Love the gunsight and maps...nice touch. :speak_cool:

Watching and learning...this is like school for modelers.

Thanks for the kind words Bill! Quite a complement considering some of your builds.........especially all the scratch work on your F-86. :D

LSP I think is one of those unique places that almost EVERYONE can lean something from someone else, and yet at the same time, you can end up showing someone else some new tricks too. Its nice.............not to mention the fact that you have all of that AND none of the not-so-nice stuff that can occasionally come along with other sites.

Bit of small progress..........

There ALWAYS has to be some screw up on my part during builds. I hope this is my only one. This one occurred while trying to get the fuse halves together. NOT usually a problem for me.........and in this case, almost especially easy as the bottom of the fuse is WAY open, so the seam can be glued from the inside for strength, then filled from the outside if needed.

I accidentally got in more of a hurry than I should have and ran some thin CA down one side of the vertical fin, and then stupidly used de-bonder on it. Not knowing the de-bonder does mess up the plastic a bit; crazed it or melted it slightly. Either wa, not a huge deal as I was going to have to re-scribe some panels any way.

Lesson learned, from now on Ill stick to fingernail polish remover, as unlike de-bonder, it wipes out the CA without changing the kit plastic.

Got the fuse together, cockpit installed, and chin intake works situated

The new model stand from HLJ is quite versatile I must say.......I took off the 2 outer pylons for holding the wings up and now just have the fuse pylons.

Chin intake tubes look cool in there I think, but have not yet put on the front lip. The intake parts are not 110% aligned, as the fuse alignment called for me to not bond it to the apposing fuse side, but I discovered after dry fitting the front lip, once its attached, you cant notice anything off.

Well back to the grindstone!

Cheers for lookin in on me,

Brian

This one's comming along quickly compared to your last project, and the work is very nice as usual. one of the many detail that stands out and gives it that touch of realism is emaps/charts in the pit.

Thanks Fred!

Well that last project was a labor of love and was well worth the outcome. :D However I seem to be compensating the opposite direction with this one on the "clean and polished" scale however.

Nice eye for detail Brian.

Lovely looking 'pit Brian.

The tubes in the inlets are a nice touch

Thanks for the kind words Ron and Max! As you know, it helps to know your at least not going crazy wondering if what you have done is crap or not.

I did get the fuse all sealed up along with the exhaust panels and the two forward intake lips, the lower one for the cooling and the upper cowling lip. I got these on and sanded flush, but am now sanding on the underside chin area right behind the spinner on the bottom right in front of the chin intake. Didnt quite match up with the contours of the spinner, but I have fixed that and am on my way to getting the fuse where it needs to be.

More pics soon, and cheers.

I see from Kev's airshow photos your fangs are spot on!

I also note that it appears this model doesn't have an engine, you chickening out or what???? :evil_laugh:

Seriously, you are making excellent progress and I hear the rustle of foil anytime soon!

Overall your usual terrific standards but I would have thought it would be finished by now!

Oh! BTW I have discovered a great "diversion" build to soothe my brain from all these planes.

It will be in the non lsp forum, its 1/24 scale and related to a frog!

Shwing!

Noice! I am loving the front end. The more I study the Hasegawa kit, the more I like it. I think that she might be well worth the money. You have inspired me to bring out the two old Revell kits I have been "beating" on for a few years, and check out where I left off. Jeesh there is a lot of work to be done. So, I am pulling a Brian Cauchi and working on both of them at the same time. We shall see how long my attention span holds out!

Anyway- Lovely work so far. Looking forward to the next installment!

Thanks for the kind words Thor! Yeah it is a lovely kit with only 1 exception...........the canopy and rear fuse plugs that they didn't manage to put on any real panel lines. Spent a lot of this past weekend sanding and filling chin intake and rear fuse plug seams.

Pics in just a bit............

More updates.

This past weekend was spent mostly sanding, filling, and more sanding. YUCK. But, its in integral part (to me anyway) of any really good build so it just took awhile before I was happy. Still not 100% there but this kits is a GEM, and the fit is really good actually, so im just making sure I do it justice.

Got all of the misc engine and cowl pieces that Hasegawa includes glued on. The fit is these eshaust and other panels was EXCELLENT and only took just a minor bit of finishing to bring them round to the contour of the rest of the fuse. STILL a bit more sanding work to be done here for sure, but fit is still excellent.

WIP_P40_48.jpg

Mounted, glued and weathered the rear pinched area behind the pilot. I also dipped the rear cover pieces over this area in Future and primed the gap in the fuse, but I really dint think that stuff was really photography worthy.

WIP_P40_51.jpg

JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER (again here one of my "usual's") :BANGHEAD2: :

DONT USE CA DE-BONDER WITHOUT KNOWING THE CONSEQUENCES

Got some thin CA on this side of the vertical fin and tried using de-bonder to get it off.

Lesson learned.

WIP_P40_52.jpg

Next I set in with the filling, then sanding, then filling again. This area under the spinner probably needed the most attention as it had the intersection of points lining up with the tri-sected interior of the air inlet.

WIP_P40_49.jpg

After some minor work, the contours started coming around. The fit of the spinner is great, an is just resting on here

WIP_P40_50.jpg

More sanding, then Mr Surfacer 500, then more sanding

WIP_P40_54.jpg

Finally after some Mr Surfacer 1000, more sanding I ended up with this

WIP_P40_53.jpg

I still have much more fine tuning to do on some joints but I have test fit the wings and they are great as well.

Also got most of the wiring done on the wheel wells too but more pics on those latah.........

Cheers,

Brian

Truly an artist at work... Great stuff. those inlet trumpets look great as does the cockpit weathering.

This is why I love loitering on forums, Whilst I know de bonder knackers plastic, directly proportional to how much is used, I never knew about the de bonding properties of my wifes nail varnish remover! How long will it take before she realises :wicked:

Bloody fantastic Brian! You are inspiring me to pull my P-40 from the stash.

We need to get together for a beer again sometime. I've learned a lot from your techniques! Keep up the great work!

HA! Wish I would have known! I really havnt used that stuff before. Im a quick study though so never again. The nail polish remover I use seems to not really craze the plastic too much.

A nose by any other name..would not look as sweet as a P-40's

lookin good. :goodjob:

Thanks Bill! Yeah the Has kit is a gem and I think that purty outline is fairly on. Didnt have to do toooooo much but that line from the tip of the spinner running down the bottom of the spinner, directly level with the interior of the intake I thought needed to be pretty dead on.

A littleah progresso.................

Got busy finishing off the fuselage plug joint and getting that smooth before re-scribe. With a bit O help from Mr. Surfacer himself, some sanding sticks and some time, seam went bye bye

WIP_P40_55.jpg

now very smooth and should not be seen even under thin foil

WIP_P40_56.jpg

Next up, I got to work on adding some of the wireing I have seen in some P-40 wells. This is more of an interpretation on that..........and some busy work with brass and stainless tubing.

WIP_P40_57.jpg

Got the wells secured in the wings with CA. Very nice feature here Has included a nice thick laterally strong spare in between the wells, that actually helps the wing maintain the correct dihedral and wing joint seam size.

WIP_P40_58.jpg

Got the wells painted, added some low lights, but not much, dry brushed some highlights with the same Zinc chromate green mixed with a touch of flat white, then did a bit of dry brushed weathering on the floor of the well, the topped it off with the same wash I used in the pit, ProModeller sand wash.
