Salient question time: is it pronounced Groo-man (as in groom) or Grumman (as in duh).
I've always assumed the latter, but recently heard the former and it occurred to me I don't actually know for sure.
There wasn't a lot of US Navy traffic around RAF Wyton in the 1980s even though an odd Tomcat, Tracker or two would have been very welcome.

Usual well detailed build Chuck, although it's not convincing me to move up to 1/24 scale, even with the new Airfix Spitfire due.
(Though I might if in the impossibly unlikely event they ever did a B-I-G Phantom).

I think anything with a prominent nose intake confuses some people.

I recall a story about a Lightning intercept of a Tu-95 or somesuch somewhere far out over the North Sea. The Lightning pilot was running low on fuel and was unable to find his tanker. The Tu-95 radioed the pilot of the 'English MiG' and vectored  him in the right direction. I can't recall the exact details, but I'm guessing it occurred sometime in the Gorbachev era. 'English MiG' always struck me as an apt a description of the Lightning as you're likely to get from a foreign crewman.

Actually the J 29 cockpit is this shallow! It had to be since it's squeezed in above the intake channel.
Here is how it looked like without the seat installed when I worked in the cockpit...

However, I wonder what Fly where thinking when they put that big box on the cockpit floor for the seat to sit on...
The seat should be sitting directly on the floor.

    Hello everybody!
I've been invited to join this site by AndersN.

My name is Andreas / Rudolf_Filip121 and I live in Helsingborg, Sweden.
I work as a volunteer at the local aviation museum at former Swedish Air Force base of F 10 at Ängelholm.
A couple of years ago I spent a lot of my spare time working on our SAAB J 29F Tunnan (29575).
She was standing outside the Swedish Air Force museum at Malmköping for about 35 years.
Needless to say she wasn't in a great shape when she arrived at our museum and in my care.

She is still not in perfect condition but considering what she has been through and our limited budget she does look better now...

    Now back to topic!

I'm new to this technology. Please have patience with me.
I studying to be a 3d-printingspecialist right now after quitting my job as a salesman.
Since I have access to a decent 3d-scanner (Artec Leo), I have a resinprinter at home and keys to the museum...
... well, it would almost be dumb not to take advantage of this, right???

I have scanned the areas that I find are the troublesome parts of the Fly kit.
I must say that I'm actually impressed with the kit!
The J 29 have some very complex shapes that can easily be missed.
With some careful work this could result in a very accurate model.

The worst part that more or less screamed at me when I opened the kit was the nose.
I knew that it would be a problem since all other J 29 kits have an issue with the intake part.

The intake "hole" is 3 mm too large in diameter.
The nose is also about 1,5 mm too short.

Here is how my scan of the nose turned out.

This file was easy to start from when I designed a new nose and a new intake channel.
I did a partial print "with a shortened intake channel".

Now I have to go and see if I can make this new nose part actually fit the kit.
I expect that I have to go back and forth and make changes in the design.
So far I'm really pleased with the look.
Here is the kits nose over my version with the correct dimensions.

    Quite a size difference!

    So far so good!
I'm also working on other parts like the seat and the afterburner.
    To be continued...

For some inexplicable reason I've always liked the F1 without the 'go-faster stripe' fuselage cable fairings more than its similar pointy finned fellows.
I plan to convert an Echelon example into one as soon as a certain member here *cough* has progressed his fuselage tank to correct the Trumpeter kit sufficiently to release a copy.

    well, it's been a while

this model sat in my cabinet for the last few years missing it's canopy parts and aerials, so this week I thought I would actually finish it

first the hinged canopy panel was added to the lower cockpit - nothing complex, just some contact cement where it can't be seen

..then the side and upper panel, the upper has pins locating it into the side screen and then hinge parts and a little extension lock were added to the front..

..and finally some aerial parts were added to the upper fuselage - here there is a white isolator with a fitting and a small post went into a pre-drilled hole to locate the aerial mast..

the fitting is a watch part with a 0.4mm hole drilled through it to accept the end of an aerial lead..

..the post aerial was made by pressing some ali tube flat along part of it's length, cutting a micro-fine slit in the end and adding a tiny PE tag with a hole in it to accept the aerial lead..

I used EZ line for the lead itself..

..this was fitted and some tiny tube painted white for the isolators before the whole thing was rigged..

..and thats it - Lopes Hope 3rd is finally completely finished

Thanks to everyone for coming along for the ride and I have posted an RFI here

This I felt was worth a separate post
A parcel arrived last night from Rick  @Spooky56 of some parts needed for my build.  Thanks mate!
Inside there were some gorgeous RAF Phantom ladders printed in 1/32 from John @xvtonker I have snapped a pic of what they look like on my Phantom and think they look amazing dont you?  These are (well the rear one) is designed for the Spey Toom and although he did them in 1/48 he kindly scaled them up to 1/32 for me....you're a legend mate and I will be forever grateful.  Included are 2 types of front one as there was a different version made that was often seen in RAFG ans also on the mainland UK and he has done the US version of the front.

They are absolutely sublime and highly recommended to anyone building an RAF Spey Toom in 1/48 (or 1/32 if making available).  Honestly I am speechless as they really are that good!

I was pretty nervous placing the rear one on as these were measured off real ones with the help again of the BPAG.  Anyway, what a relief as it sits perfectly from all angles compared to photos.  Looks like it was made exactly for my model.  This also confirmed all the effort going to get the intake the right length, width and shape has paid off!  PHEW!

Thank you John and Rick, also @Ali62i for the Brass u/c for the Revell kit he does.  I am going to see if it can be used with the Tamiya kit as they are far more accurate.

    Anyway here is a pic

    Nice aye

    Cheers Anthony

I'm OK for Sabres, but in typical fashion I waited for the price to drop a bit more on the Kingfisher, and then it was gone altogether.
Looking forward to it reappearing at some stage.

Chek got a reaction from LSP_Kevin in Printing One's own Decals, some quesitons
There are white toner cartridges for HP, Brother and Samsung printers available, and probably others.
But even if available for your model of printer, they tend to be twice the price or more of standard CYMK refills.

Another approach would be to match the olive drab tone as closely as possible to the model then print onto clear decal sheet, which would leave to design itself clear so it would need to be applied to a white patch, pre-painted on the model.

You may be able to get in close enough with an airbrush and mask to touch up the transition of the vehicle paintwork and the decal background print. You'll also likely need two layers of decal to get a reasonable colour density, and some experimentation to match your print and paint tones.
