You’ve nailed the faded look of the olive paint very nicely John. Congrats on a fine build.

Another thread revival, this one to show the stand in use under a Tamiya Spitfire XVI, hopefully this will give a better idea of the size.

    Sammelmitteilung Nr. 3 (Dec, 1944):

    Translation:

Use of obsolete shades of camouflage paint for metal aircraft: Ref. 70 K 10.11

The raw material situation prohibits the destruction of high-quality paints with obsolete camouflage shades. It is therefore specified that stocks of

    a) Flw. 7109 and 7122 in shades 70, 71 and 74 are to be used up as interior paints for the cockpit instead of shade 66.

    Great....

It once was, is the cockpit 02 or 66, which problematic enough. Now, is it 02,66,70,71 or 74?

    Very interesting, thanks Damian!

Makes me think about all the conjecturing over the years about "late war RLM 66" and how green it looked, turns out maybe it was 70 or 71 all along??

Things were pretty messed up in Dec '44. I doubt that these types or reg revisions were actually put into practice.
They were painting bombers 70/71 thru the war so that doesn't make sense. 74 was used sporatically so it's possible
as an interior color as it's not that far from 66. Anyway , the more options for us the merrier .

It is true some non classical hues were seen on very late planes such as the He162. However, I'm agreeing with Mike about the fact this was more the exception than the rule and I seriously doubt this noticeably impacted the established production lines of the most important Luftwaffe types. However, this possibly occured on some subcontracted components as the production was noticeably reorganized by the Speer guys and delivering paint to the dozens of subcontractors was surely not easy close to the end of the war in Germany.

For that matter, I’m convinced that some of those ad hoc schemes with “late war” greens were nothing but usage of old stocks of RLM 70/71.

I fully concur with your assessment, amigo. The more primary sources are unearthed the more we realize how widespread the use of RLM 70/71 was right up to the very end, making a lot of the pontificating about "late war" greens over the last few decades seem pretty silly in hindsight.

As dad likes to tell me when I complain about cockpit colours; when he was working on a Firefly project years ago, one cockpit was blue, and one was green. Neither was the shade that the experts said it should have been.

When trying to choose between two potential purchases, the late MrsC's solution was usually, "Hang it, have them both!"; in this, she was a bad influence on my model buying habits, and that influence hasn't gone away yet ...

This happens when the paint forms a continuous film that goes from the model, up the edge of the tape and onto the top of the tape. Best way to avoid this is 1. use mist coats and 2. remove the tape as soon as possible.
