Bob MDC Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 Hi, A couple of bits of info, not sure if it has been posted. Shapeways have gone, https://3dprint.com/311136/shapeways-executives-resign-as-3d-printing-service-files-for-bankruptcy/ And Hornby Hobbies have bought Warlord Games Bob scvrobeson, LSP_K2, BiggTim and 4 others 3 1 3
LSP_Kevin Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 Thanks, Bob. I learned about the Shapeways news yesterday, and meant to post it, but got caught up with other things. Kev BiggTim 1
LSP_Ray Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Wow! I just ordered a couple of items last week, and it was delivered two days ago. Guess I just got it under the wire. In a similar vein, when I was in charge of our companies profit sharing monies, I decided to sell our shares of some investment REIT. It wasn't something I bought, and seemed something hard to value and a little flaky to me, so I sold it. Not two weeks after it sold, I found out it went bankrupt. I congratulated my timing, until I get a letter in the mail telling me I had to return my money. BS, I thought, until it was pointed out to me if an entity goes bankrupt, any monies paid out within 60 days of the bankruptcy can be called back. So instead of getting our money, we got zero. So not great timing after all. thierry laurent, Kagemusha, BiggTim and 4 others 1 6
Maxim61 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 I'm not surprised by Shapeways. There prices were way over the top and it was just cheaper for people to buy their own 3D printer and print at home. You could say they priced themself out of the market. BiggTim, Rick Griewski, Lee White and 1 other 4
thierry laurent Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Prices were initially reasonable but progressively went up to reach stupid levels. I used to get various 1/32 and 1/35 sets from them years ago but rarely went there since the COVID for that specific reason. It clearly looks they killed themselves their business. Too bad! LSP_Mike Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 I have some of their Fokker DVII parts, and they were pricey back then. Too bad they went under, but... BiggTim 1
LSP_K2 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 I never ordered from them, the cost being the principal reason, but I'm still saddened to hear of their problems. I know it was a valuable service to many. BiggTim 1
Out2gtcha Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Indeed a bit surprising, but not shocking. One of the reasons I now own 2 resin printers and have a new K2+ FDM printer on the way, is the utterly ridiculous pricing of some of the printing companies. BiggTim and Maxim61 2
thierry laurent Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 The problem is that printing oneself is only replacing half of what Shapeways was offering! The platform covering dozens of thousands of topics created by other people and that you could order is also gone! The prices became outrageous but what about the cost of time to make oneself all the CAD files...? Rick Griewski, BiggTim and scvrobeson 3
Rick Griewski Posted July 7, 2024 Posted July 7, 2024 Hmmm. They had a large executive branch. BiggTim 1
Pup7309 Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 So what would happen if you put in an order now? Not much? BiggTim 1
LSP_Ray Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 I read on a different forum you couldn't place an order anymore, but I haven't tried it. BiggTim 1
Hans Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 That is bad news..I needed some parts for my Hobby Boss Tiger I from Shapeways. BiggTim 1
