What's the advantage of the Garret TFE731 vs. the original engine? the garrets are getting pretty old in the tooth too no?

the 731 has a bit more thrust. The weight of the jet goes down significantly with the installation, so the thrust to weight curve improves. The Saphire starter is deleted; saving about 300 lbs. The specific fuel consumption is better. The throttle response is much better.

Any engine can be zero-timed…The 731 can be essentially a new install as a result. The TBO for the 731 is better. Parts are easy too. A DEEC is an option for the 731 that the original engine doesn’t have.

The original Ivechenko AI25TL engine is easy to find, but finding one with logs is getting harder. The hydro mechanical fuel control for the AI25TL is a dinosaur, and tricky to adjust and trim.

My only concern with the 731 is reliability- The AI25 is bullet proof. It rarely quits- I don’t have the data for the 731 lifetime failure rate..could be a non-issue though.
