Fairchild Cornell: Combat Models vacuform

Recommended Posts

As the title suggests, this is Combat Models PT-19, which I'll be building as a PT26A, a Fairchild Cornell.  This particular example served with the Rhodesian Air Training Group (RATG) and is another model to add to my collection of aircraft flown by my father, this time when a staff pilot with No. 24 BG&NS.

The vacuform looks pretty good to my inexperienced eye so I hope it goes together without too  much stress, though I'm not betting on it.  I'll be detailing the inside as much as possible: the drawings supplied with the kit are useful, I've downloaded a manual from Avialogs for extra detail but critically I've a friend who's a Cornell specialist who has sent me really good photos and drawings to help clarify the cockpit construction and internals.

The only major problem that I can see looming is the undercarriage - those supplied are simply horrible so I'm going to have to find some way of improving them and the wheels, already thinking about the options for that! :)

A little progress, the coaming has been removed separating the two cockpits on the PT19 and the internal ribbing fitted on both sides.  A dry fit shows that all lines up fairly well:

I copied the pictures of the PT26 instrument panels from the maintenance manual and scaled them so that they are 1/32nd scale to use as a guide when cutting plastic.  I'll also be using these drawings above for the floor of the two cockpits, more tomorrow I hope.

I've just read through Dad's diary again, he wrote the following for 10 March 1945:

"Another week passed.  Have done hardly any flying.  One day detail, some training and one night detail.  No future in the night detail, bags of low cloud and lightning, managed to do the trip but it was a bit shaky at times.  Went in the Cornell with Pete Taylor one day looking for game, saw three lots of ostriches and a few kudu with the first lot."

Little did he know that his best friend, Max Venton, was dead and cold in the ground for exactly a week by then.

So, a bit more work detailing the cockpit notably the floor and the IPs including the start of the coaming between the front and rear cockpits, though this will have the anti-roll age added shortly plus a little extra work to smarten it up.

The forward fuselage ribbing and framework will be completed next including the rudder pedals, then sundry items like map cases etc before I fit the seats.  I have some seatbelts on order from HGW.  I believe the floor may have been left natural wood so I may try woodgraining on it for fun!
