HMH Publications Aircraft in Detail 023: Sukhoi Su-22 Fitter

I read the review but had trouble with the score of 10/10 when allied to the statement, "...a whopping 138 pages..." I wouldn't describe a magazine that way, if it had just 138 pages; much less a book. Reading between the hyperbole, it does look to be a worthwhile addition but I'd expect a great deal more detail (and page count) before getting too excited.

I don't think you can truly judge a book simply by the number of pages it carries. I have seen a number of books on particular aircraft types, running to 3 or 400 pages, which were just about useless to most modellers, since the photos were often reproduced too small, in black-and-white or the coverage was very "general" and non-focused in nature.

I have several Duke Hawkins books and would rate them amongst the best model-making references you can buy. The Mig-31 Duke book is easily worth three-or-four previously-published books on the subject. The F-4 book is definitely "airframe-porn" at the highest level.

It a case of "Never mind the thickness... Feel the quality!" If only certain other things in life were this way...

Cheers.

I couldn't agree more. The level of detail, appealing to the average modeler, is truly outstanding, and I personally know of no better reference out there for this machine.

When we start a new book project, one of the first things we do, is buy one or more kits from the aircraft we want to picture. By looking closely at the kit, I try to find out what areas need good reference photos (and of course, it's a good excuse to buy a kit if I don't have it in the stash -hah!)

Take the new book that we are releasing in 2 weeks on the F-104 Starfighter. I bought the 1/32 scale TF-104G from Italeri (I already started some years ago on the single seat one) and noticed that good references of the canopy and the area between the two cockpits would be helpful for modellers. So, when we started making the photos for the book, this was an area we wanted to photograph in detail. This meant however that we needed more pages than usual. Same thing with the engine; since there's a engine in the kit, we decided to add pages on the engine in case a modeller wants to detail it.

My point is: upon looking at the Su-22 Fitter, we thought it possible to do it in 140 pages. For the Starfighter, we needed 180 pages. I try to keep the number of pages reasonable, because at the current price of paper (which has doubled in less than a year) the price of the books risks to go up too. We could have made a Su-22 book of 200 pages, but it would only have made the price higher, we feel that our 140 page book covers the aircraft well - we try to be as complete as possible. And to have fun making the books.

Now, if Sabrejet has any suggestions for the books, I am most interested in hearing them. This can be on subjects or parts of the aircraft. I recently has a very nice e-mail from a gentleman in Mexico who requested to also show how the pilots and ground crew were dressed and what equipment they carry. That's something I hope to include in future books, when possible (and allowed). Someone else suggested to do a book on a certain small, single-engined jet from some time ago, well: we hope to release a book on it later this year.

We're just a very small team making these books and I love to hear from Sabrejet or any of you. If we can make the books better, why shouldn't we listen?

And LSP-K2: we're just as big a fan of you as you are of the Su-22 book!

Nic

PS - Together with the F-104 book, we're releasing a book on the A109 helicopter. Not a commercial choice, as you can imagine, but it really is a very cool looking compact helicopter, worth looking at in detail.

Yummy! Will definitely add the 104 title to my collection. I am very pleased with all I have purchased.

Cheers,  Rockie

Me too. I'll get mine from Casemate as soon as it's available (after I finish the current reviews anyway).
