Troy Molitor Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Wow, I'm really not into jets but I thought I'd take a look at this tread and I'm glad I did. Fantastic paint effort here. The non-skid really is impressive. Regards, Troy
crobinsonh Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 Thanks for your comments. Got back from LA yesterday but could not sleep so got on with masking and spraying some of the little bits. Academy do provide the yellow strips for the GBU-24's but they looked horrible so I masked and sprayed. Sidewinders are the incredible models from Zactoman the GBU-24's are from Eduard and the AMRAAM's are Gutting Edge. Regards,
crobinsonh Posted July 21, 2014 Author Posted July 21, 2014 After a lot of travelling on business and a lot of deliberation on next steps I finally decided to gloss the beast. I did not want to use Future as I have had some issues with this in the past so I tried the new (to me) Alclad Klear Cote Gloss. I have to say it went on a treat and I was very impressed and did not overly affect the weathering. Next stop is applying decals and then more weathering and toning down in general. My plan is to have this beast finished by the end of this year - only 8 years after my initial purchase at Yeovilton at the last air display of the Sea Harrier.
Dave Morrissette Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Wow! Missed the start of this and I am sorry for that. Great looking build. Can't wait to see the finished product Dave
crobinsonh Posted April 3, 2015 Author Posted April 3, 2015 It has been a while but having finally beaten to death the Trumpy 1/48th F-106 I promised I would not get distracted with any more models until I finally finished this one. Not the best of shots with my iPhone but I finally have some decals on. Also using Gunze Mr Setter and Mr Mark Softer as the Academy decals seems to be pretty thick. More decaling tomorrow. Youngtiger1 Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 Nice to see you still tackling this build. I love that big Viking head on that tail. Keep up the good work Uilleann 1
geedubelyer Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 Good to see you back on this. The decals look good on my monitor.
Fooesboy Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 What a great built thread, fascinating to read your efforts to overcome the kits shortfalls and presevere over such a long time. Bravo!
crobinsonh Posted April 4, 2015 Author Posted April 4, 2015 Pretty much finished all the decals today and sprayed as many stencils as possible (so much nicer than decals) as well as the blue for the top of the fins. Masking for the blue on the top of the fins. and the unveiling. Placing the stencils from Eduard ready for spraying. More Eduard stencils. I have to say (not that I am greatly experienced) but I found the Academy decals to be really thick. Needed either a good dip in future and/or Mr Mark Softer to get them to snuggle down. Even then you can clearly see the "edges" as they are so thick. Much more so that the Fisher decals on the Sea Fury or the MDC decals on the Typhoon. Any one else had this experience with Academy? Keep up the good work Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I started 2015 with a resolution to finish some models that I had started and placed in the boneyard - I chose the Trumpy F-106 and the Academy Hornet (by far the nicest model of the two). My target is to have this complete in the next 2 weeks. Youngtiger1 1
crobinsonh Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 Continued with some progress on the Hornet. I noticed on a number of photographs the various boot marks left on the airframe. We have seen this to a degree on our Buccaneers - but as they are out of service and only ran 4-5 times a year it is nowhere as intense as on the Navy Hornets that are in service and have gone to war. So I decided that I would try and replicate this feature using a resin boot and some oil paints. First attempt - too dark as I realised later. For the second attempt I removed most of my first attempt and then used different, lighter colours. I am much happier with this and I know that some of the contrast will get knocked back with the matt varnish to come. I will leave it overnight and see whether it is too much. crobinsonh Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) Bits N Bobs. Getting closer to having her on her feet soon. All weathered and ready for fitting. U/C ready to be fitted next. Still debating whether to add more detail here. Lots of bits - note the piece of Eduard etch that needs re-glueing on the canopy. The engine exhausts - too small for the F-18 but hey hum they will have to do now. Edited April 15, 2015 by crobinsonh andromeda673 and geedubelyer 2
