My copy of the Cauchi book 'Malta Spitfire Vs' arrived yesterday - exactly what I was after - so thanks again for the heads-up on that Andrew!

I doubt we'll ever get to the exact colours used on those machines - but this book is certainly an excellent basis to work from.

As an aside - anyone remember the 44 Sqn Avro Vulcan that appeared at Red Flag with 'desert' paint colours on the undersides? I've seen debate over the 'exact' colours being Dark Earth and Mid stone'. Now, my friends father was Crew Chief on that aeroplane - apparently they decided to camouflage the underside after they'd arrived at Nellis. He told me the paint was sourced from a local DIY store in Nevada and mixed up 'by eye' so the underside could be painted overnight. Not the first, or last, time in aviation history that 'non-standard' paints/colours have been used.

Now - Spitfire Vc's...

LFD keeps mentioning that there are some "amazing" decals for Malta Spits coming out, apparently in conjunction with their release of this conversion.   Very much interested in seeing what's offered, hoping that they'll hit on some of the subjects profiled in the book above.

EDIT - looks like they may have arrived:

Hi John - interesting - any idea if these are more new sheets, or the two sets recently released by Fantasy Printshop/Euro Decals?

I'm working on reviews of the latter for LSP at the moment.

EDIT: Aha - our posts crossed in the post!  😆

If I remember correctly, LFD didn't specifically mention Malta Spits, but rather some "amazing" decals for Spit Vc's overall.

Time will tell!

Only issue with those decals that I see is that all the Vc’s they have for subjects have the 4x20mm weapons fit and I didn’t think LFD was including the extra cannons in their conversion set (and pretty sure they aren’t in the Tamiya IX kit either).

Edit - apparently LFD is including the extra cannons and the larger wing bulges as part of their kit.   Impressive.

Okay, time to let the cat outta the bag! @Eli Raphael and I at Zotz have designed a decal sheet specifically tailored for your Spitfire Vc project. We think you'll love the variety of schemes we have chosen!

Portada (4)

Reverso (1)

Hoja suelta (2)

Contraportada (1)

We hope you'll enjoy, and that it will encourage you to not only buy the decals, but the Vc conversion to go with them!

What a great selection! The hard part is deciding which one(s) to do...

Between the Laminar Flow conversion and what we assume will be the eventual Kotare release of a Vc, you'll have many opportunities to have several Vc's in your collection. Personally, we think you should build all of them!

Some nice subjects, well done!

Another Brennan subject is BR192, W-2. Brennan wrote that he flew this aircraft in combat on one occasion, equipped with four cannon and was so tired when he returned that he forgot to raise the flaps after landing. Makes for a Spitfire with a difference, and a legitimate subject for modelling the flaps deployed.
