i have a resin nose and the G-Factor gear Lothar (R.I.P. buddy) once gave me. Alain (thanx again) will send me some leftovers from an Italeri kit (tub, clearparts, etc.).
I ordered a seat and the spanish Expal bombs from Aztec models.

Here are the next pieces that have come off of the printer.

I have completed the rear fuselage and am working on the engine pods.

Different colors on the prints as I changed filament spools. The head of the model has been sanded vigorously. The print lines from the FDM printer were very prominent. It also has a coat of primer, or 2. White squares are small patches of white sheet plastic added to replicate the details seen from several sources. I have added a few white pipes with many more to follow. As I researched Y wings I think I can honestly say that no 2 are exactly alike. Detail differences abound and paint work is quite varied.
Several collectors are in pursuit of the perfect movie model. This will not be one of those.

The method that the designer used for the long "T" connectors was practical for ease of printing but not for construction.  I have replaced them with Evergreen T shaped rails.

A closeup view of the engine pod shows many unacceptable print lines. I may need to find a way to print the engines on my resin printer. Stay tuned.

Although the basic Y wing file was only $25, many areas lack sufficient detail for such a large scale model. Luckily you can purchase detail parts to add to your model. I have looked at nearly a dozen of these detail packages. Most are in the $20 range. You can easily get lost in the weeds purchasing all of these parts. Perhaps this is the designers game plan. Purchase the basic kit for $25 and end up spending over $200 in detail parts. Not gonna work with me. I will design and print out whatever extra parts that I need.

Here she is, done! Thanks for the research support I've received for the build, especially from Jari.

I seem to have lost my photographic skills, most of the pics are overexposed, in some the model appears a lot more patchy than she really is.

I am really pleased with the way the hinge mechanism turned out, thanks again Severin.
Here and there I used old-school detailing techniques, e.g. the fuel dump was done by squashing some brass tube in a vice to get the oval shape, then sawn off to correct length and worked into the trailing edge. Those Eduard photo-etch stencil masks are gems.

Don't pay too much attention to the base, it's somewhat temporary since the end-game is to have this and an A-6B stand on a large Coral Sea base.

After a rather lengthy contemplation, something finally happened!

It's the bas-relief effort that many kit manufacturers apply to detail that clearly doesn't resonate with me. Even though it can be enhanced with clever paintwork and washes, it still lacks depth. So, I decided to make one particular portion of the wheel well deeper - the bit that sits right up against the fuselage. This section is characterised by ribs, cables and what looks like a drive shaft of sorts. Here is the kit part that was cut out, and the ribs and longerons that will replace the kit's shallow representation.

I then added some deeper sides to the well and glued on a flat styrene roof. Doesn't look like much from this side, but it actually adds an amazing amount of depth.

Once the replacement structure is in place, the whole 3-D effect comes to life. You will notice that I also cut shaped ribs to add to the flat 'ribs' that are in the kit. Many of them are doubled-up on the actual aircraft.

With the added structure in place, it was time to add as much plumbing as I felt I could, without being silly. The real aircraft is actually full of pipes and wires, but much of it is tucked away under a lip, that doesn't exist on the kit (and I certainly wasn't going to rebuild the entire well ). I have attempted to incorporate the kit's plumbing by starting and ending runs at the same points as the kit does.

Since the wells were so easily accessible at this point, I figured it was a good time to work on the main gear legs. I have mentioned before that the kit mouldings are very thin towards the bottom, where the wheel attaches. Having bought cast metal legs, I reckoned the problem was sorted. I'm not terribly keen on the shabby look of the metal casting however (which is just the kit part made worse, but stronger). So I thought at any rate. No problem, out came the metal file and sand paper strips, and I set about neatening up the metal leg. After some filing and pulling strips of sandpaper over to oleo to get it to shine beautifully, I discovered that the uneven heating of the metal had curled up the leg like a shrimp chip in hot oil!

I quickly straightened it out while it was still warm, but the muffled creaking sounds it made in the process make me think that my cleaning efforts have possibly compromised the metal's strength? Not wanting to push and prod too much, I decided to look at a way of strengthening the original kit legs.

Here is the cleaned (and mostly straightened) leg to compare with the casting straight from the box.

The kit leg got chopped up and cleaned back to basic shapes. Metal rods have been shoved in wherever possible and a strip of flat brass on the thin lower part of the leg will hopefully do the trick - otherwise the aircraft is going onto jacks - which might even be appropriate as you'll see by the end of the story! At least the Reskit wheel looks great...

The retraction/extension piston also got some metal added, for strength, and to get the arm length correct. It all looks rather nice, upside down, with no weight on it!

Almost time to contemplate the next step - the engine intakes!

    Cheers,

    Sean

I'm thinking it'll be fine after a polish, gloss, decals, satin and, weathering. as well, the camera and the monitor seem to have altered the actual colors from true view
aaannnddd.....after several hours cutting 6 to 8 mm squares from Tamiya tape to mask all the corners and touching up all the paint creep from the original masks (ok it doesn,t look much different really) I'm ready to continue adding the bigger airplane shaped parts and continue building

    work continues

Painting/ masking, painting, masking painting and removing masks...the inevitable need for touch up work next

The vinyl masks don't lend themselves very well to compound curves and sharp protrusions. As well, I must have screwed up in placing said masks at or near the back of the cockpit opening as I have 2 masks left over that the instructions indicate should be placed near the right rear of the cockpit and down the side to the wing root extension...I haven't built a perfect model yet, why start now.
I will probably spend the next few days cutting and placing small squares of Tamiya tape and fixing all my paint mishaps then, more assembly a wet sand and gloss coat for decals.
I used a couple of different modellers sites for information on mixing the Tamiya colors I use to obtain the camouflage(?)  colors but in all honesty I don't think they look right, I can live with it...but it seems off to my eye. Wait a minute.......(the lighting in my hobby room and camera could be to blame...looking over my shoulder at the model instead of these images it looks much better) And now since the masks were completely destroyed during removal I will have no choice but to live with it
    The fun continues.
    Thanks for looking

Hi Everyone!  These are the final photos taken of my recent completion from the Aces High group build hosted by LSP.  The kit itself was sold to me by a fellow LSP'er and I'm glad to get it done.  Yet these aren't the pictures I wanted.  These are pictures saved from the recycle bin.  I wanted pics with perfect lighting taken perfectly.  Alas, the perfect lighting didn't present itself, and the model itself suffered a gravity related catastrophe and awaits repair.  There are a lot of pics.   I hope you like them.

Masking and some painting underway (friction fitted the one vertical stab) I may have some form of dyslexia or be handicapped in same way because I'm having a hard time sorting out the shapes for the masks (often fitting the negative of the one needed (old age?)
In any case, if it wasn't for the pics Martinnfb had attached earlier I'd most likely be nowhere near this point as yet. I've got a coat of mid gray primer on and a dark bluish gray for the FS 25042....This is the first of 4 colors
I've wired digital instrumentation that was easier to do!

I picked a bad day to stop sniffing glue, doing cocaine, smoking, drinking....
