Woman in front of me at Ace Hardware just now was desperately trying to find an N95 respirator mask to buy to go to the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show with.  I told her that a) N95 masks are useless without a fit test by a qualified tester, b.) an N95 mask is designed to filter out bacteria like TB, c) Wuhan coronavirus can infect you just as well through your eyes as through your nose and mouth, and d) you stand a much better chance of dying in a car accident on the way to the Gem Show than of getting coronavirus from anyone there.  And you stand a MUCH better chance of dying from regular old flu than from coronavirus, based on epidemiological statistics so far.

Get your flu shot, wash your hands frequently (or use hand sanitizer), and drive defensively.  And don't listen to the media.

    Hi,
We do both types of rockets Mk1 and Mk3 rails both suitable for the Mosquito with a choice of HE or armour piercing, the mounting stubs are for the Typhoon but we do the Mosquito mounting stubs as well so it's a small job to change  the stub mountings.

Bob MDC reacted to Jennings Heilig in Question re: Kit reviews and reviews in general
There’s a difference between a review and a review.  What makes me crazy is a “review” that’s nothing more than a description of what’s in the box.  As far as it goes, that’s fine, but don’t call it a review.  It’s a look-see.  If you don’t know anything about the subject, don’t tell me it’s the best kit that’s ever been made of the Mumblypudge Rapier Mk.6, when everybody who knows anything about the kit knows it’s a POS.  Prime example of that is the “review” of the AMK 1/48 F-14D on Hyperscale yesterday.  The guy made the kit sound like the second coming of Jesus, when there have been numerous fact based reviews of the kit that have (very fairly, and factually) raked the kit over the coals from stem to stern.  There’s a difference between really pretty, and accurate.  Lots of scale plans and lots of kits are really pretty, but a lot of them are garbage when it comes to scale fidelity (cough... KH... Trumpeter... cough).

Yes, I’m a rivet counter.  Detail work is what I do, both in my day to day work, and in my hobby work.  I care about stuff some people don’t care about, but that’s what makes the difference between a kit that “looks like a Mumblypudge Rapier Mk.6 to me!” and a highly detailed scale replica of the aircraft.

I am not "offended". Highlighting relevant text in "bold" is not "shouting". Just trying to clarify matters.
I was directly involved in the production of this kit.

Just when I think it's safe to go back in the water, along comes another update for the forum software. Egads! I think I'm gonna need a bigger keyboard. In any case, I'll aim to get it done over this coming weekend (possibly even today - Friday), and will try to let you guys know when I'm about to go in.

Bob MDC reacted to Radub in Scribing Tools? What are the cheaper alternatives to Tamiya's Fine Engraving Tools?
Because I was mentinoed above, I would like to  clarify what types of scribers we have.

We have two types of scribers:

    - A scriber that "trenches" a line by removing material in one long "swarf" in one stroke: http://www.radubstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=77_110&products_id=329&zenid=30eaa5186feb3f8889c74d8c528eeb2b
This is ideal for all scribing, especially on "uniform" materials.

    - A scriber that "files" away material like a file and this has to be used "back-and-forth" like a file: http://www.radubstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=77_110&products_id=417&zenid=30eaa5186feb3f8889c74d8c528eeb2b
This is ideal for scribing across leagind edges, top of fuselage, and very useful when scribing across dissimilar materials such as a panel line that comes across a puttied area on plastic, where the "regular" scribers usually yield non-uniform lines. The tips can be bent sideways to get into difficult areas such as inside engine intakes or wheel wells.

We also make scribers that are set at a varity of angles or can scribe two lines at a time: http://www.radubstore.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=77_110&zenid=30eaa5186feb3f8889c74d8c528eeb2b

Bob MDC reacted to Radub in Why we don't have these obvious WWI Large Scale Aircraft kits?
They may be issued in the future. Just because we do not have them right now it does not mean that they are ignored.
Why are some subjects "covered to death" while othjer subjects are "ignored"? The entire model industry is powered by the enthusiasm of the people involved in the manufacturing. But you can't take enthusiasm to the bank. You need cold hard cash. And the only way to make cash is to have some "cash cows" in your inventory. So, for every "obscure" kit you will have to have the "German" and the "popular". Just wait until the "cash cow" generates the necesary cash and then these kits will be made. And no, the "spendthrift benefactor" (Sir Peter, :-) etc) is not the "cash cow". They may sponsor the first kit, then the following kits have to be made from profit.

Not a fan of Shapeways finish but I get a job in from time to time , Halfords grey primer followed by Mr Primer Surfacer 1500 straight on top of the Halfords before it dries. I know it sounds daft but "it works for me"

The technology already is smoothed out, now is as good as it's going to get, this technology is old, I remember seeing it in 1991 and to be honest the quality has shifted up quite a bit on the machines that are as expensive as a house. But the little machines that you are all seeing now only exist because the patents ran out a few years ago and most people have been ignorant of their existence. The media are constantly wetting their pants with comments like "you will just have to press a button and hey presto out it comes" now where have I heard that before?
Oh yes when CNC was new. You can just imagine it press 'A' for aeroplane and 'w' for windows and retire to bed.
It makes me laugh when I hear some comments because my first question is " How is your 3D CAD?" and the answer is usually 'well I've played around with NutterCAD or whatever in 2D at work.
The thing is also these printers they like models that are solid CAD models and not Surface models and an old hand at this like me finds that a big ask sometimes.
Also you do have to know about scale thicknesses and what's likely to work and still look like the real thing, because everything is a cheat on the models we build.

    Hi Guys,
We have had a few mails about MDC are no longer trading.
I can assure you this is far from the truth we are alive and well at Theddlethorpe !!
I admit we had some site and mail problems during an enforced upgrade by our store provider but all is now well and looking to the future.

Hope to have some new items shortley as always no information until we have stock ready ( I could have a rant about lists that are published with no hope in hells chance of attaining ) but that could be for a later post, how about "grumpy old buggers rant" (hope I can say that).

These first two books are my favourites and they  have a lot of useful information:
    https://hlj.com/aero-detail-13-north-american-p-51d-mustang-mdgad13
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/P-51-Mustang-Restored-Enthusiast-Color/dp/0879389915
These two books cover "Lil' Margaret" which is a very accurately-restored machine.

    Also useful are:
    https://www.amazon.com/P-51D-Mustang-Walk-Around-No/dp/0897473604
    https://www.amazon.com/Building-P-51-Mustang-Manufacturing-Americans/dp/1580071902

You have to be careful when looking at models on the internet. Some models are superb, but some have errors, and people indiscriminately copy other people's errors to the point that "bad rubbish" has become "agreed consensus". Look at the photos in the books above first.

It doesn't seem to make us any more noticable in my experience!
