Derek B Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Really cool Brian (I have an Airfix 1/24 Spitfire Mk.Vc awaiting similar tratment at some future point in time). Cheers Derek
Out2gtcha Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 Really cool Brian (I have an Airfix 1/24 Spitfire Mk.Vc awaiting similar treatment at some future point in time). Cheers Derek Thanks Derek. Ive just got done putting a coat of aluminum on the front office parts and applied some water and then chunky ground sea salt in strategic places. I always manage to take/knock off some salt to scale the chipping back to a realistic amount. In the war weary RAAF P-40s Ive seen some of the cockpits were pretty weathered.............even the previous pic of a current P-40 has quite a "lived in" look. Cheers, Brian
Tallyho Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Brian, looks like fun project to watch. Are you familiar with 'Red Roo', a company in Austrailia? I did a P-51 to promote some of their products here on LSP. Anyway, luck be with you on this P-40. Fred

Cheers, Brian I look forward to seeing how your 'salt chipping' works out! What I really meant to say about my Airfix 1/24 Spitfire Vc is that it will be completed as a NMF RAAF aircraft, so your build should be pretty inspirational to me. Cheers Derek
Out2gtcha Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 Ah yes the NM............AKA Foil stage..............I cant wait to get there but tis gonna be awhile, knowing my build speed.............. I love doing up cockpits so Im at a comfy stage atm. I think from the pics Ive seen some of the RAAF birds got dusty. Im not going to make mine over the top weathered as Im not a huge fan of that look but since this one is going to be foiled, there isnt much chipping peeling ect ect that can happen for weathering, just mainly dirt and dust and grease/oil marks. Cheers, Brian
Butler Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Cool, i loved your P51 but can't wait to see a proper dirty plane with the foil treatment
Out2gtcha Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 Cool, i loved your P51 but can't wait to see a proper dirty plane with the foil treatment Thanks Butler! Loved your Hellcat and your Mossie looks like gem (but a SH!T load of work!). Yeah thats a main reason I chose this P-40 for my next project; fairly easy kit to build, and I can use foil techniques on it . AND since this particular bird was used as an operational training bird, in the last few years of the war, I can weather the crap out of it. Most of the pics Ive seen show the interior green pretty messed up and chippy, as well as the cockpits in general pretty grimy, or in this case sandy/dirty..........and again since this was a well used training bird, Im sure it got at least as much abuse as any other bird, and most likely MORE abuse, and weathering. Ive got the pit parts painted shadowed/highlighted and chipped up. Ill try to get some pics up in the next few days once I get the PE parts on and things nice and sandy weathered. Cheers, Brian
camelhead Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Looking forward to watching this build very closely being a 2 OTU bird and very close to my heart!! I have several retrieved components off this actual aircraft. The all natural metal aircraft that served here (Mildura) late war were paint stripped here on base and all photos I have show them to be reasonably clean as they did receive constant maintenance, I guess a little poetic license could be called for here though. Sean Awesome..........thanks Sean. Ill take any and every bit of documentation I can get verbal or otherwise. Got any pics? Id love to see some. Im not going to far on the weathering on the outside as mainly with the foil it would be only a sandy wash and a tiny bit of weathering round the usual places but nothing major. Im going the weathered route more in the front office..........seat, rudder troughs and other places.................mainly cause i wanted to try out the salt technique in the cockpit. Mine may just be more weathered than the actual ones were during operations.........or maybe Im just reproducing the birds at a later stage of neglect. Either way, Im having fun on this one so far weathering the hell out of certain parts, so yeah, as you said, we can just chalk it up to a bit of artistic license. camelhead Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 (edited) Aircraft sitting centre of photo (nose facing camera) is the aircraft in question P40E A29-28 CD-A. Photo was taken here at 2 Operational Training Unit Mildura. Note the condition of the P40 in the foreground and the camoflaged color schemes of the aircraft in the background, this tells me the photo was taken around 1944 when all P40's were being stripped of their Camoflaged schemes to natural metal finishes . I'll dig around and see what else I can come up with, Would you like other pics of P40's which served here? I'm currently just putting the finishing touches to one of about 15 Hasegawa builds I'm doing for the 2OTU museum here, A29-82 an early P40E. This aircraft was the first P40 to touch down on Mildura soil when 2otu was constructed in May 1942. Sean Edited February 23, 2011 by camelhead

nmayhew Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 nice one keeping the aftermarket industry alive and well - that's what we like to see!
Out2gtcha Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 Thanks Nick! Sean, Would you happen to know for sure what color the wheel covers were on the 2n OT birds after they were stripped and put in their natural metal finishes? I have pics of most everything, but cant seem to find any pics that show what color they are...... Brian

How about some dings and dents?....... I know this is going to be good. Glad to see you picked something that was a little off main-stream modeling. I am always amazed by the help a modeler can get from this forum. Looks like you have some excellent resources... BTW, for everyone watching this build, I had the opportunity to see Brian's "Dixie Boy" in person in Jacksonville, and it is even more beautiful in person than it is in pictures! It will be difficult for Brian to match the quality of that build. But, I know the P-40 will be as good if not better! Great work Brian! Ken Friend
