Wow Craig! Thats some major surgery. You're a much braver man than I! At least you have a great kit as the starting basis for your "D".

    I'll be following along.
    Good Luck!

I'm a coward when it comes to sharing my stuff, I model mostly for the art ,accuracy plays 2nd place and I see too many trolls on the various forums who will spend more time belittling a kit for it's shortcomings than they do actually building it, this puts me off posting outside of my comfort zone. I have people tell me my stuff is good but to be honest I still lack confidence, this is my 1st push and you'll probably see it posted over Facebook a lot. At least I've got my 5 minutes of fame, it's all downhill from here
I've posted the build log on Facebook and a couple forums, someone said I should post over here as well. So I went to what I thought was LSP only to realise after I'd post that I'd posted on the other Large Scale site, I'm member of both and Chrome just logged me in, so if you see the same post over there it's not because I'm a posting whore lol

"So that would be a great thing if someone could do that job for less money. THX in advance"
Duh, sure would be great if someone would do all that very complicated work for a very low price.
Obviously you have no idea at all how much work is involved in making that 3D drawing.  Not to speak of printing it in 3D.
I'm in agreement with you that it would be great if someone would do that for a reasonable price. Now you know why aftermarket items cost so much. The maker needs to get paid for all the time he put into the making the model parts.
Back in ye good olden days when a modeler needed a certain part he would scratch build it himself out of wood. That was when modelers  were making models, rather than just buying parts others made and gluing them together.

On the other hand, if I wanted a certain part or even a complete model all I have to do is SCAN an accurate plastic model that exists in a smaller scale, Enlarge the part up to the scale one wants and then feed that electronic file into a 3D printer and produce the part.
Simple but do you have any idea how much it costs? There is the cost of the computer (it is not a cheap unit I assure you), plus the software for scanning, plus the software for printing, plus the printer plus the incredible amount of time necessary to learn how to use these software programs  All this for what? A model of a seat? Spend many thousands of dollars and months of time just to make a place to park a 1/32 scale pilot's butt?
Yes you can hire a place to do the illegal scanning and the printing but try to find one that will run the risk of making an illegal copy of a model and then reproduce it so they can sell you the copied part for a few dollars?  Yes that may work if you are dealing with mainland China but they will expect to get lots of money from you for the service.
That is why I prefer to whine. Indeed I have become an excellent whiner.
Or I can scratch build the part myself. Gee, what a novel idea.

Interesting idea, although in fairness, I most certainly would not buy it, as the idea of working standing-up is not my cup-of-tea...

I read here the best idea to save my neck and shoulders when working on details. Rather than bow and stretch them when working on small stuff, lower the seat to bring your head closer to the working area. Not my natural inclination, as I tend to sit rather high reletive to the table, but it actually works wonders ...

Lots of whining and whinging in this community when a superlative kit is introduced, yet lots of glossing over of obvious faults, fit problems, crappy engineering and shape issues when poor kits are introduced...

    Just an observation.

I don't care, I'll get one (or more - great basis for a Super/Goodyear Corsair) and enjoy the **** out of building, painting and weathering what are probably the best kits you can get in styrene....

3.66 inches scales to .114 inches (one-hundred and fourteen thousandths of an inch) in 1/32 scale. Less than an 1/8 of an inch (.125). I am soon to be starting my second one and I can't bring myself to perform major surgery on a kit that cost over $300.00 for .114. YMMV.

For mine, I am painting the nose, cockpit and radio room, the bomb bay and waist will be NMF with random ribs and whatnot painted. I just cannot see them sending out planes without painted cockpits or front nose, I would think the glare would be horrible from the unpainted aluminum.

Well, I pulled the trigger and received mine last week. It was a "it's better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission" buy, but nonetheless, I am the proud owner of my 2nd HK B-17 (and a yit-ton of Eduard stuff). I had so much fun building the first one, I plan to start on the 2nd as soon as I finish the Yamato that's on the bench now. It will look awesome on the tarmac next to my D-Day Doll.

At least I don't have to spend $100.00 on 13 bottles of Alclad this time.

I don't know about other modelers, but when I need paint, I want it now. As a result paints (as well as most of my consumables) are sourced locally.  The brands available to me here are Model Master enamels, Tamiya acrylics, and Alclad lacquers.

If I were to switch, I might consider Mr. Color and Sovereign Colourcoats.

moldmkr78 reacted to Darren Howie in Would there be any interest in a resin piece to correct the HK B-17 no
First yes the kit has a slight problem with the nose.
However the kit had been out for over three months before anyone even noticed there was a problem it's so small.
Fair enough if the nose looked like the Concorde but it doesn't.
I can't see the sense in hacking the nose off a gorgeous kit worth $400 bucks to fix a problem that is so small 99% of guys didn't notice it until clearly shown.
First tooling a piece of Hollow resin this size with similar detail would be beyond the best resin manufacturers.
Maintaining constant detail between injected and resin will be incredibly difficult and basically impossible to do. The disjuncture will be clear and far more noticeable than the original problem.
Getting the shape correct to blend in almost impossible at this size.
Getting the fit of the clear parts also incredibly difficult.
New resin clear parts will never gave the clarity of kit parts which will no longer fit.
All of this to fix a problem that is small in most people scheme of things compared to others.
Good luck if you choose to do it but practically speaking the inconsistency in resin quality and consistency means if you sell them good luck with the complaints about fit and quality of replacement clear parts.
I can't think of a more difficult or problematic project anyone has ever done or contemplated doing including a Brutish F-4 conversion which would be easy by comparison.
All to fix a subtle problem most people won't know about or notice..
I love guys who love the planes but the practicality of being able to create a fix would be beyond the skills of most to make and certainly beyond the skills of most to apply.

Hey, I like large scale replicas as well as the next LSP'er. I'm just not going to stress over details that varied from plane to plane depending on the maintenance crew, the ground crew, the flight crew, or basically anyone else that touched the aircraft during it's service. I also understand molds and mold making. It's not as easy as some would think to change any detail of any model without major repercussions with every part that touches the changed part. Considering that HK probably has close to a million dollars in tooling for this model, I'm just happy that we have a 1/32 B-17 that pretty much looks like any B-17 I've ever seen. I can appreciate the desire of those who wish to have every detail perfect, but sometimes it's just not possible in the real world.
