nmayhew
Just a few more bits today I used Anyz spark plug and end connector bits for the fuel connections in the fuselage added some light exhaust stains at the rear and added some panel line weathering by spraying MRP exhaust stains not overly happy as it has turned it a bit too dirty for the look I had in mind i think I will use oils for this next time, which have the advantage of being able to wipe it off and start over whereas airbrushed stuff requires a repaint etc etc but it’s snot completely crazy Spanish school so I think I will leave it and put it down to experience Also added the braces for the landing gear which I had originally removed i think these are a definite improvement and finally touched up a complete balls up of exploding superglue I had during construction of wing to fuselage (I’d like to blame the kit but this was completely me) dodgem37, dennismcc, Uncarina and 9 others

Oils are definitely my weapon of choice, completely transformed my weathering when I figured out how to use them. nmayhew
nmayhew
Been busy with work for the past couple of weeks but managed to get some oil weathering done today The colours I used: I like oils because even if you goof it up you can just hose it with white spirit and remove it, and start again Oils work best over a Matt or satin finish if you want to blend things (gloss finish if you want a pin wash) thought I would try using a tooth pick to dot the colour on then dry brush worked it into the surface ... looks a bit scary at this stage but a) have faith and b) remember you can always start over and then use some sans odour to blend And start blending Bit difficult to see results here because it’s just crappy iPhone shots (sorry) and also the surface is still wet This shot below I think was taken before some of the above but shows the wing root weathering - I tried not to go too crazy but also found that dust / Earth type weathering on NMF actually doesn’t show up too aggressively Anthony in NZ, John1, MikeC and 5 others
nmayhew
Then tried some burnt umber for the section of the flaps that show with flaps down in some pics I have seen quite a bit of weathering here Tooth pick method quite useful here looks cool here but it was way too much I will try to remember the effect for other projects as I do quite like it It ended up more like this - looks darker in pics than in real life not convinced but I think I will leave it Also dirtied up the belly - this is where oils are quite cool - this was super super easy and finally tried some oil stains mistake was to use burnt umber when I should have used a black or off black i will go back and add to this tomorrow Toothpicked the oil abs then masked to help with the brushwork I really like the effect but just used the wrong colour (oops) that’s it for now for anyone who hasn’t used oils, I can only say give them a whirl - they are quite good fun! Rockie Yarwood
Nick, I agree with Tom, the weathering looks great. I think the raw umber looks fine for oil staining, but there is nothing stopping you from adding a little variation to it - maybe look at using a burnt umber rather than black? John1
What a great build. You've sold me on trying oils on my next build. I really love the effect on those invasion stripes. How long does it take for the oil to fully dry? Just so I'm clear, there is no comparability issues with using these on enamel and acrylic paint? Yes I only noticed that sort of thing late in the build i don’t think I will go for it but it does look pretty cool
nmayhew
Did a tiny bit more grunge work on the underside I have to get this finished before the fuel tank goes on because access will be near impossible also got the bomb racks on - the fit is pretty decent fitting the bombs was problematic - the Eduard bombs do not match up with the grooves in the bomb rack. I had to do some last minute snipping to make the grooves a little bigger. Glued first with TET quick setting then a dab of CA i also added (before the bombs) a little light grey oil around the shell case ejection chutes - it doesn’t really look like I wanted it to but it does add a little interest that’s it for today Tomorrow be matt coat underside, then hopefully attach the fuel tank; this needs to be done before the landing gear bay inside doors are attached - again because of access issues. Also need to do some paint touch ups in the gear bay itself. Edited November 8, 2020 by nmayhew Lothar, John1, Kagemusha and 8 others
Alex
That weathering is really coming together nicely! I have this kit sitting on the shelf; now thinking about moving it up the queue having seen your excellent work. nmayhew
