Thanks Tim! Go for it with painting up your figure. I look forward to seeing it.My advice is don't be afraid to wow all the paint off and start over - this guy has had the faces before I was happy with it!

Thanks for the tut in figure painting. He looks great. I have a lovely resin pilot for a 1/32 Spit build. Last time I did a figure I was about 8 . He got blobs of humbrol flesh for a face and that was about it.

To me a little bit more than half a millimiter in 1/32 stays far more simple... ;-)

After a few squre miles of masking tape, finally got the splinter camouflage done.
Used Hataka red line paints for the RLM colours. Must say I really struggled with them. Getting better slowly but these paints have a serious learning curve. Reverted to highly thinned tamiyas for some shadeing and random streaking. Left it looking a bit  exaggerated as the gloss coats to follow qill knock it back a bit.   Camera flash  is exagerrating it but also Hataka's RLM 70 (Black green) seems a lighter shade to the RLM 71 (Dark green). Anyway , subsequent weathering will done it all down a bit . I hope

Started  work on the upper camo. Started with old fashioned preshading. Then mottled with mixtures of green and yellow

Then  the fun began. Put on the  RLM 70.  Really fighting with this paint. This is from the new Hataka red line range. Out of the bottle its just too thick for my liking as I'm trying to lay down thin translucent layers to allow some tonal variation to show through. Also endless fights with tip of the nozzle drying. So I tried thinning with hataka's own thinner and even at low pressure I get spider webs and paint runs. Eventually got this:

Some tonal variation is showing through but not as much as I would have liked. Will probably end up doing a bit of post shading and fading. Have now run out of masking tape - this is a big canvas!

Just spent the weekend fighting with their red line early luftwaffe set. I found IPA seemed to work better than their in house thinners. Also got endless tip clog when using my renegade Krome brush. Ended up reverting to my old Badger patriot which has a much larger nozzle. Also, when heavily thinned, like when trying to do mottles, I got spiderwebs and paint runs no matter how low I turned down the pressure. On the plus they seem to dry to a hard coat with a smooth satin sheen.

Heres the end result of a weekend of work on a Heinkel.

Making progress! After dressing the bomb pay in the Profimodeller PE, I sprayed it in interior green and then glued the bomb bay in place. Finished the cockpit and glued it in place and finally installed the top turret. I used the eduard mask for masking the turret, sprayed interior green first and then olive drab. I will have to remask the turret once I am ready to paint the fuselage. I still need to do the side gunner positions and the crawl space to the bombardier position before I can close the fuselage.

    Cheers,

After endless hours of masking, finally got her primed.
    Painting process on the underside.
Started with a heavy handed pre-shading with tamya neutral grey

Looks pretty grim. Then took highly thinned neutral grey and mottled ignoring the panel lines. Did the same with diluted white, lightening some panels more than others.

    Got it to lhis

    Close upon the port wing

Then multiple coats of xf 23 with a tad of white, highly thinned

I've left it a bit stark in case varnish coats knock it back. Although one more thin coat of xf 23 might be in order, especially on the flaps

One of the REXX exhaust, mid-prep. Each one had a large discoloration on top which is part of the process used to make these hollow metal beauties, but it made them look too uneven to my eyes. To tone that down, I lightly sprayed each with alclad exhaust manifold (directly onto the part without a primer). Looks much better and I'll add a bit of additional paint or powders to it to finish the look.

With an exhaust assembly so large, I'd say it's reasonable to take a few visible dents, so a-denting I went. This was simply tapping repeatedly with the heavy back end of a 2mm hobby chisel. Loving this look!

RIght, back to the model. Have the weekend off so hoping to spend some quality time at the bench.
1st up some resin exhaust shrouds arrived in the post yesterday- after being stuck in South African customs for 2 months! They were worth the wait though. Base coated tamiya dark iron then weathered with humbrol rust, iron oxide and smoke pigments. Finished with a black wash.
