Dullcoate Replacement

I have been using Winsor &Newton Galeria Acrylic Mediums, satin or flat, thinned with Tamiya X20a. I really like the satin because it seems more realistic in most applications. But if you are seeking a totally dead flat finish, this products delivers it.

i use Alclad clear coats, i have 4 or 5 of their sheen, love the strait out of the bottle and the available sheens

I'm currently working on a 72nd scale EP-3E. I wanted a semi-gloss finish on her so I did some tests on some spoons sprayed with Model Master Classic White and Gloss Gull Gray, the same as what's on the model. I used Alclad Gloss Klear Kote ( ALC-310 ) first followed by Alclad Klear Kote Light Sheen. Two coats of each were applied to the spoon, worked great, no reaction, dried fine. Decaled the model and sealed them in with two coats of ALC-311 ( the white and gray were on the model for almost a year ), back on 9/8/24. The model is still tacky in spots :angry2:. Very disappointed with these results.

It's not tacky where the decals are. Needless to say I won't be using the ALC-311 for my finish coat. I got this to do a test with. I wish Testor's had made a semi-gloss clear.

I’ve had the same issues with the Alcad clears: tacky after months. Will no longer use them.
Not a fan of rattle cans, but I’ll give the Mr Hobby clears a try.
Anyone try the Vallejo or Ammo clears?

The only reason I'm trying this is because I need a semi-gloss finish on my 72nd scale EP-3E that won't turn the white yellow. I shy away from white/gray builds just for that reason. I've "tested" the Mr. Hobby and it worked great, did not turn the white yellow, excellent finish when dried and, I put some Tamiya tape on it, did some painting and removed the tape with no issues. These cans have the better nozzles on them, they spray really nice.

Once I get back to my low-viz builds it will be back to my usual of Testor's "wet look" clear gloss and Testor's Dull Cote, both de-canted and sprayed thru my airbrush.
