Going to D-Day 70th - in a 70 year old Piper L-4 Grasshopper!

If weather holds - my buddy Allan and I are off to the UK leg of the D-Day remembrance events at Lee-on-Solent tomorrow in Allan's '44, ex USAAF Piper Cub to join a fleet of C-47s and some other interesting machinery and people.

Over-nighting there - then due south on Wednesday - across the Channel to Cherbourg.

Weather looking varied at present - so we'll see how far we get - but hopefully spend rest of the week in and around Normandy.

The aircraft served in France after D-Day and subsequently was taken on charge by the post war French Air Force - before going on the civil register in the 1950's.

Will take lots of photo's and post any particularly interesting ones here.

Bit of a special trip - for the aeroplane as well as us - wish us luck!!

We made it to Lee-on-Solent yesterday afternoon and have been surrounded by C-47s, paratroops et. al. - amazing experience.

This afternoon rest of the aircraft departed and arrived safely Cherbourg - but no para drop due to high winds. Allan and I over-nighting at Lee-on-Solent again - too windy for the Piper L4 - may try for tomorrow am.

Taster images below - am putting together an album over on Facebook for anyone that's interested.

Still at Lee-on-Solent - scrubbed going Cherbourg direct - going along coast to Lydd in Kent to refuel and evaluate.

If good we'll cross Channel shortest distance to France.

People here have been fantastic - would you believe that 190 local families (in small community) have provided accommodation for air crews and paras for this event - can't thank them enough...

That female French para was quite intense!

And lots of inspiration for D-Day modelling projects gained. :)

We've aborted due to high winds and returned to base @ RAF Halton.

Better to be back on the ground at RAF Halton wishing we were with the rest of the aircraft/crews in Cherbourg - than in the middle of 75 miles of open sea in a 70 year old aeroplane with a 65hp engine (when it was new), in 20+ knot winds wishing we were on the ground.

Some brilliant memories and a huge number of photos - I'll post some more - just need a beer and food now  :)
