1/18 Ferrari 333SP, Daytona 24hrs 1998

Recommended Posts

A collector asked me to build this car, using a Hotwheels 1/18 model.

The Hot Wheels model and some PE from Tremonia :

And some parts and decals from Legende Miniatures :

I got rid of the paint and used my Dremel to trim off the metal on the sides. Before :

After :

The original car has large air-inlets on both sides :

My Dremel made short work of the zamac :

I cut out a gap for the resin NACA duct :

WOW, thanks for all the likes :yahoo:

@ mark31 : Thanks mate, how are you ?

@ Joe66 : Thank you. You actually SAT in a 333SP ? Lucky man, I have never seen one in real live.

This project started on januari 14 2013, and it's still going on, so there's plenty more updates :

(The next couple of updates will show a watermark on the photos, after that it will be gone)

I took a look at the rims and tires, and decided to use the original Hot Wheels tires because they fit the rims better :

333SP%20MOMO%20001%200403%20(3).jpg

The tires look a lot better after some sanding :

333SP%20MOMO%20001%200403%20(2).jpg

I found a way to fix the rims to the suspension. First I cut off the brakes and sanded the plastic brake discs to the same diameter of the PE ones :

Three little pieces of tubing for the front rims :

13032013%20(4).jpg

13032013%20(3).jpg

The front rims are to wide :

13032013%20(8).jpg

The diameter is to small for the Hot Wheels tires :

13032013%20(9).jpg

I glued a pieces of tubing to the rear rims :

13032013%20(6).jpg

A dryfit :

Looks good, but I wasn't happy. In future updates you'll see just how much extra work I put into the rear suspension.

Update :

This is how Hotwheels made the cockpit :

The cockpit of the real car looks like this :

P020Web.jpg

The seat has some plastic rods on the sides :

333SPMOMO3003132.jpg

These were cut off, and will be replaced :

333SPMOMO3003134.jpg

With my Dremel (What else ?) I removed the left sidewall :

333SPMOMO3003133.jpg

With a couple of pieces of plasticard, I extended the cockpit bathtub :

Dryfit :

I made a new sidewall :

So that car is chassis # 19, Michelotto built.... nice ! Can't wait to see the finished model !!

The one I was in was a car from 1995 stable of Scandia Racing, a Dallara built car.... All of them are awesome in my book !

Hi Joe, yes it's chassis 019 that I'm building. Very cool video, the sound of that engine is great !

Update :

This is how Hot Wheels made the exhaust pipes :

24062013%20(1).jpg

The first 2, made from sprue :

24062013%20(3).jpg

Four more. Looks a bit better than the ones from Hotwheels, but there's a lot more room for improvement :

260262013M%20(1).jpg

This 333SP has no radiators, the inside of the sidepods will be visible. I removed the 4 metal tubes that hold the screws :

16072013%20(4).jpg

And modified the fueltank. Before :

16072013%20(12).jpg

After :

16072013%20(3).jpg

16072013%20(1).jpg

It took a lot of work (and patience) to build the rear suspension from brass tube and copper plate :

31082013%20(2).jpg

Fixed together with a soldering iron :

31082013%20(1).jpg

Dryfit with the wheels :

31082013%20(3).jpg

The construction is hold together by 2 brass tubes inside the gearbox. It will be glued after painting :

31082013%20(4).jpg

There still a lot of sanding work left on the headlight housings, and I have to find a way to make the headlight covers :

31082013%20(5).jpg

Sincerely

Pascal

The Ferrari 333 SP is the first Sports Prototype racing car since the 312 PB.....examine them together and you can see the direct link in purity of design..... here is a short vid of the 312 PB.....listen to the 12 cylinder music !
