1/32 Buccaneer S2B - Icelandic Fine Arts

It is a saw made by Platz for modellers. Alexander Glass from Uschi imported some in Germany but never succeeded in getting others. I could only get one with a 0.15  thick blade. I broke the very end of the saw (3-4mm) while cutting through the Buccaneer but considering the resin thickness this was not surprising. I'm currently trying to find a source to get other ones. I ordered one from Amazon to assess it (albeit with a thicker blade) and will try to contact Platz directly.

OK decal update,

Nigel has just sent me these images of the first upscaled sheet that will become available with more on the way!

I will pop these on as I am sent them.

The bad news? each set consisting of 3x A5 sheets will cost £34.99 rather than the £25 first advertised.

This first sheet is an upscale of this

216 Sqn is quite an esoteric choice, although it's squadron successor a 1/32 L-1011 Tristar would be mightily impressive.

I think I'll have to wait and see what other options will be on the other sheets as I think only one big Bucc choice is in my future.

Pretty sure it'll be FAA .... or RAF though.

Well, to me that price is more than acceptable for three customized A5 sheets. I was not convinced the initially announced cost was realistic if we look at the price of any mainstream 1/32 decal sheet! I think I paid the same price for the last combo of F-104 decals I purchased. So, kudos to Nigel!

may i make a suggestion re the decals?

concentrate on squadron markings, nose art and the like

I don't see much value in churning out roundels and codes as expensive decals when so many people can make their own these days, or easily get hold of them from others with silhouette cutters etc

that way you're going to get much more squadron coverage

all the best either way

I understand that approach ,

But as I said on this subject over on Britmodeller , I've been spending a lot of money buying generic markings  to use with specific squadron sets, and to be honest I'm delighted to have  the option to buy a comprehensive set covering all options , but I have to stress this is very personal opinion,

This is based on spending something like £40-50 in decal sheets that I had to be cannibalised in order  to produce one set of markings for my Camo'ed 1/32 Meteor F8 last year !

Indeed, the quickest and easiest way of producing these markings is to obviously upscale sheets already in production and with KW having the greatest variety of markings they were the first place to visit.

I know there is an amount of re jigging required in terms of sheet layout but to develop a brand new sheet would, I imagine, push up costs so dramatically as to be not worth the effort.

There are more sheets to come, but making a comparison of KW producing decals for the new HK 1/48 and sheets for a limited edition specialist kit, the money is obviously in the former.

On that basis, I don't want to push Nigel too hard for fear of him not wanting to bother at all. Softly softly catchy monkey!

Well despite the relative lack of comms , work on the Buc progresses, albeit rather slowly ,

Airbrakes – this seems to be perennial topic as regards the build, the good news is that the actual construction tasks have been completed ,  and I’m now in the process of adding back in the apparently billions of rivets that seem to be required, not to mention those lost on the brakes themselves thank to the endless sanding !

The close up pics of the brake area on a real Buc show something that wouldn’t look out of place on a Tractor!

My old Archer sheet has it seems started to suffer from my lack of care as regards storage , and so I’ve had to but a new sheet to complete the work. I also ordered a surface features set , with various raised panels/hatches, and this has been extremely useful in adding some visual interest t to the airframe.

The buc is a pretty clean airframe, but there are areas, especially round the bomb bay where it’s a little, shall we say rough , and these raised panels are going to be extremely useful!

Bombay , well while we’re on the subject ,I’ve scribed the panel lines which represent the opening gap between the bay doors and the fuselage , looking at walk rounds, man there’s a big gap there, so don’t be afraid to use a big scriber

Pylons .. AARGH.. huge frustration here, I now have professional type quality resin , but getting clean usable casings using my cheap silicon rubber moulds has been frustrating to say the least!.

So I now have Professional quality RTV rubber on its way, and I’ve been spending my spare time watching “How to Cast” videos on YouTube , something that in retrospect I really should have done to start with !

I’m hoping to have usable products by the end of next week, (I’ve got a week off next week so I can work on the Buc without interruption

One genuine achievement has been the creation of a cradle to hold the airframe while I’m working on it ,

And of course Pics to follow

My darling wife’s reaction , “Why didn’t you do that earlier”.. Gee thanks dear!

Before I forget - save our money re reference books - just go here - the detail shown in the pics is breathtaking...

Pylons missiles and more riveting news, First as you may have seen the Pylons are ready and have been shipped , but there are more available , if you're a Sky Pirate and want some pylons , I'm your man.. ok enough with the blatant self promotion,. What  progress on the Buc

Well how about she's armed..

ksqDSqI.jpg

First test fit of the pylons, Buccaneer specific Sea Eagle Launch rails,(also available!) and the Flightpath Sea Eagle, as someone who's spent too much time staring of pics of Lossiemouth based Bucs with this load out I can't tell you how happy I was that this actually looked right

The rails are based on the  Flightpath ones, but attached to Bass wood centre

Too bight , but you get the idea

See the Cradle, I did that..

Riveting.. ok the air brakes again..

I sprayed the whole area with Alclad White so I can see what I'm doing , these are Archer Rivets and lest anyone wonder about their size, this area of the buc looks like a steam engine.. seriously..

you can also see the stiffening plates added as part of the 1508 mod, in reality they're honeycomb mix , but they are THICK..

One final image  Underbelly , this features a small blade antenna , Radio Altimeter I guess , and numerous access panels, some of which I've reproduced using the Archer panel set

I'm still waiting for more from Archer before I can complete these airbrakes.. and the sooner the better !

That's all for now

So Colin, now you're locked down, how much further have you got? !!! Must be about finished by now?

Oh, and where do you get your Archers rivets, what size are they and roughly how many packs do you need?

Cheers
