This kit is an amazing piece of work by Special Hobby!
    An incredible level of detail.

Special Hobby have produced a kit that has taken quite a leap forward than their earlier releases.
It still has some issues getting a perfect fit in places, but it is generally a good fit.
This is an out of the box build, all I added was a set of seat belts from Eduard, otherwise there is plenty of detail in the cockpit just OOB.

    Painted with Mr Color acrylics.
    A fun build.

    Kit - Revell
    Paint - All Tamiya acrylics.
    Decals - Kit & HAD
Extras - Yahu pre-painted IP, Eduard pre-painted harness. Various wiring, junction boxes etc from scratch.

Been a couple of years since my last 1:32 build (a Trumpeter 109E), no particular reason just other shiny things grabbed my attention.

Not going in to any detail at all about the history of this particular machine, it's very well documented, as for the build, well it's a 'curates egg' of a kit - good points: well the undercarriage bays and gear detail are superb enough to keep most folks happy, but I added all sorts of wiring and junction boxes up inside which may never be seen but I know they're there. The cockpit is very good and didn't really need the Yahu IP that I added, purely because sausage fingers and middle-aged eyesight mean I can't get that sharpness that I once did by hand-painting. I expected the fit of the engine nacelles to be utterly horrid but I'm pleased to report that on my kit at least they were pretty close to perfect.

KIt decals were put to one side except for all the stencils which worked fine for me. I'm not a fan of RoG Instructions but these were OK with only the one blunder which most builders will have heard about so not going to repeat it here.

Bad points:- It may have been just my kit but I spent a shed-load of time, effort and putty blending the various nose sections together, the fit was very '1980's' if you get what I mean, most of the reviews out there don't mention this, but then most are of the earlier two-seater kit so maybe there's a difference in QC. The underside join between the front of the lower wing and forward fuselage still isn't right to my eye, but I was running out of patience at that point - so I admit to getting it to 'that'll do' as opposed to 'yeah that's spot-on'.

Paint is all Tamiya acrylics mixed using the Mk.I eyeball method, aircraft specific decals are HAD, first time using this company and the quality, opacity and adhesion is simply astonishing.

So that's it, there's a few 'user errors' in the build including having to scratch-build a new slat as the carpet monster got a hold of one, also I thinned the undercarriage pegs a little too much so it's prone to wobbling on it's legs, but I really like it, and it has a shed-load of presence sitting in my cabinet. Please feel free to ask any questions, make any comments or criticism.

    All the best from NZ.

    hmmm . Small Update

So now the proud owner of two kits . .....Brand new Tempest ....£32 off Jadlam after some haggling ......and 1873 Revell Typhoon ....£40 of Fleabay .....go figure where that extra £8 went ?

Sizing the two up does not look insurmountable .

On another note, being distracted by my 1:1 model project ....and no it's not a flippin' Blackburn @RLWP

So two kits , one goal and childhood interest in the local old airfield . What could possibly go wrong ?

The kit bashing of the two doesn't worry me per se...........the raised 1973 lines  and re scribing .......will be a challenge . I need to buy a scribing tool as you don't often do that weird scraping malarkey on muddy things. Ho hum .

If I get the F-80 finished soon enough, maybe the Hun will be a 2nd entry for the group build. That's the one I really wanted to build.

Throwing my hat in the ring with this one.  This will be an OOB build.  A PE instrument panel and bomb fins that looks like they were made by Eduard  are included, along with some nice resin details including wheels, ejection seat and  a couple of bombs. The decal set is nice, and give you options for 4 different aircraft.

It's starting to look like an F-80 now.  Last night, I re-scribed some of the panel lines that got lost in sanding of the seams. Most of them turned out good, but a couple will need to be filled and re-re-done. Then I'll try fixing some of the rivet details... That oughta be interesting.

Doh! is right. That fine print wasn't there last year when I requested a new cowl sprue for a SH P-36 kit that arrived from Model Hobbies with a crushed box and broken parts.

    My bad.

I'm sure they'll be on top of your email pronto, though.

    Getting the wings fitted today

I had to do some grinding on the main wheel wells and the intake tunnels where they were making contact and not letting the wing seat to the fuselage properly.

The front wing/fuselage joint will need a fair amount of filling and sanding.

The rear joint isn't bad, but the raised fillet panel lines don't line up. I suck at scribing and re-riveting, but I'll give it my best shot. At least it on the bottom of the plane, and not on top for all to see.

The wing roots don't look bad. In fact they look pretty decent. They will probably only need some Mr. Surfacer 1000 applied with a brush to fill what little gap there is.

I closed up the fuselage today. The seams along the top of the fuselage look decent, and won't need much filling and sanding along with the outer intake/fuselage joint, but the seam at the lower aft fuselage will need a bit of work.

The cockpit looks a little better after some touch-up, a dark/grime colored wash, and a coat of matt clear. A lot of it gets hidden by the small cockpit opening in the fuselage. I'm not sure why the matt clear ended up more like semi-gloss ?
