So a little more on the Corsair, I had originally sprayed the wheel wells in Salmon primer and was going to leave them that way but since back on the build decided to paint them white and then weather them a little.

So with the u/c bay paint work complete I've mated the wing section to the fuselage and also added the tail feathers.

Now need to get my ass in gear and work on the engine.....  . Sad times as I hate engine build/ detail work!!

Looking forward with high hopes for this one. I've been waiting for an early P-40 that doesn't suffer from Trumpeter's "600 lb. Pilot Syndrome". It's the same reason I don't have a Hellcat, P-51B, or a.... you get the picture. Fingers crossed.

    Awww thanks fellas

Very kind, and I am still enjoying every minute with my new family when I can see them

so, semi-normal service needs to be resumed and the first thing was adding the rear bulkhead - this was just painted litho with some rivets added where I can see them and the fixing straps..

..the turtledeck panels that go around this make up a central top panel which is dope taped and hinged side panels which I think are ply as they have doped edges. they are certainly painted in silver dope rather than polished metal and sit above the rib tapes etc as it terminates in this area.. (I don't think the light is period so i am not including it.. or at least its not on period pics I have)

..I made a tape rubbing of the exact shape from the model and cut them from litho..

..before I could make that I had to sort out the rib tapes..

..this has been a bit of a trial - I ordered a sheet of decal film as that had given best results and is made by the same folks as micro sol & set so I thought would work well.. firstly I ordered clear film - that was a mistake, I couldn't see what I was doing so I ordered white..

..these just sit over each stringer position..

..the stuff is very sticky on both sides oddly when it is wet and I found it quite hard to work with - it's also quite rubbery

..as far as micro sol and set, it wrinkles & stays wrinkled quite badly so this could only be used very sparingly where it overlaps or needs to conform..  all of which leaves me a bit worried about adhesion when it comes to masking...

..I did a few tests and it seemed ok, so we will see...

soon got all that needed doing done..

..the effect looks fine, but it is a lot of effort!

..top metal (wood ) panel added..

..then everything was left in the airing cupboard for 12 hrs and primed with mr surfacer - once that had dried it was airbrushed with alclad white aluminium..

..the side access door is only dry fitted for now..

..and the turtledeck panels all fitted - the hinges were as they are on the Nimrod pics I have and looked better than gaps so I went with them - just scored microtube..

so I need to sort of wrap this all to protect it and then start on the metal panelwork moving forward - should be fun

I've been doing some painting over the last couple of sessions.  Also I've deployed the oils on the wooden bits.  Apologies for the rather rushed photos.

There will now be a break of a few days while the oils dry thoroughly and I get on with an F-104 that's also on the bench (not much of a contrast, eh?)

Nothing spectacular, but I have a couple of recently finished projects, and thought I would try and post some pictures. The Revell P-51D NA-5. The other is the Trumpeter P-40E.  I know...a little too pristine, but I haven't really  gotten into the black arts of weathering yet.

    evening ladies

back with a little more progress..

started by cutting out the big access door in the fuselage - unlike later metal aircraft, the fit seems quite rudimentary which suits me

..it's just resting in place now, but evn so..

..then onto the wing roots - thing here is the front of the wing actually goes into the fuselage - there is no fairing until the rear half flares out...

so first I made up brass shapes to mirror the wing profile and used these to cut the shape. I also used the spar points to set their actual position so they neatly butt the wing so I could build up the fairing to them..

..with the templates in place it was a matter of bulking out and stregthening their fitment - as there is a chop into the fuselage I had to add some red dope paint to disguise some places..

..the ribwork was masked off to stop filler or sanding spoiling it

    ..& filled with P38..

    ..from the bottom..

..and soon the fillets were complete..

..also added a rigging wire mount to where the forward U/C mount is and generally cleaned up the U/C fittings..

..moving to the nose, I noticed the cowl is quite hollow and can be seen behind the spinner..

..I made sure the nose was flat and true and added a litho disc to ensure a perfect circle - once I had filled to this, I set about removing as much as I could with a dremel burr to cut with..

..added an internal mount and a spigot that goes right back into a hole in the brass tubular fuselage structure...

also cut out the little indentation at the bottom of the cowl..

..and with a little dry fit, she is starting to look like an aeroplane..

..nimble little figher - oh wait, it needs another wing...

..now in other news, I became a grandfather yesterday, with the most precious little angel Amber coming into the world..

..to say I am thrilled, just doesn't do justice to the feeling - I am so proud of my new little family - my daughter has started calling me "papa planes"

    until next time

    Hi lads & lasses

the Fury is moving along at a glacial pace - the next bit to do was the upper U/C strut seen here in all it's aerodynamic glory, along with many details that need reproducing..

..note the different fixings, the bracket mounting it to the fuselage lug and the big nut at the front..

..I started with the 3D printed parts I did - it was beyond me to get the curved fairing at the top so I did a flat profile outline and set about sanding them to shape. First up some tape to define the boundary and allow a scribed reference line.. the one at the back has been shaped..

..the lug mounts were made and the four nuts, plus the opening for the big nuts at the front were milled out..

..I toyed with skinning the tops, but they would be very difficult so I decided to paint them and skin the rest in litho - I don't think they look too bad..

..a ring of solder was added where the upper & lower sections meet to represent the turned edge..

..the lowere compression struts fit via pins to the axle..

..as do the upper mounts where they meet the fuselage - here the geometry is all out, but checking they fit the mounts..

..here I have removed the exhausts and am having them remade as I wasn't happy with how they stagger which I took from the Westburg plan vs how flush with the skin they are in photos..

..another step forward after much experimentation is trying to get the same ribbed effect on the wing tips as is possible with the plastic card skin..

..here I found annealed litho made for a more forgiving material to take the compound curves involved - here is a test piece, the real one will be better still..

..also Britmodeller member 'Lightpainter' pointed out the R/H cockpit wall is metal on the Lukgraph Nimrod he is building & asked wasn't it the same on the Fury - well you can clearly see here the big metal removable access panel which is again missed on the Westburg plans..

..as such that side of the cockpit needed to be re-done - he also sent me loads of good pics showing areas I was missing details on..

..here the panel has been added and the ribbing..

...while working on that sidewall, I started to make the complicated oxygen control panel - a bit of which can be seen here on the right..

..I had made a few PE bits including the mounting panel as the outline is shown in the Danish Nimrod drawings, I started to make up the main component by using the bevelled top of a household screw and adding bits to it..

..there is also a wooden disc mounting plate seen so this was made from punched thin plywood..

..I didn't take any other pics until I had finished it, but it is a collection of a lot of brass parts and took a few days to make - the two dials have decals coming and are sized to take 2.5mm punched acetate discs..

..and it sort of goes here..

    ..and thats it for now

So I made a proper start today.  As I'd already removed the wings from the sprue, I decided that instead of starting in the cockpit as is usual, I would build the wings.  This involves simply adding the four ailerons, one per wing.  Just to add a bit of strength, I thought I'd pin them, as the kit joint is a simple butt joint of the hinges, two per aileron.  So I found a suitable drill bit - 0.4mm - and got out my stock of Albion alloys rod.

The starboard upper aileron is fixed, the others await fixing.  The holes aren't as deeply drilled as the length of the rod suggests, I did them longer than needed for ease of handling, they'll be clipped before fitting.  Notice how the port lower only has one bit of rod?  I broke a drill bit in the hole, so will have to accept a single fixing rod in this one.

Next up, the engine, the 100 Hp Gnome.

Incidentally, as you can see, I've developed a habit of labelling sprues: it does make life easier by reducing the amount of hunting for the right sprue; if they are identified on the sprue (common these days) it's often not very big, and always in the last corner you look at.

I'm a bit late to the Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX Appreciation Society party, but better late than never!  This won't be a proper detailed build WiP for several reasons, one of which is that I actually started the kit in 2016 but (and say this quietly) got bored with it!!   However like the phoenix it has risen from the ashes inspired by:

This is a figure of an ATA girl, Air Transport Auxiliary, amongst whose duties it was to move aircraft to various locations during the war so that squadrons always had spare aircraft to hand. It transpires the figure is based on a famous photo of Maureen Dunlop:

I had to buy the figure as soon as I saw it, but then, what to do with it?  She had to be delivering an aeroplane to somebody, and a little research soon revealed that a Spitfire LF Mk IX was delivered to 56 Squadron from 39 MU on 2 March (I don't know if Maureen was the pilot, but let's pretend she was.)  So out came the dusty box.   The engine I had previously worked on:

so that's almost ready, but yesterday I assembled the wings:

and was blown away by the precision and fit, just WOW!  Today on with the cockpit which includes Barracuda upgrade:

Lots still to add but it's progress!  Talking of fit:

I lost one of the flap indicator covers so had to make one!  Sharing the diorama with Maureen will be a motley crew:

all of which will be repainted.  More soon I hope!

Hey there everyone.  I know I've been mostly absent on here over the last few years, but after a few moves, my model space is finally in a good place, and I'm back to building.  After a couple small-scale projects to get the mojo going again, I'm back to the LSPs.  This is the Copper State Nieuport XXIII, which is just an excellent kit.  Truly on par with Wingnuts for detail, ease of building, instructions, and accuracy.

Let me know what you guys think, I hope you enjoy the build.

Ok, here is a quick look at my next project.

This is the Combat Models F-106. I picked this up about 8 months ago and just recently bumped this up to the "Next" pile.

Yes I know, I already have a couple of builds going, but this has been calling me.

I have already cut the parts out from the backing sheet. Surface detail is quite good for a vac. It has a mix of recessed panel lines and raised panels. It comes with 2 vac canopies.

Anyway I will begin construction slowly as I wrap up other projects.

Here is an overall shot of the main components. My 35 year old 1:48th model provides a comparison in size.
