OK - more randomness from me - and it's been a while - but a good friend, and member of this parish, has been looking at 1:200 ship models - which, in turn, has pointed out that I really ought to post a progress post on my lack of progress on the kit...

Actually - I had mentioned, back in the mists of time, that I was trying to sort out the space to build and photograph the Hood as I (hopefully) start to make progress.

As some will know - I now have 'studio space' courtesy of my employers and the exchange of a small(ish) amount of cash from my salary each month - so the excuses are disappearing fast!

So - photography - and excuse the mobile phone pix - I don't have a DSLR with me today:

I also have black and coloured backdrop sheets - but I need to find something that doesn't crease - and gives an even black I think...

Model in the photo above is a 1:32 Spitfire for a sense of scale...

Big enough for Hood (with proper camera anyway):

And someone was asking about mounting finials - these are brass lamp fittings from Ebay at about £3 each - used succesfully the other year when I built a 1:400 Titanic for a friends son.

Now looking at suppliers of clear cases...

Stay tuned, or not - but I will make a proper start soon!

Indeed - makes perfect sense to do them this way for 1:72/48 - and I didn't expect him to make any concessions/add detail specifically for 1:32 - but it does look like he's been pulling out all the stops for us in terms of detail and structures!

Am expecting to have to do a lot of surface prep and scratch-building - but it looks like it's going to be a wonderful canvass.

Thanks again for approaching Toshihiko about this - really looking forward to getting my hands on one...

Notice he's done the flap stiffeners as a box section, rather than triangular - but, I suspect, for our purposes they can be sanded off and replaced...

    yeah, pretty exciting Iain!

I noticed a few details like that too.  probably I thought because the kit was designed for 1/72 and 1/48?  Nothing that cant be fixed

So, on Day 3 of 'let's just build a model for once':

Cockpit tub base paint done - ready for detail painting and weathering:

And main wheel wells given a dark detail wash, fitted to lower wings, and wings assembled:

And I couldn't resist dry fitting one of those ace tip tanks:

Working on the rudder and elevators that I'd removed from the fuselage and tailplane mouldings before assembling.

Edges trued up with my trusty T Bar and some 400 grit wet and dry, before adding strips of styrene to make new edges.

These have been blended in and the edges rounded - now filing out the slots where the hinges will go:

I have (of course) the same problem re the position of the windshied. I plan to move the windshield rearward
just a tad to fit the flat plate in front without going past the panel line. My canopy will be open so I'm not so
concerned with things lining up perfectly.
Re the Rotol blades, they look nearly perfect to me but the spinner is noticeably off to me. I'm using one from
the old Revell Spitfire MkI/II (5516) as it's the best I've seen. Can't tell about the Eagle parts spinner cuz they
don't show the part in profile (GMF does the same thing  ).

I'm really bad at completing Group Builds - and at the moment very bad at finishing anything - but...

Trying to get MoJo restored I figured a straight out of the box (maybe with a few minor tweaks) might be good 'therapy' and, from what I've seen/read the Hobbyboss F-84 kits are pretty straightforward builds.

So, I'm in with this - don't expect anything amazing - and final scheme to be decided:

I also have the F-84E boxing - so can swap the speed brakes to fix the errors in the respective kits where the styles have been transposed.

Last F-84 I built was the Heller 1:72 kit - back in the early '80s - and I really enjoyed that one...

    Have fun!

If I recall correctly there was a lot of tweaking done to the windshield at prototype stage - and the installation on the Hurricane always looked odd/scabbed on IMHO!

I've studied lots and lots of images re. height of the kit part  - simply because, as moulded, the screen sits quite a bit higher than the sliding portion when closed - even allowing for squeezing in at the front (converging rails as Alain mentioned earlier).

Goes without saying - the two elements should line up at the top when closed.

I then looked at a number of previous builds of this kit and the screen looked too high.

So - took decision to reduce height to match sliding portion - a decision I stand by!

Yes - the base of the screen now needs modding/additions made with regards to the base framing - and the position of the upper horizontal frames - but I'm happy it will come good.

Everything in modelling has to be a compromise - the trick is fooling the eye of the viewer!

It's going to be a Coastal  Command Mossie in the field applied Extra Dark Sea Grey over Sky.   More than likely a 333 (Norwegian) Squadron aircraft.   333 Squadron often flew as "outriders" to scout and protect the main strike force.   As such they apparently didn't have rockets installed, which is good because no one offers the Coastal Command-specific RP setup.   Only items these aircraft had mounted were 100-gal slipper tanks. See the link below for my options.  Kind of leaning towards "F-3".

    https://www.ultracast.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=AOD32033

Another potential option is "VV-A", seen below on the decal sheet and further below after making an emergency landing in Sweden after being shot up on a mission.  It appears that VV-A also was not fitted with RP's, just the 100-gal slipper tanks.

We'll see how it goes.   Also, please note that,  as with my F-51D project, I have no doubt that within a month or so of completing this build, Tamiya will be announcing a new Coastal Command Mosquito.

Thanks all. Hopefully it stays together and I don't mess up the end of the build. I don't consider weathering a strong point of mine.

Wash is done, with some possible touch up here and there (thanks big photos). Overall, I think it's coming together well. I'll do some chipping (aluminum on a sponge) and then probably seal it with a flat/semi flat coat before salt weathering commences. More to come......darn 5 days a week working slows me down!
