ClumsyDude
Haven't dropped in on this one for a while Quang ... some really super skills on display here. Great work on the canopy, just awesome stuff. Jim Sakai
quang
Welcome back Hurri fans for a little update. On today's menu: the lights. First, the landing lights. This is what we're trying to reproduce: This is what we get in the box: Spartan to say the least. Furthermore, it's way too small to accommodate the (thick) stock clear cover. So I decided to build new ones from scratch. But after several unsuccessful tries, I threw in the towel, jumped the gun and ordered the Brengun brass etchings. It's a no-brainer. FLY on the left. BRENGUN on the right. Getting ready to receive the light: Fiat lux I tried using the clear vac-formed covers I made but failed miserably. So I went for the obvious: clear packing tape for the cover and green painted Magic 3M tape for the framing: The result: Oops! The cover is so clear you can't see it. So here 'tis. Also note gun camera next to cannon location. Now onto the tail light. Full scale: Reworked kit light fairing and trim tab: Kit clear part added. Note refined stringers on tail and moving surfaces. Navigation lights: tjnted clear sprue and vac-formed cover. Green @ right Red @ left UV gel makes perfect ID light That's it folks. All comments and questions are welcome as usual. Until next time. Keep well, Quang TorbenD, Martinnfb, 109 and 5 others

quang
Looking great! This likely will be my next build so I'll be watching yours with interest. It's always good to have another person's work and insights to help avoid screwups. You're welcome, John. After all aren't those WIP threads for? Blaze the trail and save time and effort for those who follow? Q Edited September 2, 2016 by quang Sakai
quang
Well, let's go back to our build. Today's fare: the propeller I started by simulating the brass sheath on the blades with Milliput. The Rotol blades being made of wood composite, needed brass sheath on their leading edge to avoid premature wear. Real life Miniature Then I decided that the kit spinner was not pointy enough and set out to modify it with milliput (what else? ). A fine plastic rod acted as a guide. A tiny amount of milliput was added and put to shape. This is when ... … DISASTER STRUCK Let me explain. For years I've been using milliput for sculpting figures and as a modelling aid. I developed a technique to speed up the curing by putting the putty in the oven for 15-20 minutes at 35°C with no mishap for the putty or the surrounding plastic. Excepting for this time. I was distracted and put the oven temp at 75°C instead. The result: A perfect illustration of Murphy's Law Sooo, it looks like I need a new spinner. Do you guys have any idea where I can find one? Your input is very welcome. Now while sitting here waiting for a solution, maybe I should revive the Great White Whale and take my stalled Kitty Hawk P-39 out of its slumber. What do you think? ade rowlands
I contacted Fly themselves via their website when on test fitting the Resin gear bay to the lower wing I found it to be too small by a few MM all the way around. I received not 1 but 2 replacements free of charge within the week. Shawn M
tomv87
Oh man, sorry to see that. Have you built a Tamiya Zeke? There is an extra spinner in that kit that may serve as a starting point? I don't know if the size is right though... Tom
quang
Awright, Hurri lovers. We can rest easy now! I just got an e-mail from Jiri saying that Main Maintenance Unit back East has heard about my mishap and that replacement parts are now on their way to the Belgian front. Like the cavalry in the old western movies, FLY MODELS came to the rescue. I cannot say enough good things about those small companies who REALLY care The big adventure continues. Watch this space! Thank you all for your concern, Kind regards, Quang tomv87, Sakai, TorbenD and 1 other

LSP_Kevin
That's a bummer, Quang, but it's great to see Fly coming to the rescue, almost unprompted! Looking forward to further progress. Kev
MikeMaben
If you plan to rework your new spinner, the problem (such as it is) with the Fly spinner isn't that it's too pointy, it's that it's a wee bit too short. Compared to the best drawing I can find and with photos, the old Revell MkII kit spinner is nearly perfect. The problem with 'it' is that the blades are molded to the spinner and would need to be sliced off and blade openings created. Good luck with your new spinner Quang, looks like you're on the right track, shaping up nicely . quang and Sakai

Here's the Fly Hurri fitted with the old Hasegawa Spit V spinner . Looks rather good even though the back plate is a wee too wide. Still I'd wait for the Fly replacement to arrive to draw conclusions. Could be I'll keep both Q tomv87, Sakai, Rocat and 1 other
