hworth18 reacted to Juggernut in If Anyone in the USA is Looking For a Tamiya Spitfire MK VIII For a Good Price....
Tamiya USA has the kit for $99, free shipping (but you have to pay your state sales tax). See here. I've known this for a long time but just ordered myself one a couple days ago. I thought others might be of similar thought hence this post.

It's not really nose art, it's more of an attention getter. An obvious distinction from other a/c or squadron.
No proof of either so a perfect excuse to break out your artistic license.
Here , in case you don't already have one ...

Very nice! Such parts could be useful in 1/32 scale as well!

Here is a pic of the starboard side of T6+AN, which is the Stuka in the Montex decal set.

hworth18 got a reaction from Erwin in Airfix 1:24 Stuka
I just found out that T6+AN did NOT have the snake painted on the starboard side. There are pics of this aircraft if you Google "Snake Stuka" that does not have the snake painted on the opposite side. Now, IMHO, it looks funny to me with the snake on one side, but that's a matter for the builder to decide. Sorry, I can't post the pic from my office laptop. My Stuka would have the snake on both sides regardless.
Multiple Stukas in this squadron had the Snake. There are quite a few pics of different Stukas with different codes with the same snake scheme.

hworth18 reacted to ChuckD in Tamiya A6M2 Zero - No. 3 Kokutai at Rabaul
Hello, all. After ripping through the A-20G in no time flat, I wanted to keep up my momentum... aaaaand, I've been wanting to clear out some of the backlog of kits on my shelf of doom. So, down came this build. I did the cockpit and fuselage probably 2 years ago and it just sat and sat and sat. Every time I'd get it off the shelf, I'd look at those dumb little workable gear legs and gear doors and just nope it right back onto the shelf. This time, I swore I would finish it. Before I start anything new, I'm going to clear out at least 3-5 off the half built kits on the shelf, so here we are.
If I ever do this kit again, I'll ignore any and all of the workable toy crap. It just complicates the build and brings no real value if you're doing a static model as I was. Outside of that issue, it was pretty typical Tamiya quality and was generally a decent build. Paints are generally Tamiya, but a custom mix to get it closer to what my eyes see. Cowling is MRP and, aside from an aftermarket seat belt (I no longer recall the manufacturer), it's 100% out of the box.
This model represents aircraft X-182 of the No. 3 Kokutai when photographed at Lakunai Airdrome in Rabaul around October of 1942. Previous identity markings were crudely painted over in the field and the new markings added. It had previously been flown by chutaicho Lieutenant Miyano Zenjiro before he left the unit in April of 1942. The fate of this aircraft is unknown. Photo and description all come from Michael Claringbould's Pacific Profiles Vol V. If you're looking for inspiration on a build, they're a fantastic and informative resource.
Hope you enjoy!

It looks great to me. The Kate has a huge wingspan, so a smaller scale will be welcome for those like me that have limited display space.

hworth18 reacted to bfwaechter in Question Concerning Trumpeter TBF-1C Avenger Kit
I jumped ahead in the instructions and put the turret's rotating base plate in place, taped the fuselage halves together, then tried to fit the clear turret into place. It went down and onto the base plate fine. I am going to proceed ahead and not install it per Step 25 before assembling the fuselage. I may not apply glue to about 1/4" of the fuselage spine behind the turret so I can spread it apart if necessary so I will have a bit of wiggle room. Once the turret is installed at the finish of the build, I'll apply a tiny bit of liquid glue to seal the fuselage halves and touch up the paint as necessary.
Thanks for everyone's comments thus far.

hworth18 reacted to tomprobert in Pure nostalgia - Airfix 1/24 Me-109E
Evening folks,
With the summer holidays here, there's been some welcome additional modelling time and this was finished off over the weekend. I was given this by my dad who had in turn been given it by an old family friend - I think it is an original issue, and if not it's a very early issue of this classic kit from Airfix:
I just wanted to build this more or less as it comes and enjoy it. However, I couldn't let the gaping hollow wheel bays pass so made some simple mods by adding plastic card sidewalls and some Evergreen stiffeners to at least make them sort of passable:
Other than that, I used some Eduard belts for the pilot's seat, Barracuda wheels as the kit's had dried out and cracked when I tried to apply them to the hubs, and some aftermarket decals from Techmod to represent Von Werra's machine who crash-landed not far from me in Marden, Kent - and became 'the one that got away'. Although old and basic by modern standards, this kit is a joy and went together pretty well. Surface detail is sublime and the super-detailer could really have a field day if they were so inclined. I really enjoyed it as nostalgic build from days gone by and that's what it's all about!
Evolution: here is the 109E alongside the G-model: like the Spitfire the basic airframe had huge potential to evolve and did so as the war progressed:
Paints were all Xtracolor enamels with some weathering using Mig-Ammo pastels. A really enjoyable build - don't overlook these oldies as they scrub up really well!
All the best,
Tom
