Jeff reacted to Wolf Buddee in Bitten by a Mosquito!
Welcome to LSP Jeff.
Jeff, thanks for the kind words! If I can suggest one thing, loose the hesitation and dive in to the Mosquito kit. Unless you give it some love it'll only ever be a box full of plastic bits. Not only that, it's an incredible kit that you'll thoroughly enjoy building. Make it your own and have fun with it.
I look forward to seeing you WIP posts here.
Cheers,
Wolf

Wonder what’s next - Indy, Daytona, The Iditarod, Boston Marathon, America’s Cup? Millions in yearly revenue tossed out the window by folks who don’t have a clue. Not sure they’ll find a replacement venue where yet another loud, sometimes messy motor sport will be welcome. Too bad.

THANK YOU !! For NOT folding the seat belts like an airliner as everyone else does, your way is SO much more realistic than the perfect folded belts like an airliner... I see neatly folded belts on 'operational" modeled aircraft, and think , by the time they unfold them to sit in the cockpit the enemy will have them.... thanks for your attention to that detail... looks great !

Well, somehow, I missed the opening of this show.....I have found a small place to sit WAY in the back of the theater....... I have my I promise to be quiet, and not yell out loud, I will stay seated in my spot ( try to not have many bathroom breaks) and when the maestro is on the stage , I will give my full attention........ I will not whisper to the guy beside me either.............. I will, how ever watch closely in awe, stare in amazement, shake my head in
astonishment, and marvel at the incredible, unbelievable, amazing, scratch building, and engineering talents that is gracing the stage of another gob smacking, superlative detailed, exceptional build.............. as always I will check in regularly as I did with the Spitfire for my daily dose of outstanding model construction techniques.................. thanks Peter, great to have you doing another build...... I enjoy every bit of what you do..

One thing I enjoy on my builds is taking a deep dive into my subject. Most of the time, I find a treasure trove of info online. This time, pictures of Vietnam War Cobras weren't as common as I had hoped. In the case of the Cobra, I found many good reference shots perusing FB forums focused on the Army aviation in the Vietnam War and multiple smaller websites dedicated to specific units, usually run and maintained by the vets themselves. Figured I share a few of the pictures in this thread. To the best of my knowledge, I don't recall having seen these before.
The "Thousand Yard Stare". Items to note - the pilot is wearing the late-war USAF style survival vest. Also note the multiple maps stuffed between the glareshield and canopy. Also note the aluminum colored housing for air-conditioning system behind the seat (more on this later).
"Hot" rearming. Note the guy in the OD green Jungle Fatigues (bottom only in this picture). As a cold war grunt, those fatigues were still authorized for wear until sometime in the very late 80's when they were replaced by the warm weather BDU's. I still think they were the best hot weather field uniform the Army ever came up with. Light, amazing cool and would dry out quickly when you inevitably got them soaked (from sweat or just being out in the rain). It was a sad day when I had to put mine away forever.
Near miss (I hope). The website provided no info on whether the gunner was hit or not. Looks like the side armor stopped some of the blast. Note the color of the seatbelts. These belts were found in multiple colors. New, they were a sort of metallic grey/white shade. As they weathered, they could end up browish or a green grey. I plan on going back and weathering my seatbelts a bit to tone done the uniform color on them.
Another shot of the gunner's cockpit. Note the repaired bullet holes. Again no info on whether the gunner was hit but if you look at the holes on both sides, if he wasn't he was truly the luckiest guy in Vietnam.
Thanks for following along on a post that has very little to do with modeling.

LOL, thank you for noticing! That's always been a pet peeve of mine, no idea why. The effect wasn't as good as I'd hoped, it's tough to get PE to completely look like fabric. In retrospect, a different medium would have been best for this build.

Jeff reacted to MikeC in Make the others jealous
I may or may not have mentioned that I am a volunteer at an aircraft collection not far from me. https://www.shuttleworth.org/explore/the-collection/
That may have made some jealous already, but there's more. As his book The Flight of the Mew Gull relates, in February 1939 Alex Henshaw flew his Percival Mew Gull racer G-AEXF from Britain to Cape Town and back, setting a record time which stood for many years. Now the Shuttleworth collection is unique in being the only place in the world where you can buy the book in the gift shop, then walk through the hangars and look at the real aircraft, which is preserved there, and still flies.
Having walked past this beautiful-looking aeroplane a few times, I just couldn't resist the modeller's instinct. I know I have said in the past "I don't do resin"; that is about to change, as the postman just delivered this.
Perhaps I could even be persuaded to do a WIP, but no promises.

Hey Carl
I actually grew up in Thornbury. 100 miles north west of TO, between Collingwood and Meaford, right on Georgian Bay. Great place to be a kid.
Spent 5 years in TO while in engineering at U of T. Moved out west when I joined the RCN.
Yes I remember those days. Really liked Kieth's Hobby Shop on Young.

Remember all the hobby shops that used to be here? If only more were still around.

Nice to see more Canadian shops are getting them in. My LHS Wheels and Wings got theirs in earlier this week, Great Hobbies has them up on their website and supposedly Sunwing Hobbies order is inbound.
For once, we're not getting left out.
