TorbenD
Hi, I'm a huge admirer of the pioneering work of RJ Mitchell back in the 20s and 30s so the S5 has been on my wish list for some time and so just had to splash out on my first resin kit. I was umming and ahhing for all of 2 whole seconds before my card came out - as you'll see below, on first impressions, it's looking like it is worth every hard earned penny - I hope I can do Marsh Models kit justice. Quite a few people have asked for images of the kit content so I'd thought I might as well take the plunge and start a WIP with a view to starting this build before (hopefully) too long. I'm planning be building the S5 (no doubt for quite a while) alongside my Winkle Brown SH Airacobra build which is pottering along slowly (but surely) due to the many corrections and all the added detail I'm lavishing on it. I have to admit, having seen the quality of the detail (and trying not to underestimate the challenges along the way) I'm soooooooo looking forward to doing something more or less out of the box with the S5 ... and what a small, well packed box! The instructions etc. with a very welcome touch of a swatch of the main blue paint to match to I'll just let the pictures do the talking... More to follow... TorbenD
more pictures... My initial thought is to do the first S5 variant as I believe the latter two had flush riveting and the thought of sanding down those wonderful moulded on raised rivets is possibly criminal As ever, I've been scouring the net for images and references but any good pointers would be most, most welcome.. especially the cockpit. Thanks for looking, Torben Zero77, KiwiZac, Gazzas and 6 others

LSP_Kevin
Nice one, Torben! Not many parts, but still looks challenging. Kev TorbenD
KiwiZac
Fantastic. I'm settling in for this one. I know precious little about the S5 so this will be doubly entertaining. TorbenD

GunnarO
Hi Torben, Looking forward to see this one finished. It's difficult to find good references, especially from the cockpit. A very nice piece is the article from Flight magazine February 1928. Here's a PDF copy: https://www.jottacloud.com/p/gunnaro/a1508d4e1b444bd58b4eb09b4e920e59 I'll see if I can dig out some more, the S5 is one of my favorites Cheers TorbenD
TorbenD
Thanks Ian, Trak-Tor, Kev, Zac, John, Shaka and Gunnar for all your comments Kev, you're so right on both counts ;-) Gunnar, what a great article you've dug out, thanks ever-so for sharing, I'd genuinely be grateful for any extra ref you or others may have. Nothing to show yet - I've just spent a couple of evenings with an optivisor on, delicately teasing away some of the flash from the floats and main body. These are generally extremely fine/minimal (lovely casting, no air bubbles etc.) but tricky on the few occasions where they have to pass near the beautifully rendered rivets. The resin used is very nice to work on, taking delicate sanding and scraping well - crisp yet relatively soft (not brittle) compared to some I've worked with or cast myself previously. GunnarO
Some nice reference photos here: http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/photos/supermarine-s.5?excludenudity=false&mediatype=photography&phrase=supermarine%20s.5&sort=mostpopular#license Although a different search, many S.5 photos turn up. For a cockpit image, I guess the S.6 is quite similar: http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/photos/supermarine-s.6?excludenudity=false&mediatype=photography&phrase=supermarine%20s.6&sort=mostpopular#license A nice in flight shot: https://www.thisdayinaviation.com/tag/napier-lion-w-12/ Some videos: https://youtu.be/gZ3ZZgp8eyU https://youtu.be/dxBisq4P5a4 https://youtu.be/1e-aqGhJuoI I know that Cambridge University Library holds a few original engineering drawings of the S.5, but only some outlines and GA's. TorbenD
Thx ever-so Gunnar - another set of great refs. A couple of the youtube Pathé reports have some really useful close ups of various elements in amongst the action shots.. lovely stuff! Zero77, you're welcome - if I hadn't caught your heads up on the release of this kit in these forums I could well have missed out! Gazzas
This will be cool! I always wondered why I've never seen this machine represented in plastic. Gaz TorbenD
