    Hi Adam,

I talked to Andrey at Halberd Models and he said they have plans to make the Helldiver floatplane conversion in 1/48 later on and possibly in 1/32 too. The real challenge for them right now is that Russians are attacking Ukraine currently he said they're 45 Km from his home and he may have to evacuate from his current location, so keep your hopes up they'll get to make it.

    Cheers,

    Hi Adam,

Thanks for all the great info! I didn't even think about asking Andrey with Halberd Models. I did ask Infinity themselves but I never thought of asking Halberd. I have purchased a bunch of Andrey's stuff and it is very high quality. I have to say the P-38 floatplane conversion was one I had wished for for years but I figured it would never come to fruit then amazingly enough it did.

I may look for Kingfisher parts too like you suggest using.

    Hello everyone,

I'm interested in making a float equipped Infinity Helldiver. I'm just not sure which Edo floats the Helldiver actually used as an experimental floatplane. What kit(s) are out there that may be able to sacrifice the floats to make a Helldiver floatplane? I've been thinking maybe a Beaver or an Otter in 1/32 maybe the trick, if they're even available may be the real question. I'm open to all comments and input.

    Thanks,
    Brady

    Hi Iain,

Nice work so far! If you need detailed pictures of an Invader let me know. I have access to an A-26B Invader. I know it's not a K model but it will have the wing profiles and skin panels you need. The Invader I have access to and help maintain to airworthiness never has been modified at the spar to be what they called an "Executive transport" either. For if you've never heard of this that was a modification that required making the bomb bay a seating area for generals and high ranking executives for fast transportation. While making this modification they cut the spar and made it more box-like in the bomb bay area for head room of the executives. Ours has just an original bomb bay and spar.

I look forward to seeing more work on this kit by you. I currently don't have this kit but have considered it since we have a real Invader. I've just not spent the money for it yet.

    Cheers,
    Brady

MustangManiac reacted to patricksparks in 1/24 Airfix P-51 Cavalier Turbo Mustang Conversion
Felt like working on something different, have been seeing the 1/32 conversion sets being built up but decided to do the the old Airfix kit.

I searched the web and found some drawings to work from and scaled them to size. I was originally going to build the Piper Turbo Enforcer but when I started researching it I found that there was much more to modify on the airframe than what Cavalier Aviation had done on their single prototype.
Started with cutting off the radiator section from the bottom of the fuselage, made a simple wooden pattern and vacuum formed a bottom cap.

Next I needed to extend the top of the vertical tail, I had an old 1/32 Revell P-51B kit and was able to remove the top of it's vertical tail and use it to increase the height, I had to add a shim in between the 1/32 tail parts to increase the thickness to match the Airfix tail.

I  moved on to the wing tip fuel tanks and was able to us the Airfix kit tanks, cut them in half at their widest point and had an HK models "COOKIE" bomb from their Lancaster kit which is the same diameter as the Airfix P-51 drop tanks, so some more cutting and a generous dose of glue and sanding , some brass tube in the rear of each tank for fuel dumps.

I cut the flaps off the wings so that I can have them in the lowered position, I cut some tapered styrene strips an added them inside the wings where the flaps had been in order to keep the wing halves from collapsing.

I also have purchased the "Modelmonkey" 3D printed landing gear wells , really nice part, saves a ton of scratch building.

I made some high density urethane foam patterns for the engine nacelle, I had to make the patterns in two sections due to not having a large enough vacuum form machine to do the full length, in the photos you can see the verticl seam through the nacelle, it hasn't been glued yet waiting to make sure it's time...

The prop spinner was a piece of a drop tank from the spare parts box as well as the exhaust port. I have to make a new propeller as the cord of the blades and shape are not correct, if I had made the "Piper" Turbo Enforcer it would have been perfect as those aircraft used clipped Skyraider props. The other problem that I didn't relize at first is that the Cavalier Mustang with the Rolls Royce "Dart" engine had a Rotol propeller which spun counter clockwise, so much for scrounging a prop to modify....

I moved on to the canopy issues, the Airfix canopy is pretty poor, the windscreen is way off, too low, angled too shallow, the bubble is too low as well. I had to change it anyway, The Cavalier Mustang had a very "blown" canopy which bulged quite a bit aft of the windscreen , also the canopy on the Cavalier prototype had a higher rear end on the bubble to facilitate a passenger's head in the rear seat that was installed, it wasn't a TF-51 canopy. Anyway I made up a high density urethane foam pattern for the canopy as well, I'm pretty happy with the result so far.

Here are some overall photos of the project so far.

Thank you very much Albert! I can settle for a 10 yard instead of a 50 yard roll as long as I don't have to buy it sheet by sheet. I figure I'm going to screw up a few times so I netter have plenty material. I've got a roll on order.

    Hi everyone,

I'm back with some progress on the C-47 on floats. I have fared over actually all three wheel wells now but I forgot to take a picture with the tail wheel done. I've also been filling in the seams between the two halves of the fuselage with your standard green putty. Here's what she looks like now other than the progress of the tail wheel being fared over too.

If you're interested in how I faired over the wheel wells, I cut the side out of a section of plastic tubing and started shaping and cutting until I was satisfied with the look. I will still fill in some gaps with glue or putty or maybe both around my fairings to make the complete.

    That's all for now.

    Cheers,
    Brady
