Iain
I know, I know - far too easily sidetracked but... One of my flying buddies asked me to build him a model of an aeroplane he owned a few years ago - lovely little pre-war single-seater - the Dart Kitten. Have been pulling together photos and drawings and have finally started cutting plastic - great fun - and very therapeutic after hacking up far too many plastic kits, This is where we're at: Hopefully to end up looking like this. Have fun! Iain Uilleann, Zero77, bstachel and 6 others

Iain
Hadn't thought of it like that Tim - but yes - and Tony Woollett (I remember his superb 1:36 inter-war civil models from being a member of Thames Valley Scale Model Club in late 80s). Both superb modellers! I've not fully scratch-built anything for about 20 years - but this is a pretty simple subject/shapes - and is actually coming together quite quickly - just a couple of hours so far. I'll make balsa patterns and vac the fuselage upper sections and nose cowl. Wings will be balsa core with 5 thou sheet skinning - something I remember learning from a TV programme back in the mid 70's - I think it was called Model World with Bob Symes. Let's see if I can get this one finished - for anyone that's not had a go at anything like this it really is good fun! Iain
wunwinglow
Bloomin' ' eck! Model World! They used my FGR2 to talk about plastic model planes! It was filmed at the BBC studios at Whiteladies Road, here in Bristol. When they were filming the intro for the car model program, Mr Symes decided, unscripted, to pick up the Airfix 4 1/2 litre Bentley on the table in front of him, the bumpers came away in his hands leaving the rest of the car on the table! Thank goodness someone had brought some glue...... Tim themongoose, Iain and airscale 2

airscale
..old school indeed - what an inspiring project Iain amazed you can turn out most of an aeroplane in a matter of days (and ever so slightly jealous..) ..really looking forward to this one - especially as these techniques are not often seen anymore do you have an engine in mind - or a frenzied session with a punch & die set? Iain
Hi again folks - I seem to have found my MoJo again - with a bit of a vengeance... I mentioned on Peters amazing Tigercat build about using Halfords Filler Primer to sort out uneven plastic sheet structures - well - the Kitten is an ideal case as, using thin plastic sheet, I also had flat areas/sagging between internal formers. Simple solution - apply the filler primer in layers to the affected areas and sand back to a smooth curve: Happy modelling!Iain Derek B, BiggTim and sandokan

Iain
In other news... Being on a bit of a modelling roll at the moment - I've spent a few more hours on the Kitten - balsa wing cores shaped and ready for skinning, elevators made and further work on fuselage. Want to get this one finished - whilst my MoJo is in overdrive I may just stand a chance! Iain Zero77
DeanKB
That is a tiny little engine - two cylinders pumping out 36HP! Top speed of 95mph must be in a dive, in a hurricane with the wings sheared off?
Iain
OK - I promised some photos so here's another update for anyone that might be interested... Shaped balsa wing cores: General layout - there's an aeroplane starting to appear! Old technique for doing fabric wing skins over the balsa core - a biro run along the *inside* of the 10 thou styrene wing skin: Must use an epoxy glue to bond the skin to the balsa because you need a little 'jiggling' time to get the core and the skin properly aligned. Bond lower side of skin to underside first and allow glue to go off before fully wrapping the skin around the wing for a second gluing: And after bonding: Back in a mo... Iain
Bare cockpit interior spayed interior green - before bonding 30 thou fuselage underside in place: And initial cut out of ailerons: More when there's more - need to get balsa patterns done for nose fairings next so I can get them vacced. Have fun! Iain sandokan, D Bellis and Derek B
