Well, I guess that the Halifax had to be good at something

Sorry Cees, it’s been such along time that just couldn’t resist

Oh, and please, nobody tell Cees that I’m currently building Revell’s 1/72 Mk.III, I’ll loose too much credibility

Lancasters weren’t any good at towing gliders, let alone a Hamilcar. For that you need a a Halifax II or V.

Morning chaps, still very much alive and kicking. I check LSP every day.
Very pleased that Tom will be working on the Stirling. He is the best modeller for the job.
Haven’t been active on LSP for a long time but that is due to the photobucket foul up.
These days I only post pics on LSM. In the meantime I have finished The Fgr2 conversion
and working on a FG1 at the moment, the Manchester is also being worked on again.
    And that FM Halifax, tjeesh

Tom, how about finishing the Stirling as BK716, I have been involved with that for a long time
and her story is very interesting.
    Cheers

From what I remember, the Meteor was part of Wingscale, the folks originally behind the HK B-25 kits. When that deal fell apart, the Meteor was far enough along that HK was able to finish and release it.

    Not unlike the Border/Wingnuts Lancaster.

Hahaha! Thanks Maru. For a second there I thought you said it looked quite EFFLUENT!

Thanks Kev, definitely starting to look a little more B-17 like now!

Well, I always said the windscreen would be the key to defining "the face" and "the face" would be the key to the success of this whole little () endeavour. This week I am very pleased to share with you what in my opinion is "the look."

All the panelling so far wouldn't be worth anything if it didn't look good around the cockpit, but that had to wait until the end due to the application sequence. This a very tricky area to find good photos for, but the gentleman that has made the entire cockpit section in 1:1 scale's facebook page provided some very useful hints at the construction.....

    Here's the pics:

The trim parts under the windscreen were pretty straightforward once I established the shapes. The cockpit roof however, was quite the challenge. It took me two goes; I started with quite an oversized piece to develop the crimping to "shrink" the corners where the direction changes happened. I was hoping that if I did that, I could work the kinks out and not have to cut or overlap the remaining panel too much (not sure if any of that made sense!!!)

The panel was definitely the biggest challenge I've faced so far, but there was no shortcuts as it was critical to achieve "the look."

    Still working, then onto sanding....

Quite amazing what a 320 grit sanding sponge will do!

Then lastly, here's the result....very happy!

I then had to do the remaining window frames and joining pieces....

Quite a few little details to add on to the exterior in the near future too, like the football antenna underneath and the pitot probes etc, but I probably need to take the leap of faith soon and stick the nose on for good so I limit the amount of dust (and spiders) that make their way into the nose area. Not entirely sure what the next update will look like, but I'm very happy with this one!

    Cheers,

Aside from the fact the GBs for this year are already scheduled, this seems to have a political slant to it in that it’s essentially taking a side in a ongoing conflict.  I’m assuming that a Russian aircraft GB would be roundly rejected, but if you really wanted to make it non political, how about a Russian-Ukraine GB?  I’m not in any way supporting Russia, I’m just against politics creeping into this board, and even if people claim it’s about solidarity or other high minded principles, it’s still political in the current context, and there will be comments taking one side or the other, as has already happened.  If people want to start their own WIPs, that’s great!  But as an officially sanctioned GB of this forum, I don’t think it’s the right way to go.

Time to throw some paint on the parts to see if the detailing looked OK. I used an aerosol can of Halfords acrylic grey paint as my base coat. Luckily for me, the colour hue of the paint is not too far away from the dark admiralty grey that I needed, but it was a little lighter, which suited me fine, so this will be my final cockpit colour (I have since given it a second coat in order to get to some areas that I first didn't cover completely).

Finally, the ejection seat. I attempted to do something about the very poor representation of the parachute, back pad and seat cushion (I did manage to reduce the size of the head pad below the upper ejection seat handle). However, it was so bad that I ripped out those areas of the seat and I will scratch build a new PSP, seat cushion, back pad, parachute and harness assembly.

A little progress, had to move the openings for the exhaust stacks and re-mark the cowling lines to the correct places, seems like most kits put these all in the wrong place...

Also had to put some formers into the upper front cowl to make the front of the upper cowl wider so that the exhaust stacks weren't hanging out past the cowl openings at the front end, another thing that alot of kits have an issue with.. Once these were in place I put epoxy putty around this area and re-shaped it, fortunately when covering with aluminum it doesn't need to be finished pefectly as the aluminum is not like painting..

Made an interior intake piece of aluminum , this makes up the oil cooler section, I then made up a faux radiator face from V notched styrene and then made a housing frome aluminum and wrapped it with aluminum duct tape to hold it together, it will be glued into the intake section of the model..

I started to cut back the leading edge "cuffs" on the wing roots to the "B" shape...

Put radio and battery into the turtle deck and installed the auxillery fuel tank, feed line and fuel guage..

Started to applly some aluminum to the fuselage, I bought some "Model Monkey" 1:18 scale exhausts with shrouds...

Thanks mate, I think so too

Ok so this week has been a busy one with not much time at the bench, but I have news at least.
Before that I shall post this pic (courtesy of Martin Fenner of BPAG-photographer unknown at this stage)

How I want her to look, maybe slightly grubbier as I have seen her before paint touch up's after this was taken

The nose wheel well is a very busy place on a Phantom and I just could not leave it as it was in the kit.  Here I am starting with some new structure and a few pipes, lots more to go yet

The rear bulkhead is different between FG.1 and FGR.2.  FG.1 is more like the F-4C/D and FGR.2 is more like F-4J.   Here is the F-4C Eduard etch piece glued in

I really need to keep going on this as the time has finally come!!!

    Next up

Firstly thanks to @Greg W  and Si on Britmodeller for the Black box cockpit set!  You sir are a legend, but it means I have no more excuses, as you can see....damn you

Hopefully between all 3 sets I can make a proper FG.1 cockpit with small mods.

Right-O back to the nosewheel, oh I have reset the angle (rearward rake on the FG.1 compared to all other Phantoms)on the kit leg but not sure I am convinced I'm happy with the kit one, I have an Aerocraft set on its way as it looks far more accurate than Tamiya and although designed for the Revell kit I think might look better on Tamiya if I can make it fit, thanks @Ali62

    Cheers guys
