Scale modelling photography can be dangerous

Just over two weeks ago I offered to take a picture of the new Revell Spitfire box for the site, square on shot with no flash is needed ... no problem I thought.

Put the kit on my workbench and pulled out a stool to stand on to point the camera down and square on ... and I fell and fell very hard, knew when I hit the floor this was not good, felt something give in my neck, pulled myself up slowly and was in instant agony, used those heat pads and hoped the pain would go away in a short time, next morning after little to no sleep it was just as bad, called the non emergency number we have in UK, explained to operator what happened and they sent out an ambulance, x rays were taken at local hospital and some other kind of scan, the decision was made to transfer me to the main big hospital in Aberdeen Scotland, they did an MRI scan (these give very detailed images) and I'd badly fractured a neck vertebrae ... pretty much broke it really!  was operated on next day and now have two titanium metal rods in there and 12 screws in there for life.

Got home late Wednesday night, very painful even with the pain killer medication still, but glad to be home ... could have been a lot worse though, my fingers and toes still work, good strength in my fingers, so no apparent damage to my spinal cord, walking too but that's painful just now, hope I heal as well as possible soon.

Was going to see Iron Maiden rock band on Tuesday, have had to call that off, much disappointment about that, but oh well ... staples come out Monday and should feel a bit more comfortable after that.

They say most accidents happen at home and I guess that's true, kicking myself for being so careless, had heart stent surgery in February too, hope that's the end of my run of health bad luck :) ... stay safe out there folks.

Damn, no picture of the Spit box :hmmm:

Seriously now,  Damn..... I am so glad you are OK, have had stents myself and they leave no marks, that is one serious operation there and I am so glad the results are so positive, you do realise you will never pass through an airport metal detector again without bleeping :)

Incidentally they use titanium because human bone will grow to it. They did a hip op on a women in the Falklands and they were missing a bolt, she now sports a F-4 Phantom item in her that they found fitted :)

I am just glad you are on the mend with no permanent damage  :D  :clap2:  :clap2:  :clap2:

OMG, simply horrendous news. Thank goodness after the surgery the road to recovery will be less painful and the prognosis; a full recovery. An excellent lesson for us all.

Just take care follow your doctors advice and don't push it.

YIKES is right!

Just thinking about that gives me the chills. No need to tell you how lucky you are, but I'm glad you're OK and still mobile.  I agree, most accidents happen at home. I think it must be because we're relaxed in our castle and feel safe.

My thoughts and prayers are with you for a speedy recovery.

Thanks Tony ... and everyone

Yeah, nasty fall I had, the worst part was, managed 2 pics, thought one more and I'll surely have something decent, leaned fwd and that is when I fell ... the camera went flying but is fine, the pictures were not good, so hope someone else can provide a box image of the kit for the site :)

Never knew that about titanium growing into the bone, amazing! LOL at the Phantom and yes I realise I'll be bleeping at metal detectors forever now :)

I asked the surgeon if it would be possible to film the surgery, it was, so signed a consent form ... I've seen the pictures and a video clip they took, was totally unconscious at time of course, far to gory to post here but its kinda therapeutic to know what the rods look like on my spine ... they are going to use the pictures and video as a future training aid for new surgeons and I'm kinda proud to help out in that way.

WOHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLY S#*T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dude........ glad to hear you are going to be OK...... but I guess there is a learning curve here, and that begs the question............. "Did you learn anything ? ".....  Excedrin Headache Number 372 !  AND , best of all, you now have an excuse, if you have a bad day or do something silly, you can now officially say one of your screws are loose ! Always a sliver lining !!

Seriously..... I am sorry to hear of this, but again, the silver lining, very, very glad you will be ok, and what a very cool thing with the video... good for you, that is really cool.....

take good care and hope you heal well.....

Jeff

This thread comes at an odd time. While getting out of the shower last night, I wiped out and did a world class lipstand on the floor. It's scary how quickly it happens.

Hi Alan. I should have fully explained in my first post ... I already had a spinal problem called Ankylosing Spondylitis, that's Latin for a spine fusing together rigidly, so already had reduced mobility and my head was not able to move at all (maybe a few degrees) this problem was diagnosed in 1992 but I knew something was up long before that ... so basically my spine is easily damaged and I really should have been more careful ... my limbs are good though and still are it seems and I'm mega grateful for that.

Since my head was immobile before the accident, I've really not lost anything that way after the accident, if this were to happen to someone with normal head movement it could be quite devastating I suppose ... but my AS crept up on me over the years and the loss of my spine mobility was very gradual and so was my dealing with that aspect ... I guess I can emotionally deal with this accident better because of that, that and also I'll be 58 this year and past my prime ... had a great active life in my prime and no complaints really ... a silver lining for sure on a very dark cloud and bad day in my life ... so grateful I'll be able to carry on once the pain goes away to almost as same as normal again.

Thanks.

Hoping for a fast recovery and less pain. Good luck. What a crazy story, but a warning for those of us who think we are younger than we are.

OUCH!

Glad to hear there wasn't nerve damage - I fractured two lumbar vertebrae years ago. The left side of my butt felt like it "fell asleep" for two years afterward.
