Derek B reacted to Anthony in NZ in Breaking an 8+ year hiatus
Welcome back to LSP! There are a couple of awesome builds going on here with Intruders and Prowlers to inspire you!
That 48th one looks amazing, looking forward to seeing your build in 32nd scale
Cheers Anthony

Derek B reacted to STM in Breaking an 8+ year hiatus
After over 8 years away from the bench I have finally gotten the itch to get back to work! Now I just have to find all of my modeling stuff again! I hope my compressor still works.
I ordered a Trumpeter 1/32 A-6E TRAM Intruder. With 1500+ hours sitting in one, I am sure there will be MANY things I find I have to fix. Even though I have not flown one since 1988, I bet I could still sit in one and pass the blindfold cockpit test. I am most likely going to sand the side and center consoles flat and just start from scratch, I may very well do the same with the instrument panel. My biggest handicap will be I am no longer living in Pensacola so I do not have unlimited access to the Intruder at NMNA. However I am an hour and a half from USS Yorktown berthed in Charleston SC and they do have one on the flight deck there. Somewhere I still have my NATOPS manual so I always have that too.
I am excited to get started, the last one I did was a total rebuild of the old 1/48 Revell kit

Thanks Anthony. I do believe that I have gotten better with the scratch building in the last few years. I am able to visualize solutions to construction problems and to employ, let us say, unique building skills.
Just wish I was better at painting.

Still think you are a modelling legend with what you do with plastic...awesome!

Nothing beats a US Navy aircraft - especially an Electronic Aggressor - no matter how dirty and hellenic the alternative may be!

Embrace change! Change usually leads to good things.
Enjoy life. Get outside more. Turn the Damn news off! Read more. Enjoy family. Now, if I could only find my damn compressor, I'd really be happy!
Learn new things. I'm enjoying cooking more which has been fun! I walk 4-6 miles a day. I love working on a 1976 Midget of my brother in law owns. We work on it in the evenings and it's been a blast. Most importantly however, if someone is interested in our hobby? ALWAY I mean ALWAYS, steer then into proper propeller things! Jets are for kids!

Derek B reacted to mozart in A word of advice!
We on LSP (and of course other modelling fora) are so lucky in that we have a hobby which we find absorbing and fulfilling, one which has many facets including research, building, painting, photography, social interaction/club meets, exhibitions etc etc. Right now across the world many people are finding themselves at a bit of a loss due to the effects of the Covid pandemic, some sadly redundant, some furloughed and many retiring early.......and there's that yawning chasm ahead asking "what do I do now to fill the void?"
So if you were chatting to such a person and they expressed an interest in our hobby, what would be your first, and perhaps, most important piece of advice to them in order to get them "on the road to fulfilment!"?

Yep, passion is A #1. Just find out what they are interested in, planes, cars, armor ect, and tailor an easier to build kit for them to start. Once a passion/high interest is kicked off, the rest usually falls in line

Derek B reacted to Scotsman in 3D printed 1/32 Access Ladders
I've just stumbled across this gentleman on Ebay , jscotterill, he produces 1 piece 3d printer access ladders in various scales,
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/jscotterill/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=
They seem to be available in all major scales, as you can see he does a set of Buccaneer ladders which he's in the process of scaling up for me and anyone else with the need to crew up a Buc!
Also in the pipeline are Brit Phantom and Hunter sets ,
He seems to be a really nice person and for people like me uninterested in 3D Brass origami ladders , it seems to be a good deal,
And apologues if this is something that's been covered before !

Here are the completed airbrakes. Actuating cylinders and hydraulic lines. Round cylinder held the drag chute, I will need to simulate this somehow.

Speedbrakes. These are the basic "Boards", actuation cylinders and the rest to come shortly.
Panel lines have been highlighted with a pencil. I have applied Model Master Semi-gloss to get to a more realistic sheen. I have also added a minimal number of stencils.
Falcons!
Nearing the finish line, Dan

Derek B reacted to Dave Williams in 1/24 DR1 Meng
Got mine today, and all I can say is WOW! It looks like they’ve taken care of the issues of the 1/32 kit by molding each wing in upper and lower halves with internal bracing on the parts to prevent warping. Also, the stacking lugs on the wing LE are now separate parts that you attach in the correct locations (inboard or outboard, depending on the airframe). The rib tape molding is more subtle and refined than on the smaller kit. Since the kit comes with rolled PE machine gun cooling jackets and seat belts of flexible strips and PE buckles, I’m not sure that it really needs any aftermarket. Definitely not just a simple scale up of the 1/32 parts. It will be interesting to see if they do any other 1/24 WW1 aircraft kit.
As a note, this kit is a production DR1 only, but it looks like the F1 may be released as a separate boxing. There are flashed over holes in the rear fuselage marked DR1 and F1, and a couple of parts like the upper forward fuselage and tailplane have a small DR1 molded on them.

Derek B reacted to Ryan in I know better
I have got to stop assembling too many parts to one assembly thinking I can paint them attached!
The excitement of completing an clean assembly is softened by the realization that I hath painted me self into a corner (again).
Thanks for listening.
