How about some dings and dents?.......

I know this is going to be good. Glad to see you picked something that was a little off main-stream modeling. I am always amazed by the help a modeler can get from this forum. Looks like you have some excellent resources...

BTW, for everyone watching this build, I had the opportunity to see Brian's "Dixie Boy" in person in Jacksonville, and it is even more beautiful in person than it is in pictures! It will be difficult for Brian to match the quality of that build. But, I know the P-40 will be as good if not better! Great work Brian!

Thanks buddy!

Small progress update as Im hot and heavy into finishing the front office, so im thinking no one really wants to see a trillion pics and every single stage of painting, so here is the beginning of the process, then Ill show the results, after chipping, highlighting, weathering, washing, PE and some AM lead wire additions........

Base silver, then salt chips applied. Looks like a lot but once the salt dries you can always knock some off, which I usually do.

PE seat assembled and used instead of the cutting edge ofering, which although good, did not have the brace at the back of the base of the seat, and also had sub par Sutton harness compared to Radus offering

Next I set to work painting on the interior green...............the here you can see I have added the drop shadows/low lights. Bit hard to see in the pics, but more easily seen in person.

More pics soon.

Cheers, and thanks for lookin in on me :D

Nice start to the build , must try this salt technique some time looks interesting , I can see were going to be in for a treat! Regarding you question re the Wheel centres I'm honestly not 100% certain on that . I have seen a lot of Models finished in this scheme with natural metal disks but if you look closely at the photo of A29-28 the disk color is a lot lighter and brighter in color than it would be if it were natural metal, my thoughts would be they would be either white or Yellow the later more logical? Also on another note don't forget to paint the front of the chin Intake profile Black and continue it up under the bottom of the spinner not shown in your art work this detail is always omitted in all the other builds I've seen.

Also I would love to see the photos you have of this Aircraft.

Thanks Sean...............The only true images of that section come from the Montex art work.

So, what you saying is the whole area marked with BOTH red and blue arrows needs to be black, or JUST the area marked by the red arrow?

lol.........blue arrows you mean Sean?

One more question, so the area I marked with a red arrow, directly behind and below the spinner, remains natural metal?

Awesome..........question answered!

Will be easy to paint that, as areas like that can and have been foiled, but they can be problematic, so paint in that area is welcome. :) Thanks again Sean.

Nother update..............

Been working quite a bit on the front office. Been cutting out Radus belts, and the IP still is not photography worthy I dont believe, so heres the rest of it.

Used a combo of diluted MM black sprayed at low pressure for the lowlights/ shadow, drybrush of the same interior green lightened with MM flat white for highlights, undercoat of aluminum and salt for chipping, lead wire for misc cockpit wires, and PE with a final addition of Tamiya pigment weathering, and a wash of ProModeller Sand wash.

I also used Future over the instrument dials on the cockpit floor, and faded the headrest a bit from top to bottom, and dry rubbed the cockpit floor rudder channels to simulate the pilots foot wear, before weathering both with sand wash as well.

Wasnt happy with the Eduard PE throttle quadrant either, so that is a scratched piece with extra PE for throttle lever and a piece of led wire for the actual throttle grip.

Cut out the tiny maps and flight plans from internet pics printed out on my PC double-sided, then folded to match the size of the Eduard PM map holder.

The Idea/look I was going for was a really dusty, dirty, heavily used cockpit at its peak of operational use in Australia.

100% accurate? I'm sure not, but but I like it anyway, hope you do too.

It looks great in those big ol' digital pics, so it has to look fearsomely good in person. I especially like the right cockpit panel.

Thanks very much, very kind of you to say Automaton

Im not sure its fearsomely good, in person, but you are correct, it looks way better in person than in the (fairly) huge digy pics. To tell you the truth, I never planned any of those pics to be so big, but I was re-sizing cause it seemed I coulndt see any of the detail I worked to get.

Looks as if I went a bit in the opposite direction. Etiher way thanks for the kind words.

I must say I've been looking forward to seeing the results of the salt technique (never seen it before  ) and ... I'm stunned! It looks amazing.

I like your heavy weathering too. It has some charm. The seat looks simply real. Great work, Brian!!!

I'm sure there is more in store in this build thread
