Daywalker
I am working on a P-38, and would like to try to replicate the patchy look on the OD where the sealing tape was applied for shipping them overseas. I have seen photos showing this effect, but I am not sure how much of the airframe was taped up like this. In the photo below, you can see where the tape was applied over the nose panels: My question is, was there was a standard way of doing it, or did it vary depending on who was taping the airframe? I have searched for a photo showing a fully taped aircraft or a diagram showing how much of the airplane was covered this way. If anyone can help, I would sure appreciate any help here! TIA! LSP_K2
I've mostly seen it on the gun bay, and usually in very similar fashion, one to another. I suspect the engines may have also been so treated, but really am not sure. Daywalker and BiggTim
dmthamade
It's somewhere in here. Maybe ask Chris where he got his ref pics. https://chriswauchop.com/2019/09/18/tamiya-1-48-p-38g-lightning/ Don BiggTim, MikeMaben and Daywalker 2

skiner
With my P-38 I used masking tape on light OD.... and if you want to see more...https://www.largescaleplanes.com/articles/article.php?aid=1997 Daywalker, Uncarina and Martinnfb
LSP_K2
Those are really some excellent photos, Tag. I'd already forgotten to look through my own Lightning references. J is right though, it seems to be not so much that the areas under the tape are lighter, but that the areas adjacent to the tape are darker. LSP_Ray
My suggestion on making the removed tape effect would be to use the Tamiya flex tape of the appropriate width then using Tamiya clear smoke brushed over it. Then cross your fingers when you pull the tape up you don't peel off any paint! Daywalker
