Spitfire Mk 1 early - with only a few extras....

Wonder if I can join in here with a blue box of frustration... eerrr... happiness... and join Tim with this kit. Really OK, but needs some tweaks and I will do my best... I got it very much second hand, it seems to be complete but the wings are glued together and random parts are sprayed in watery lurid green....  "sigh"   ... life is never easy but we do take care of orphans....

Definitely less than 10% started and appears to be complete... I have only a few AM items and definitely will struggle at times.... Any help appreciated! Regards, Marc.

So I do have a few extras to add to the build... would really like to do "The Virgin"..... The Barracuda parts look really good... but I have no seat belts, may just use tape (shock and horror) also the instrument panel and decals don't match even to the naked eye and the wheels are, well, naf... So flaps up, canopy closed, throttle to the firewall and here goes...

More pics of the contents of the orphan and AM help....

And where I got to now, at least the prop is together, the blades have a sharp leading edge and blunt trailing edge.... (What was the tooling guy thinking??) but some sanding and scraping work sorted it ... a bit.... Some cockpit work done, note the grey patches where the ejection pin markings are removed...Starting on trimming the resin bits too.....

Hi Marc!

It´s a really nice kit, but it need some help in places!

You have adressed the most glaring omission with the Barracuda set you have, but I´d recommend a new instrument panel and a Barracuda seat with belts (just beautiful and SO much better).

The instrument panel is mirrored in the kit, the decal is the most correct option here!

New wheels and exhausts don´t hurt either...

Cheers!

Thank You all for joining in and the replies! Yes, Stefan, I agree completely with your comments on the IP, seat and exhausts, but well, AM not easy to come by here, so I will have to use ingenuity instead! But firstly, a ham-fisted moment and a cracked oil cooler, will need repair!

And the seat assembled and refined a bit, but the detail on the padding is spurious, so filled the detail with putty and I have a plan for the proper padding pattern...

Hopefully some more soon! Regards, Marc

The instrument panel and its decal are mirror images of each other iirc, and I can't recall offhand which is correct.  I'd suggest a Yahu panel - I really like them.  As for the wheels, I used an Eduard Brassin set when I did mine.

Welcome aboard, always good to see a Spittie.

Thank you for all the replies to this thread! I am still progressing, first chipping, scraping and filing out the holes for the Barracuda radiator and oil cooler.... This takes a little while and needs care... be warned.. fingers can get nicked! But stick to the 'Cuda instructions at this point...

Note some of the internal structure of the upper wing and indeed the wing fairing structure on the fuselage half needs trimming....

Here a close up, sorry, poor light, but it shows how the leading edge of the radiator base must be lined up flush with the wing surface and how the sides of the resin part actually fit below the surface of the lower wing... note the rear of the resin part should be flush with the surface of the lower wing again... it looks rough here, but a smear of putty will fix... and then...

...and then the resin radiator cover fits almost perfectly... (Don't tell Barracuda but the Revell part fits just as well!) Well, onward and upward... Regards, Marc...

And so a small update.. I'm sure you've all heard about the Kotare Mk1 coming out, and modellers of lesser moral fibre would simply scrap this project, but I will continue... as best I can! Here is a comparison of the instrument panel moulding to the decals.... I need to make a plan as no AM is possible... but decals are the wrong size, place etc.... on careful consideration, the panel would work for a Mk IX (The other kit from these mouldings,) but the  decal bears no resemblance to anything I have found online, and the white outlines are not great and most of the dials too big.... I don't think there's a swop of panels from left to right, just a lot of work to do...

Also working on the seat, I have no AM here too, bust adding the leather padding on the seat back, and using strips of thin plastic card, well sanded and Tamiya primer to sort the gaps, it still needs some sanding...

I know things look a bit scruffy so far, a combination of the second-hand kit and my enthusiasm, but I will endeavour to neaten up and fly right...

Thanks for looking in!

Regards,

Marc

Thanks for checking in, Kev! Yes, only a little done on this family weekend, but at least I got the prop painted, now I have something to stick on the front when I get the model done... And a few bits - the early rudder pedals only had one step, the second step came a bit later... also started on removing some stuff from the Mk IX instrument panel, it really is not that far off from the Mk I, just to add there is a lot more coming on that panel! .... and just to say my researches probably indicate the seat I'm doing is probably wrong (never say never...)... in these early Spitties it should be the metal seat, it has a transverse hollow in the seat pan from side to side but has similar features otherwise... Pavla do a resin seat of this in 1/32. We hope the Kotare folks pay attention to these details...!

ATB and enjoy your modelling! Marc.
