While I'm messing about trying to finish my 109e-3 thought I'd post my build of Tamiya's gorgeous Corsair F4U-1A I did a while back (I know, another one! But it's such a beautiful kit). The subject is Greg "Pappy" Boyington's 833 from the famous Black Sheep squadron VMF-214 based on Vella Lavella in late 1943. The kit was a pleasure to build with excellent engineering from Tamiya and plenty of detail to play with.

As such, aftermarket was kept to a minimum only using Barracuda cockpit stencils and placards and Montex canopy and insignia masks. I scratchbuilt some additional engine detail, the cowl flap pulley system, and wheel well plumbing. Scratchbuilding the cowl flap pulley system in particular sent me a bit nuts and, given my time again, would probably just stump up for the Vector replacement set.

Paint was mainly Gunze and Tamiya acrylics, weathering with hairspray chipping, salt fading, and oils.

    Cheers, Kirby

Not bad on the inside either. Built OOB with basic masking tape harnesses.

I've been busy getting rid of the interior detail/ ribbing from inside of the fuselage in order to fit the AM resin pieces in there. After accomplishing that and test fitting it's looking pretty good from about every angle so far.
    Details removed:

The interior tub, landing gear bay side panels, and rear wall of the bay seem to fit well:

I test fitted the original rear wall in place to see how high it sat above the fuselage to ensure a proper wing to fuselage fit. Here's the OOB height.

and the height with the AM Aires resin piece fitted into place. Looks good from here:

So......I tried my luck with the wing test fit. I think I'm good with this:

I have to agree, though, on the desire for a nice Tamiya rendering (or 3) of the P-38.  I think they'd sell heaps.

Grabbed from another site, just a really nice shot of a P-38 in flight.  Nice details shown for weathering, turbo details, etc.   Now if only Tamiya-san would provide us with a decent Large Scale P-38 kit!

The rear engine faces are now glued into the surrounding engine bearers. There are brass pins and consecutive fitting brass tubes in the engine and rear faces, and fit fairly precisely together, so I just stuck the rears on the engines, got the engines where I needed them, then super glued the rear engine faces to the bearers. Once that was set, I utilized some JB Weld to make sure they stayed put. I left the engines on the bearers attached to the rear sections until the next day when the JB Weld was cured enough to do some heavy lifting to secure the rear engine faces.

    In progress:

Engines now fit exactly where they need to fit in order to get the surrounding nacelles and cowls to fit where they need to be:

The nacelles still fit really nicely, and the engines fit well with or without the nacelles and with or without the cowls:

The cowls seem to fit decently at this stage, and seem like they might only need a bit of fettling to get them to fit very nicely:

Hopefully to be back on the big girl more this week/weekend.

    Cheers

FINALLY!  Sorry for the huge delay.  This one has been done for a while, but I've been neglecting the photo side of things.  Here are a few now that she's in the case...
You can find the build thread here.

The replacement Eduard resin spinner and prop arrived (well, the new spinner and baseplate) so I had to alter the already-glued props to the hub to make the prop diameter wider to clear the wider spinner.  I didn't quite get the spacing right on one of the props... BUT!  I did finally get the spinner properly painted!  And yes, the main gear doors are UP.  Little bits of red decal cover the gun ports.  Irregularly shaped as I've seen in some pictures.

View of those beautiful AMUR flaps and that crystal clear Aerocraft Models canopy by @Ali62.  Talk about a huge difference from the kit parts. Decals are from Kits-World for the nose checkers and Passion Wagon markings.

And the Revell Cockpit, augmented by lots and lots of Barracuda plaquards and stencils, Tamiya bits, Eduard bits and bobs.  Not to mention a CMK resin seat and Radu's worn cockpit floor decal.  I think there is more money in the cockpit aftermarket than the cost of everything else on the plane...

One of these days I'll get around to doing a weathered and faded aircraft again...

Thanks for looking and I hope you enjoyed!

This is looks great, I do see in cad, at least by the bottom engine cowl double cheek panel lines, they may of follow the FHCAM bird that has that vs the Jumpei drawings single panel line down center line, as also per photo on right

Planning for the ‘fun’ part - the rigging!

Need to prep the relevant anchor points on the airframe before any further paint/assembly.

British rigging wires of the period were a flattened aero foil section that varied in thickness depending on where it was used on the airframe - so out with an original period rigging wire diagram and specification table so I can match the different photo etched wires produced by Radu in his RB Productions range to the original.

Looking through Bobs Buckles site now - thinking of combining the etched flat wires anchored into some of Bobs eyelets with EZ Line - may all go horribly wrong...

I feel like I’m out-geeking myself with this one - wish me luck!

OK - I failed on the photos yesterday evening - but I did manage to get the fuselage together and, despite previous concerns, everything fitted together perfectly!

An awful lot of this won't be seen, but the instruments have clear 'glasses' and the controls are rigged (at least to the back of the cockpit).

For the control cables I was doing them with 0.1mm nickel silver wire - but gave up and resorted to fine E Z Line instead.

This aircraft is more of a representative of the type than any actual machine.  Though a machine with these codes did fly intruder missions over the Eastern UK.  Some had white fuselage bands.  Some had white stripes under the wings.  And some had the Nachjagdverband shield under the canopy.  But others did not.  My main goal was to work with the black and not be distracted by white and other colors.  Speaking of the white markings...  these are actually 50/50 Tamiya IJA Gray and Tamiya White.  The markings were cut on my Silhouette Portrait.

    I hope you like it!

This lockdown situation gave me a little more time to do some modelling. I have given up on 1/32 and 1/24 i think. I keep buying them , then loads of aftermarket , starting them , getting bored with them and selling them on. Time for a change. I want to build good quality models , that actually fit on a shelf. I will not be using aftermarket if i can help it.  I have been getting more into the Pacific Theatre and so have decided to go with planes from that. I will be sticking to Accurate miniatures or italeri , Tamiya and Hasegawa. I really dont have the patience for poor fitting kits anymore.
This kit has really bought the fun back into modelling. Beautifully detailed and easy to build. I have a great time just building from the box. The problem is i think i need the rest of the F4U line now!
Apologies for pics i took them on my Iphone
