Masters of the Air - Trailer

It's out, maybe it's already been posted here, I did a quick look-around and didn't see anything. Apologies if already discussed.

Obviously hard to get a feel for what the series will be like from a 2-minute trailer but I'm really hoping they didn't try to cram multiple, competing stories into this series.   One of the things that made Band of Brothers so amazing was it stayed with one small unit for the entire series, instead of bouncing around from sub-plot to sub-plot.

I have not used an Apple product by choice since the Apple II+, and I'm not going to start spending money on their junk now!

Remember when they were all bashing Kitty Hawk Models (Shitty Hawk for the savvy) only to whine some years later for them to return?

If you hate Apple (or anything else) so much, why would you care about what they’re releasing? Just move on and watch something else.

There does seem to be a lot going on in the trailer. Did the Tuskegee Airmen fly with the 8th?

I was pretty sure they flew in Italy and had very little / nothing to do with supporting the 8th.    They have an amazing story but the more sub-plots you cram into a limited series like this, the more you dilute the core story (assuming there is one).

I have disdain for their products and marketing. I don't hate them. I did hate trying to support their terrible computers(don't believe it, look up Louis Rossman on youtube)I have no idea what you're talking about with the Kitty Hawk stuff. I want to see it because the subject material is interesting.  If they do not do a wider release, I will skip it.

That was my take as well, and as much as their story is amazing, seems like it shouldn't be in a mini-series about the 8th.

Also, was there a single real airplane in the trailer, or was it all CGI?

I've been following along the updates and production for Masters of the Air since it was announced over a decade ago(!) and wanted to drop a few lines here to provide some clarity:

There were a few real aircraft used in the production of the set, yes. This included a brief stint of Sally B at their makeshift airfield at Abingdon, as well as a P-51D. They used several other B-17's for sound production, and used several other B-17 sections for use in a studio for filming in front of a green screen. This included the Cockpit Project's B-17 cockpit section, which is the most complete, accurate B-17 cockpit section around. For those on Facebook, you may be able to look at this link to see what I'm talking about. If not, you can find it on Cary Fukunaga's Instagram:

Two full-scale B-17F replicas were built for the series as well, complete with "working" engines and motors that would allow them to taxi under their own power around the makeshift airfield. These bore the markings of several different aircraft for filming, and were adjusted accordingly with battle damage, markings variants, etc during the filming process. One of the gripes I do have, is that they simply painted them silver to depict B-17G's, and it's yet to be seen if they will accurately depict chin turrets and the right cheek guns on them using CGI. From the trailer, I can tell they did not make adjustments to the waist windows (the B-17G's in the trailer have B-17F style waist windows that are closed), and all of the silver B-17G's depicted in the trailer have the stinger-style tail gun. If this is my only major accuracy gripe for the series, I'll be pretty happy. The B-17F replicas, however, were done quite well and really are pretty impressive:

The 332nd Fighter Group (Tuskegee Airmen) did not escort the 100th BG at any point during World War II. The 332nd escorted the 15th Air Force in the Mediterranean campaign. However, several 332nd FG airmen were interred in POW camps and some ended up at Stalag Luft 3 along with several notable members of the 100th BG, so this is likely were the story arc comes from. Their presence in this series has ruffled some feathers, as they are only mentioned on 1 page of Donald Miller's Masters of the Air book. However, you can make the argument that "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" were both based off of several books, so they likely referenced another book for the inclusion/story arc of the 332nd pilots into this series. You can also argue that the Tuskegee Airmen are a popular and important story to tell about the air war in Europe, and the two movies dedicated to them thus far haven't been entirely good historical drama. This is a chance for Spielberg and Hanks to provide, even if for an episode or two, some decent recognition for their service during World War II.

I, for one, have been very excited for this series for a long time. I look forward to discussing it more with everyone here once it releases and we get a chance to see it in full-length episodes, not the entire 10-episode series rolled into a 1 minute and 15 second trailer. We'll get so much more to discuss here starting in a few months. I've purchased the entire seat, but I'm only going to need the front edge of it. My palms are sweaty in anticipation already.

Whatever this series turns out to be, I can only recommend Donald L Miller's book of the same name.

The book was incredible, and in my top ten aviation reads.

Originally the series was intended to be adapted from The Wild Blue by Stephen E. Ambrose (of the Band of Brothers and The Pacific fame) and would have involved B-24 Liberator crews over Germany.
Just imagine what we have missed!:piliot:

Because it's very possible to like the content and dislike the carrier/streaming service/company it's on.

If it comes out somewhere else I'll gladly watch it.

I don't automatically associate any specific release with a specific streamer, so I personally would enjoy seeing this content, Im just not going to have anything to do with the company they happen to choose to stream it on initially.
