Juggernut
I don't think he's done one on the -1D yet. I may be wrong on that (Lord knows I'm wrong on SO many things according to my wife). Anthony, I was reading the -1 (which does not cover the -1D by name) structural repair manual last night and it states that the outer wing flap section was fabric covered, top and bottom. I also remember reading (someplace) that said when the rockets were added to the -1D, a metal skin was added to at least the underside so that the rocket exhaust wouldn't burn the otherwise fabric flap. Now whether that means the entire flap was skinned in metal has yet to be brought to light. The internal flap structure was metal and I haven't done enough research to say one way or the other that -1D outer wing flaps were all metal or just the bottom was skinned in metal. LSP_Ray
Should I "jump" and get this kit, the EXACT aircraft I would build! VMF-323 on Okinawa, 1945. As a proud former Death Rattler, these markings are a must (and pretty easy, btw)! Semper, Ski In Jefferson Dorroh's markings?

David Hansen
Even as I was typing that, I knew someone would post exactly what was posted. Yes, the -4 was used in WWII. How many squadrons flew them vs. the number that were in Korea? Vanishingly small. When did they arrive in the combat zone? Historical significance? I'll be elated - ecstatic even - if Tamiya does a -4. But I see no historical pattern for their investing in the amount of new tooling it would require to do it. I may be wrong, and you all may be right. But I'm certainly not putting any money on it. They did have some interesting "G-Symbols" that earlier F4U-1Ds did not have. Many were painted as such before the edict came to replace them with letters.
cbk57
This is a good discussion only marred slightly by whether Tamiya will issue a -4. I don't have a belief one way or the other. I do believe they could issue a -4. I believe that the -4 falls in the sphere of significant aircraft that are viable for 1/32 treatment by Tamiya. I don't think there is a sole focus on WWII for prop planes. My belief is that they are still relatively new to 1/32 and have reallly only been investing heavily in the last 10 years compared to a 40 year history of issueing aircraft models in other scales with a very small investment in 1/32 jets. With that said there are a lot of worthwhile 1/32 subjects that they have not touched yet. I limit worth while to meaning subjects that they can make a worthwhile profit. I think this is one that could realistically happen, that does not mean it will or that it will happen in a realistic time frame that most of us that want one would hope for. I just hope they issue something new in the next 12 months that is an all new airframe from what they have done so far. I like the -1D release and might buy one, but like many of you am always hoping for the next big thing. David66
David Hansen
Great discussion this! Does anyone know if the outboard flaps were metal skinned top and bottom? I am guessing they were. Also when did that secondary aerial lead in change to go on the port side (from stbd) behind cockpit and the mount disappear off the rudder top to the tip of the fin? Sorry to ask all these questions, but I have my Corsair book by Dana loaned out.....must get it back asap now! Cheers Anthony Anthony this is not based on sifting thru Bu Aer numbers, but more at just looking at lots of F4U-1D and FG-1D photos. From what i can tell, the move to the left hand side insulator seems to have come very late in the war, and i suspect that it was a Goodyear innovation. No photos exist of the last F4U-1D built before Vought F4U-4 production took over, so i don't know what the penultimate F4U-1D antenna configuration looked like. I think that at least at the beginning of F4U-4 production, Vought continued the practice of using the post on the rudder as an attachment point for the rubber tensioner but i think later in the run they adopted Goodyear's practice of attaching the antenna wire to the tip of the vertical fin. It is also possible the switch occurred slowly by salvaging FG-1D rudders without the post and then re-attaching the antenna wire to the F4U-4 fin tip....strictly speculation. A frustrating aspect of "Nailing this Down" is the inability to verify the BuAer numbers on the tails of Corsairs, since they were only what.... 1 inch tall? As the risk of using this as a cop out, i must use the worn out cliche.... "Construction began with the Cockpit...." Oops...wrong one.... "Consult photograph of the actual aircraft you intend to model". -d- Anthony in NZ and David66

Guest
I don't think there's been any word officially, but since this is just a version of an existing set of tooling, and they've clearly got decals, etc done, I'd say sooner rather than later. The sooner the better I'd say. Fingers crossed.
