memo.  When did the Kotare Spits go from “outstanding” to “garbage”?

Just checking in on this thread after a while to see if it has turned into a wish list yet :-)

LOL, it's always been nothing more than a wish list, just flavored with a bit of discussion regarding the business case for one's fav subject.    Long may this wish list prosper!

  10. Had a chance to acquire a Fisher conversion, sans decals, at a very reasonable price from a kind LSP'er.   Passed on it, just couldn't justify it with all the kits I had in the queue but still have regrets.    Really have a thing for a A-1E, something about a family model, single engine prop-driven combat aircraft that really ups the "cool factor".

    Maybe one day.

Dragon - thanks for posting that video, those pics are of amazing quality.   I'll watch the thing in full this weekend.

I don’t mean to come off as the grumpy old captain- but after 27 years and 20,000+ flying hours, I’m smoked when I get home after a 4 day trip. I’m also an instructor; so those training flights really feel like work with today’s crop of new hires.

Jumping on a sim at home? I’m good thank you very much.

Funny though - I only “fly” this sim once a week or so, usually only the 737 (although the Cirius Vision Jet is starting to attract my attention).   When flying the 737, I did start thinking that if I had to make multiple flights a day, every day, it would start to get pretty old, pretty fast.   My admiration and respect goes out to those who fly commercial jets for a living.

  12. Plugging away on some sub-assemblies.   First up are the engine inlet sand filters.   These were fairly common in Iraq due to the "moon dust" that was so prevalent.    Less so in Afghanistan and other areas.      These come in the kit, the filter elements themselves are pretty nice PE.     Got a bit of touchup to do and I'll tone down the start paintwork when I get to the weathering phase.

Here's the real thing.  The forward part of the sand filter has a door that can be opened once at altitude.   Since my UH-60L will be on the ground, I'm keeping the door closed.

A few more subassemblies.   The horizontal stab is from Werner's Wings.  The one in the kit is for later H-60 versions.

    Thanks for looking.

Cool. But as someone who does this for a living, this would be the LAST thing I’d want to do with my free time.

Next time, get up at 4 am, put on a suit and tie, drive around for 30 minutes, wolf down a breakfast burrito, walk around outside in the rain for ten minutes ,then jump in and flyB) waaay more realistic.

LOL, as someone who has zero interest in doing this for a living, I can assure you that it's a quite enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy Saturday AM.   It's funny, on the flight sim forums, there are more than a few RL commercial pilots (both US and European).   They are pretty hard-core simmers.    I asked one why he spent time replicating what he does in RL.   He said he truly enjoys the time spent simming, he can try different approaches, different weather conditions and "fly" other aircraft besides his assigned jet (737).  He acknowledged that MSFS is no replacement for the simulators he uses as work but the 737 in particular is high enough fidelity to allow him to practice failures, challenging approaches, etc.    He said he knows of plenty of other pilots who are simmers as well.  He said the split is 50:50 between older pilots who are counting down the days till retirement and look at commercial flying as nothing more than clocking in for a job they really don't enjoy and younger pilots who look forward to flying every day.   I guess that's the same in every profession.

As far as the crash at Fairchild AFB , that was purely pilot error flying the aircraft outside of it's flight envelope [he killed the aircraft along with the people who were with him]. They weren't designed to do knife edge passes which is basically what he was doing.

The Fairchild crash was heart breaking.   Everyone on the base knew Bud Holland was going to kill himself and his crew at some point, he had a long track record of flying up to and past the limits of the B-52 but upper management turned a blind eye.  On the day of the flight, the squadron commander was so concerned, he opted to pull another crewmember and fly instead.   It was supposed to be his final flight, his family was there to congratulate him after he landed and witnessed the crash.      Great case study here:

Won't be much of a stretch to get a Mike out of that sheet for the Gamecocks too John.  Might have a few of them on some show tables coming up...

Hey Zero, can’t remember if you are a local guy or not but if you’re interested in NAS SoWey, there are a couple of FB pages which have lots of awesome pics.   Worth checking out. I was thinking the same thing about doing a Mike since it sounded like someone was working on a new tool kit.

The Trumpeter kit is globally Ok. Various small stupid things to correct here and there (too short rudder, too thick vortex generators and items to remove on the nose) but not a big deal except the LG. However, there is a very nice Aires set correcting that. Add a resin seat or cockpit and you get a quite good replica. Obviously you can go further with things such as

improved pylons, more detailed exhaust, vortex generators, corrected windshield or better weapons.

Any idea how one could fix those vortex generators?   The thought of trying to sand them down to a more realistic thickness makes my head throb.

Wasn't someone else working on a large scale Scooter?
