DESERT STORM! Building the new Revell Hurricane kit

Happy New Year everybody.:beer4:

So sorry for the long hiatus but I got distracted by the rather obtrusive arrival on my work desk of the new Airfix superkit ….

Anyhow back to our Hurricane.

The wings are mated to the fuselage and the joints cleaned up. Thanks to the ingenious engineering, the dihedral and symmetry are fool-proof and rock hard.

The foot ‘stirrup’ is linked to the handhold (green). If the stirrup is in lower position, the handhold is opened.

The two small louvres (blue) are present on the tropical Hurricanes. They should be removed on other variants.

A small walkway (red) is added on both sides.

On the ground, the MG apertures on the wing were generally blanked off with tape to protect them from dust. Yet the resulting indents are apparent.

The two outboard MGs were frequently removed to save weight and the shell ejector slots blanked off.

That’s it, folks.

Next time we’ll deal with the camouflage.

Keep well and thank you for watching.

Cheers,

Quang

Thank you all for your comments.

Now to the paint shop. We’ll start with the underside which will be in Azure Blue / Light Mediterranean Blue or whatever it was called.

In absence of a really legitimate sample of the real paint, I’m relying on the interpretations of various aviation artists to base my colour mix in order to get a satisfactory result (to my eye, at least).

I begin by laying off a multi-coloured foundation of dark grey, red-brown and yellow-green.f

Paints are Gunze Mr. Color suitably diluted with hardware store lacquer thinner and applied in thin layers with a marbling  effect.

The next step is building up the underside colour. Starting with AK Realcolor Azure Blue lightened and greyed with RLM76, the paint is applied in successive thin layers making sure not to obstruct the coloured undercoating.

This is a slow process, taking time to build up the colour until it reaches the suitable hue and intensity.

My goal is a distinct, yet not so intense cobalt blue and not too light to let the cockade white pop.

Masks for the underside cockades are hand-cut in AK masking film using Olfa circle cutter.

The entire cockade is painted white.

The inner red disc is too small for the Olfa cutter. A photo-etched disc template is used instead. Red applied.

Still waiting for the patina and weathering which will be added after the upper camouflage is completed.

Thank you all your interest and your comments.

Until then,

Cheers,

I've already bought it and it's waiting to be built. That means your post is very useful for me. I'm watching!

You won’t be disappointed (… by the Revell kit. :P)

hi Quang, excellent job on prepping the bottom paint job, and lovely cockades!

may I ask you to kindly give me the size of the air cylinder in the landing gear bay? I'm working on custom decals waiting for my kit, which is still not showing!

TIA, Paolo.
