My first all black aircraft model in over 40 years RFI

Recommended Posts

A long long time ago on a continent far, far away I built the old 1/48 Monogram Black Widow.   I remember even now what a mess it was once finished.  It made me decide never to do another all-black aircraft until I had enough knowledge to make it look more real.

So, here is my second attempt.  I tried to use some light-effect-theory to guide my processes.  Despite the fact that I used a jet black pin wash, many of the panel lines that show, show up lighter than the surrounding surfaces which are very much diluted black.  This was opposite of my intentions.  After reading many arguments over panel lines, it is my belief that sometimes they show...  and sometimes they don't.  I try to make this occur on each of my aircraft models.

The MG 15 barrel with ring sites and MG 17 Barrel tips are by Master Barrels.  The MG 151 barrel is copper tube and the aerials of the lower fuselage are scratch built.  The wingtip lights are by 5-second-fix and the landing light backing is Molotow chrome pen.  The escape hatch is scratch built from Aluminum sheet, brass rod, sprue, and styrene sheet.  Brake lines are copper wire, and finally the seatbelts are Tamiya tape.

This aircraft is more of a representative of the type than any actual machine.  Though a machine with these codes did fly intruder missions over the Eastern UK.  Some had white fuselage bands.  Some had white stripes under the wings.  And some had the Nachjagdverband shield under the canopy.  But others did not.  My main goal was to work with the black and not be distracted by white and other colors.  Speaking of the white markings...  these are actually 50/50 Tamiya IJA Gray and Tamiya White.  The markings were cut on my Silhouette Portrait.

I hope you like it!

Thanks for looking!

That's awesome! I'm going to build a black "carpetbagger" B-24D

so I look at a lot of black airplane models for techniques to paint mine!

Cheers...Ron

Thank you!  Good luck with your B-24!  Hopefully we'll get to see some RFI pics.

Nice,  I sure wish we had a kit of this in our scale too.

Thank you!  Seems to be a common thought.  Maybe a petition needs to go to ICM...  they've done them in 1/72 and 1/48.  I'm sure there are plenty of ppl who could churn out some great AM for them.

Terrific stuff Gazza. This is your 2nd ICM Dornier? They must be nice. I began one a while back and parts of it are here somewhere???

How do you feel about this job when compared to the past? I am looking on my phone screen and it looks pretty good mate.

Thank you Dale.  Comparing this Dornier to the Black Widow of the past is pretty difficult.  All I had was a bottle of Testors Flat black paint and one of those crummy Testors paint brushes and very little modelling knowledge.  I do remember total disappointment, though.

All of these years later I have life's lessons as well as recently acquired modelling knowledge of the last few years.  I'm very satisfied with this result and at this moment can't think of anyway to improve on the paint.

Cheers,

Gaz

Wow!! I've often considered getting an ICM kit and after seeing this one here I may just tip over the edge and do it. Looks GREAT Gazz.

Thank you, Joe!  The latest generation of ICM kits are nice builds.  You really can't go wrong with them.
