Some quick phone pics of progress:

The Tamiya/Trumpeter intakes are about finished. I used an off-white and dirtied the lower inside of the intakes a little.

Aires exhausts... parts are dry-fitted and not correctly aligned, yet:

The forward fuselage is assembled... will require a lot of work to get to get it to look clean.

Phew, it's been December since I last updated this thread. Things have been a little upside-down on my end but I have been progressing with the Cat.

The basic fit of this kit can really be a challenge:

Nothing too difficult to handle, it just soaks up a lot of time. The underside is in generally good shape now:

Wings are on.

Getting them to fit well is a challenge, I don't like seeing wing/fuselage gaps where there aren't any on the real thing, so I've spent a bunch of time shimming and sealing.

Fixing this gap is the toughest challenge (same on the Trumpeter F-14, btw):

I carefully ran UHU two-component glue into the gap (after masking the surrounding areas), this is about as tight as I can get that gap to be. The next F-14 I build (which will again be the Tamiya kit) I'll need to figure out a different approach.

I should be able to glue the nose on in the next few days, can't wait!

Cheers,

Marcel

I'm not doing very well with keeping this WIP going... but I am making good progress on the Cat, it's a huge amount of work but I happen to have a lot of time on my hands right now.

Here's an overview of the underside:

I made good use of the various Archer raised details, in this case the latches:

Archer micro-welds used on the Tamiya external tanks:

Before masking them, I did the carbon fibre engine shrouds by mixing Vallejo metallic colors with Tamiya acrylics and working with a screen to get the textured look... then a thick coat of satin varnish to get a plastic-like look (ignore the white dust particles):

Here's what the top looks like now:

Getting ahead with the dark brown splinter. Note "washed off" leading edges.

Thanks!

I should have posted these images of the exhaust shroud. Hex bolts were drilled out and filled with tiny Aluminum tube sections... huge thanks to Kai W. for the tip.

That's alot of work but the result speaks for itself.

Very convincing :clap2:

Got the dark brown splinter shade on, for the most part:

Vertical stabs are just dry-fitted:

Note tight wing/glove seal on pic below... that took a lot of work. I think it's possible to build an excellent Tomcat with the Tamiya kit, but you'll have to invest a huge amount of time in basic model building to get you there.
