vince14 got a reaction from KiwiZac in Gothaforce Albatros D.V and Gotha G.IV
It's a bizarre sales strategy, everything they're planning on releasing is already available in 1/32. The Meng Dr.I is for sale everywhere, the WNW D.VII and D.V can be picked up for reasonable prices, even on eBay (and for much less than the Gothaforce kits), and surely by now anyone who wanted a 1/32 Gotha G.IV has got one of the WNW kits in the stash.
It's especially head-scratching when there are a number of WWI types - Breguet XIV, DH.4, AW FK.8, late Nieuports, Albatros D.II and D.III, SPAD VII etc. etc. - that have never been kitted in 1/32, or are only represented by the old Roden kits.
I can't understand the logic. Can anyone explain it? Especially if... you do not use... lots of dots... when doing so...

Their last update said they were hoping to start shipping the kits in late January or early February, but of course there still might be delays.

The four stages of owning an Aires product:
1) After buying the product, marvel at the crisp detail that will enhance your model
2) Test fit
3) Sand, sand, and sand some more to try and get it to fit
4) Chuck it in the bin

I get your point of view, but with my business head on instead of my modeller's one I just can't see how they have a viable long-term strategy. I wish them well, and in 10 or 15 years - when 3D printed kits are the norm - we'll look back at the trailblazers like Gothaforce and see them as visionaries. But at the same time we might also be saying 'I wonder what happened to them?'
And, of course, before that time comes the real argument will be whether 3D printed kits are genuine models, or just a glorified version of the old 'Snap Together' kits... 😈

I disagree. Whilst these are popular subjects, albeit in a niche market, when there is already an existing and commonly available alternative then people will always go with the less expensive option. It's like EVs - they use wonderful innovative technology and in many respects are superior to ICE cars, but sales have stalled (and in many countries declined) because they're far too expensive in comparison. I think that Gothaforce are trying to sell brand new electric Ferraris into a market where cheap, low mileage ICE Ferraris are easy to obtain.
If MENG hadn't got the Dr.I molds then I'd agree with releasing it, the market was crying out for years for one. But now...well I've got six of them in my stash, and I don't need another that is likely to be two or three times the price, no matter how cool the technology used to make it is. In fact, the only Gothaforce planned release I would think about getting is the SSW D.III as a replacement for the Roden kit - but even then, Aviattic are planning to release a new range of decals and accessories for it which will probably still be cheaper than the Gothaforce version.
I honestly can't see a Gothaforce 3D printed Gotha G.IV selling more units that the WNW Gotha G.I, which everyone says is the lame duck which sank the company. The market for 1/32 large bombers is extremely limited, especially when a cheaper alternative is available and Lukgraph are about to drop a 1/32 Caproni Ca.3.
Kotare had the right idea - start with a genuine moneymaker that people have been asking for. Instead of launching into the very limited WWI market with subjects that most modellers in the genre will already own, why not produce a 1/32 3D P-51, Bf 109, or Fw 190?
