  1. Thanks

First off...simply amazing detailing and photography! Your technique is perfect. You nailed it. Great job!

But...(yeah, there's always a but...)...I've looked at this thread several times now and I was reluctant to post but the head on shots were bothering me for some reason. Then it hit me. It's the wings. There's too much anhedral. I work around 15's all day and there is no noticeable droop of the wings. I even went out on the shop floor to confirm and they are pretty much straight across the span.

Disregarding that the model is absolutely stunning.

Thanks for those pics you linked. You're right...it may be an effect of the camera lens. I tried standing in front of our E's in the hanger and could not duplicate that perspective with my human eye. And I do know how one can be jumped on for posting what might be perceived as a negative comment and in no way was I meaning to be negative WRT to your mudhen. You have one damn fine model there and should be proud of what you've done. Plus the fact that Tamiya makes a darn nice kit it's hard to see how the wing anhedral/dihedral could be messed up.

    take care,

    Thanks Rob,

Actually those old bipes aren't my favorites either...LOL I hate the rigging part. this was an old Monogram kit. Lot's of ejector pin marks and filling and sanding required. I guess it goes to show those old vintage kits can turn out nice.

as a side note they include a carrier deck printed on the bottom of the box. here's a shot of the plane on the deck:

I hope to get an article and more pics together soon for Rato. I need to finish the pilot first though.

Glad the the journey is over. The kit was underwhelming but overall I'm happy with the end result. It's clichéd and iconic. MRP krapplack red for the overall finish. As usual it goes on like buttah. I substituted Master barrels for the kit PE. The kit has its issues; warped wings, crap instructions, questionable engineering fitting, lots and lots of flash and seam lines that need clean-up and frah-gee-lay structure that needs wire bracing. Admittedly I got caught up in all the hype surrounding this kit but I do like the Dr.I and if i ever get around to building the Roden F.I i have in the stash it will be an interesting comparison. For now though my WWI itch has been scratched and satisfied for quite some time. Yeah, not at all like a WNW. Lots of flash. Dodgy fit, sink marks. Some things fit fine, others not at all. For example, the left MG drops right in, the right one needs a lot of tweaking to get it to fit properly. The instructions are very vague at times on what parts to use for which version so you'll need to check references.
For the bracing i used .015" music wire. It's definitely needed on the landing gear. Without it it's very wobbly.
I used EZ line for the aileron cable going from the fuse to the upper wing.
For cables going from the fuse or wings to the control horns i used stretched sprue.

There was a lot of hype built up for this kit. But in no way is this WNW calibre and it can be seen this kit was rushed to market to capitalize on WNW's demise.

    Big update..
    Wingfold has lots of PE..

Techmod masks for outside, insides were done using the carrier as a template

    MRP paint was used...

Jig required to set wheels plus brake lines added to gear:

Techmod decals were used, some finesse was required for the port side insignia to fit over the air vent scoop as solvaset had zero effect on the decals. Walkways were done using ammo paste.

    Getting close to done...

Now please go to the Ready For Inspection forum section for the final reveal....

Fuse is now closed. I also made the front cowl removable.
