Mark M
a friend has asked me to build them a p-38 in 1/48 (due to the price of the trumpy) however ive seen a couple of revell ones around and the cost is similar to the 1/48 versions so.... how bad is it? BiggTim
IMO, good in general shape and scale, absolutely horrible in overall detail. I say this as an owner of three of them, and 3 Trumpies, too. It works the best as a closed up flight display, because the interior, canopy, gear and bay doors are it's weakest links. It usually requires a complete fill, sand, and re-scribe job to look decent. However, if your friend isn't too picky about details, it sure looks like a big P-38 OOB! Mark M
thanks, looks like ill stick to the 1/48 then as this is ment to be a fairly quick simple build for Paul, now im off to find a half decent 'L' in 1/48 mpk and Out2gtcha
MikeC
Academy all the way, vinyl tyres notwithstanding, it beats Hasegawa by a short head. Others' MMV. Edited December 8, 2017 by MikeC Mark M
Mark M
Thanks Mike, ive taken a punt on the Acedemy AND a Hobbyboss (ill build one for myself and give him the choice) also the Kagero book for some nice Decals MikeC
Shawn M
avoid the 1/48 as there are FAR better options as mentioned. I started to build out the 1/48 and gave up. You can see how far I got here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/shawnmanny/albums/72157632102518741 Big Texan
Big Texan
I've heard the newer HobbyBoss kit isn't so bad. Academy is still the "go to" kit, while Monogram requires much patience and deft handling as Shawn M above shows in his build. But, I have heard very good things about the Hobbyboss kit in terms of fit. So, that may be the way you want to go. Mark M
Shawn M
I got the academy kit in the stash, its way better then the Revell-o-gram but still lacks in some details. Big Texan
EvilCarrot
Built the Revell 1/32 Droop Snoot as a kid and I have a gun nose in the stash. I agree with BiggTim, the kit hasn't got much in terms of detail. If you've built any of the other ancient 1/32 Revell kits you pretty much know what to expect. Despite that it still looks impressive when built. I plan to build mine in flight and stick her to the ceiling. BiggTim and Mark M
LSP_K2
Another option to consider, the Monogram Pro Modeler (Hasegawa) kit. BiggTim, Big Texan and Mark M
phasephantomphixer
Vote to Academy in 1/48. Built their J in Nat. Metal, added True Details wheels and cpit. Was pain free and very easy build which looks super. No scary alignment issues often heard of...
RBrown
I would really like to see a new tool 1/32 scale P-38 from Revell in 2018. BiggTim, Rick Griewski, LSP_K2 and 2 others

EvilCarrot
We can dream, right? I'd sell a kidney if "big T" did a P-38. I'm sure my neighbour can live with only one.
