LSP_K2
If I had 12 million, I'd prefer to buy a really nice house (probably in a gated community), and a couple of cool old cars, plus a huge set of drums, probably Ludwig. I'm with you Kevin. I rather have a big log home with a wrap around porch and a couple of cows and sheep. Oh, and a 1967 Mustang fast back, red of course. R Palimaka
Saw her up close and in the air at Oshkosh last year. It is a thing of beauty. Thing is you'd need much more that 12 million to buy, insure, hangar, maintain and fuel her. For 12 million I think I would rather have two Mustangs and a bit left over to be able to keep them. Of course, that assumes I actually knew how to fly them. But we are talking dreams... Richard Edited September 3, 2020 by R Palimaka D.B. Out2gtcha
I got in with our very own Ken Friend (foiler on LSP) while he worked on a couple XP-82s for the guys building the 1:1 and was lucky enough to get a copy of his 1/32nd XP-82. It's a treasured rare gem in my stash that I hope to do justice to one day. R Palimaka
LSP_Matt
I'd like to be able to buy it, cut it in half and then go have dogfights with a mate. Matty D Bellis, Alain Gadbois and LSP_K2 1
BradG
12 million bucks, that's about 6 million too much.
Johnny Cloud
I'm not a specialist but $12M seems really steep even for the warbird market. In the current economic climate I have a hard time believing it could sell anywhere close to the asking price.
Oldbaldguy
With the exception of something like this, just about anyone can afford to buy an airplane. You can get something safe and decent for a lot less than the price of a new car, but the expenses of care and feeding even a really cheap one can be breathtaking and they never stop as long as you own it. Having been handed eyewatering bills for an annual inspection, I cannot imagine the yearly costs associated with a one of a kind warbird like the XP-82. Where do you get parts? Who do you get to work on it? How much is a tank of gas? And the list goes on and on. I just don't see this thing selling any time soon.
D.B. Andrus
It's sad that Paul Allen passed, the XP-82 would have found a home pretty quickly.
Troy Molitor
An epic story of determination. From what they started with to the end result is simply amazing. I hope it goes to a great home.
Juggernut
For $12 million dollars, I could have this (or something very similar): ...including flight crew, DOC's, and maintenance costs. I'd also Charter this jet out when I wasn't using it to offset the costs and if there were enough business generated, I could essentially fly free whenever I wanted to. I'd still have a several million leftover for future operational costs. I could fly non-stop from NY to LA, and then from LA to Hawaii, then on to Japan (you know the place...it's where they produce great model kits). I could also fly from NY to London, non-stop and be there in time for Telford (were it not cancelled) and STILL have money left to buy model kits when I got there. Can't do that with a P-82 and the cool factor is just as high. She' s decked out so I can have 15 fellow modelers fly with me (my treat) to Telford and STILL have a lot of money left over for the show (probably next year or two as well). I thought so, too, but apparently, it's because it's rare, in fact the only -82 that has flown anywhere for more than 30 years, and because it took 200,000 man hours to essentially new build this plane. The article mentioned that for the same price, you could buy 5 "regular" P-51s in restored condition. Not my cup of tea. 12m would go a thousand different places for me before I bought that.
