Rob Colvin
I have seen a few pics of mustangs on Iwo Jima carrying 5 inch rockets. Were the rocket stubs limited by squadron/aircraft? Were the stubs mounted and removed?I was wondering if say the Enchantress or Shawnee Princess ever carried rockets? Thanks BiggTim
dodgem37
I don't know, but I doubt that from a maintenance standpoint they were continually removing and reinstalling the stubs on an as needed basis. Just my take. Best of luck finding the answer. Sincerely, Mark BiggTim and LSP_K2

CANicoll
Useless speculation on my part, but since the battle for Iwo Jima was so fierce and the need to attack an entrenched enemy required new methods I'm thinking it is highly likely that something like rockets were tried on some 'Stangs just for Iwo Jima. You know, the flyboys didn't want the Marines getting all the glory. ;-) Chris
LSP_K2
How did P-51s with rockets help in the Battle for Iwo Jima? Where did they fly out of? I'm not aware of any carrier based P-51 units If I'm not mistaken, the airfield was taken, before the island was declared secured. Jack

ringleheim
Iwo Jima as viewed from Mt. Suribachi. You get goose bumps looking at that tiny little place and trying to imagine the Hell those guys went through on both sides.
CANicoll
2,400 EMERGENCY B-29 landings? That is a lot of emergencies! VERY cool read, thanks for sharing! Here we go: Of those 1 8 missions, only six were escorts. The others were strike sorties which largely involved shooting up enemy airfields, sometimes with five-inch High Velocity Aerial Rockets. Six HVARs added over 700 pounds to takeoff weight — something not appreciated by the pilots, but they packed a tremendous punch, particularly against shipping and reinforced buildings.
