Definitely NOT you, old chum.
I forgot who it was. I can check it out but I don’t think it does matter much.

Great detailing, Max!
I remember someone on this forum mocked me when I drilled the drain holes on my Fly Hurricane some years ago. Ah well, those were the days…

quang got a reaction from Pup7309 in When no one’s watching…mmm plastic
I also used to… until after several years of moulding and casting, I grew an allergy to polyurethane resin, silicon rubber AND epoxy putty (milliput).
It’s NOT much the odor because they invented an odorless variety but rather the vapour resulting from the chemical reactions. You don’t notice it until you FEEL in it your lungs and your eyes!
Also when you use a saw on a resin part, beware of the dust like hell. Always wear a mask when you do it.

I guess I like medium hard/soft plastic because I like it on my latest builds: Border, MiniArt, Airfix, ICM,…
More than the type of styrene, I appreciate the way parts are nowadays attached to the sprues. I never accidentally lost any part, even the tiniest, from the new-generation kits.
Having said that, the new (expensive) ‘miracle’ sprue nippers are a well-worth addition and IMO a must.

OUCH! It reminds me of the time I saw a fellow student trying to stop a circular saw with her bare hand. Hopefully I stopped her in time.

quang got a reaction from Rocat in Building the Border 1/35 Kate. Got paint!
A quick update on the upper surface finish.
The peeling effect was sensibly fine-tuned by adding the green paint here and there to reduce the blotched effect and at the same time trying to keep some sense of credibility.
I took care NOT to degrade the hinomaru as I guess there’s a certain mystique surrounding it. You see paint peeling everywhere on Japanese planes except on the hinomarus which were kept pristine.
The engine cowling is permanently installed. White painted torpedo guides added.l
I wrongly added the homing loop antenna which shouldn’t be there as AI-316 and most Kates during the Pearl Harbor and Ceylon raids flew with their radios and mast antenna removed.
Border gave some attention to the gunsight for torpedo launching. It was present on every Kate even on bombing missions.
Glasshouse dry-fitted.
The rectangular window on both sides of the fuselage gave some natural light to the observer’s station.
Tank filler caps painted red. I added the protruding device in front of outboard filler cap which indicates that the landing gear is down and locked.
Serial and plane data
Oil, fuel and ordnance data table on the cowling.
Next time we’ll deal with the undersides.
Until then, thank you all for looking,
Cheers,
Quang

Not at first sight. Though they might come later with some extra cost.
So glad I’m NOT a 1/32 fundamentalist

quang got a reaction from coogrfan in JUG-OR-NOT? Building the MiniArt P-47D
It’s waiting for final assembly but next door Kate lured me away. I’d go back to the jug when I can get those hinomarus off my torpedo sight.
Sorry and thank you for your concern.

NEW YEAR SPECIAL! Dames, stars and stripes…
I added some accents to the nose art and reworked the script in the correct yellow (white on the decal).
Cartograf decals are exceptional. No apparent silvering.
The invasion stripes needed some serious positioning to match the period photos.
Some won’t like the extensive riveting but to me, it’s unobtrusive and accurate. It also add greatly to the NMF especially under a coat of paint.

I do have photo etched masks but didn’t use them this time because their effects would be too subtle for such an extreme treatment.
I didn’t even used the usual chipping liquids
Instead I used the humble Gunze maskol equivalent. Hinomaru, markings and walkways masked and maskol applied.
Green camouflage applied in random scribbling.
I knew that AK paints sought advice from Nick Millman, the expert on WWII Japanese camouflage for their IJN set. So I acquired a bottle of Nakajima green black to see what it looked like.
I made my own blend using the following 3 greens + one dark Thunderbirds blue for extreme shadows.
The greens are applied in random scribbles
Maskol removed
How Kate would look like in final. Note overspray on the unpainted outer wings.
The next step is adjusting the peeling by adding green here and there and refining the details. After that, post shading and washes.
It’s still a long way to Tipperary
Until next time,
Cheers,
Quang
