Hopefully I’ll have time to work on this thing in between juggling work and family. I’m thinking Barracuda’s decals for Double Trouble Two or Alabama Rammer Jammer.

After a quite a long break from the workbench, and an even longer one from LSP kits, I really needed something to get me back to the workbench - especially since I've recently moved house, and had to set up my hobby room from scratch again. So, with seemingly limited interest in this Group Build so far, I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring and get something built. That something is Hasegawa's venerable and much eclipsed P-51D Mustang kit.

But why this kit, when there are so many better Mustang kits available now? Well, I figured I could build this one relatively quickly, pretty close to OOB, and finally get some runs on the board, so to speak. It was also among a box of kits gifted to me by a friend, so there's that, too. And I have a thing for these old kits anyway.

My initial idea of not using any aftermarket and going for the quickest build possible was soon (and inevitably) dashed when I discovered another long forgotten kit in the stash:

Despite the newer box, this is actually a builder's kit sent to me by our own dodgem37 some years back. Mark had done some really impressive scratch-building in the cockpit and interior, but gave up on it when the Tamiya kit was released. But the relevant bit for my purposes here is that he also included in the box a raft of aftermarket sets and parts that he'd collected for the build, including a Grand Phoenix cockpit! So, I'm going to be raiding those sets for this build, and perhaps at some point in the future I'll honour Mark's gift (and work) by finishing his kit off too.

Apologies for the long-winded opening post, and with no modelling either! I don't plan to rescribe this one or do anything about the wheel bays at this point, so hopefully the build itself won't be so long-winded. I haven't yet decided on a scheme either, but given the nature of the kit, I'm planning to shy away from natural metal, and go with a painted finish.

    Let's see how I go!

Bringing back this long dead build.   From my last post 3 years ago, I mentioned that I wanted to replicate the "mix and match" colored ammo bay covers that were present on many (nearly all?) late war carrier-deployed Corsairs.   Finally got around to it.   As always, the Fundekals decals went down perfectly.   I couldn't do as much as I'd like, given how difficult it was to place these with the wings folded.   Too much of a risk that I'd break something. Regardless, I was able to put down enough to accomplish the look I was shooting for.  Sorry for the out of focus pictures.  My camera had a tough time focusing on the wing.

For due to the lack of insignia on the right wing, most of the covers were standard GSB.

Left wing has more going on, including a single panel still wearing a color from the older 3-color paint scheme.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's it for updates on this model, thanks again for looking!

I don't model the regime, I model the aircraft. If we were to offer multiple options from all of the allied and axis countries, invariably my top five picks would be German, not because of any political or philosophical ideology, but because they're just so cool. Same with armor, offer me tons of options, and with the exception of a couple of choice Russian subjects, the overwhelming majority of my choices would be German.

Appreciate that Granger and welcome to Colorado. I've been in the Parker area for a few years, though originally from North Carolina. I just recently heard about the National WW2 Aviation Museum. I plan to make a trip there soon. Very much enjoy the Springs. Actually headed down there Saturday for a precision rifle match.

This looks great! Very nice birdcage, and thank you very much for showing everyone pictures of your great uncle! Boyington was one of my childhood heroes and I’ve always had a soft spot for VMF-214.
Incidentally, I see that you are from Colorado.  I am a travel nurse and was doing a contract here in Colorado Springs a couple of months ago, and liked it so much here that I decided to move my daughters here with me. I’ve been to the National Museum of World War II Aviation, and plan on seeing if they would like for me to donate some of my built models, including a 1/32 birdcage Corsair modeled after one Boyington is known to have flown.

    Hi Chris,

This is only correct if you paint them! Personally I prefer using a metal burnishing fluid. This change the brass metal color to a kind of gun metal hue. To me, this gives a better finish than any paint as this looks like Parkerized metal.

So, a hearty get well Bert from all of us here at LSP. I'm sure he would appreciate whatever support and encouragement we can provide him.

...So I had to wait a few days waiting for some parts to arrive for my 109D. I saw my old PCM Mc200
on the SOD and thot "why not jump on that just for kicks ? " Since then the parts I was waiting for
have arrived but I'm gonna finish this first.
So let's pretend I just started this WIP (I think I started this back in 2008/9  )
First some pix of the kit ...

This is about as far as I got when it was shelved ...

    Here's where I was about a week ago ...

First, mottled on some WEM verde mimetico 2 ...

Since enamels take so Loooong to dry, I waited overnight to finish the green ...

...then the giallo minetico 4 (yellow) splotches ...

...then the bruno mimetico (brown) splotches ...

No grigio mimetico on the underside yet , I had to slap some decals on ...

... I went over the whole thing with a very fine abrasive sponge under warm tap water and leveled the sufaces the
best I could and put the upper wing insignia on.

I'll be applying a semi gloss overcoat (more semi than gloss) , some moderate weathering ahead.
All the paints are WEM enamels except the yellow which is Humbrol yellow 154 and the cockpit
interior on which I used Lifecolor  years ago.   I've been havin' a blast gettin' this much done in a
relatively short time (I'm not used to that ).    Stay tuned sports fans

Very generous of you but I'm going to test a few options prior to resorting to the HAD BuNos.  First, I'll see if the Tamiya decals are usable and if not, take a stab at constructing the BuNos from the Furball individual numerals.

The two hex-shapes on the rudder beneath the 00 are on the kit so I'm assuming I'm good to go.

Yup, it's me.  Thunnus here and JKim pretty much everywhere else.  Keeping an eye on your 262!

Trying something new with this one.  From a size perspective, I think it exceeds most of my 1/32 scale subjects.

Fishing this Saturday was a lot of fun.  Tiring but fun.  The three of us managed to catch and release 139 largemouth bass, two bullheads and one bullfrog.  Quality was very good and I managed to catch five between 4-5 pounds.
